I actually like the first three tracks of these album, but I’m a bit of a Mike Love apologist in the first place. I think the contrast in the lyrics of the verses in the title track is kinda the point. He’s going through the high’s and low’s of the good ol days. That being said, once you get past track three, I can’t even say anything positive about them.

Mike Love does *not* get the credit he justly deserves. See my essay about his solo output on the beachchords blog but to respond to Giggens here... I give you credit for trying to hear it with open ears and open expansion. Mike Love makes it look easy and it's deceptive but there's a pop structure to his writing and producing vision. The narrative put out by the press is pro Brian because there's an agenda there to tell a good dramatic story which is their REAL intention. Without Mike Love, there's no Beach Boys plain and simple. Would Brian and the Wilson Brothers have still been musical? Undoubtedly.. but it was Mike Love's confidence, vision, and ambition that carried them to the next level. His latest solo work is also very well structured. An unsung pop stylist. #DeMarcoGuitars

Hi, enjoyed your balanced review. Regarding Mike's wedding, there's a photo of him in his all-white outfit and top hat in both "The Beach Boys Silver Anniversary" and "The Beach Boys by Dean Anthony" books. The former contains a b&w photo of him, Cathy, and Wolfman Jack, whilst the latter has a colour pic of him where it looks like he's singing at the ceremony (he's holding a microphone at least). Hope you're lucky enough to find those books as they're are visually great.

@chrisrainbow23936 жыл бұрын
in the mid 70s, mike love spent a lot of time talking about the DDs on capital radio London and I got the idea that he was a bit lost and didn't know what to do since brian wasn't producing so much material and he was always going on about how much better brian was doing and how he was working on the next BBs album , which was bound to be a smash but never was. I just have the feeling mike was lost and so we had celebration, which was a turntable hit here and was well received but looking back with love was largely ignored and could be found in bargain bins. having said all that, mike is the ideal front man who has always been entheuiastic about the BBs and he is great on stage, each of the group had a role and being out front entertaining between songs and doing interviews was his role and he did it well. its so easy to dismiss him, but that's unfair. oh, I love that t-shirt giggins, all the best man.

Chris man excellent comment, and I agree, it's too easy for people to bash Mike!

Yes, the lyrics for Good Vibrations are good, but to be fair it's only a co-write from Mike - Brian came up with the concept, and Mike just revised and rewrote some of them. On Brian's solo Smile album he even added back in the lyrics that Tony Asher co-wrote.
@JustinEdwords2 жыл бұрын
honestly, the original lyrics for good vibrations are atrocious. . I know everybody likes to hate on Mike but he totally gave that song the great vocal riff it needed to get to number one. . and no, I'm not a Mike fanboy or anything
@thecolinwalton2 жыл бұрын
@@JustinEdwords I wouldn't say the original lyrics were bad, but agree with the rest of that. My point was Brian had the basic idea, and Mike fixed them up. Brian is the one who came up with the phrase "Good Vibrations" etc. I don't love Mike, but I definitely don't hate him. I've got all his solo albums and solo tracks - and the guy definitely has certain strengths.
@JustinEdwords2 жыл бұрын
Colin Walton lets say the original lyrics wouldn’t have been a number one single. It would have been a curiousity like heroes and villains
@thecolinwalton2 жыл бұрын
@@JustinEdwords Yeah, probably not #1. Although I personally love Heroes and Villains, and Smiley Smile/The Smile Sessions are my favorite album of theirs, so I would have been happy either way. I think if I was make a cleaner point to Mike's post-surf/hot rod lyrics' strength, I would use the Wild Honey album as my example. The lyrics and music are great, and it's my second favorite Beach Boys album.
@JustinEdwords2 жыл бұрын
Colin Walton im not knocking heroes snd villains although its not my favorite track. Its cool to listen to but doesnt have a strong chorus IMO. the smiley smile album is one of my favorites, all the post pet sounds late 60s stuff. Of course Mike Love did some stellar vocals and i think lyrics on ‘meant for you’ and ‘all i wanna do’. Brian and Mike ard a great team, its really trite how people fall into mike bashing. There are people that will go with the original lyrics of ‘good vibrations’ and act like its the most amazing thing in the world when theres no real good hook, its not nearly as good of a pop song as the mike love lyrics, which are very clever rhythmically. You always hear how dumb the word ‘excitations’ is but come on, its great. Im not on team mike or brian, i just like good hooky effective and innovative music.

I bought this when it came out, played it about 5/6 times then totally forgot about it until this video. I don't remember anything about the songs you've mentioned here mainly because it was never released on CD and I don't have a turntabl anymore which means I can't play the record, but I do remember that I wasn't very impressed with the music. I know this guy's been having a lot of bad vibs by Beach Boys fans throughout his life, personally though I've always liked Mike Love. And if it wasn't for him the BBs wouldn't exist today. As you said he's written and sang lead on some of the best songs in music history. He's been been carying the BBs flag to every corner of the world for 60 years, and when we eventually come out of this lockdown?, the next time Mike Love steps out on stage as a Beach Boy he'll be 80 years old.

congrats on #100 giggens...! And as is usually the case, your take is very close to my own...I remember well haunting the record stores back in the '70's and '80's waiting and hoping to find a new release from my favorite band, the Beach Boys, so when Mike Love released this album back circa 1981, I bought it with high expectations... as there should have been since this was the Beach Boys front man who had co written so many classic songs for 20 years at the point of this release...Well, it has it's moments from a positive standpoint...But it really felt like it was just Mike trying to do a Beach Boys album without the Beach Boys, and it just doesn't work for the most part...Just as it doesn't work today, some nearly 40 years later with Mike touring around the country with some guys and calling themselves the Beach Boys...It doesn't work because it's not the Beach Boys, those harmonies can't be duplicated unless his name is Brian Wilson, who does so brilliantly on his own solo albums...But I will give Mike credit for trying, even if his efforts fall way short of where I hoped it would...I did like Running around the World, thought that was a catchy tune, and the 3 ballads that close out the album on side 2 were nice enough...The song Looking Back With Love is ok, definitely a juxtaposition of good times and bad through the years, but the cover songs on this album are awful, especially over and over...The Dave Clark Five should have sued Mike over that travesty, but I guess Mike was already up to his ears in law suits at the time, I'm sure he didn't need another one...Calendar Girl fares better, which isn't saying much, but Be My Baby should never have even been attempted...Some songs are so great, that any remake is simply pointless...it cannot help but fail, and fail miserably...and it does. I love what you said giggens, about maybe Mike was just trying to do something to make him feel good with all the negativity that was going on with the Beach Boys at the time, the group splintering, and wondering if it was all over, and the seemingly never ending lawsuits...And I hope it did make him feel good to put out something new...It just wasn't up to his own talents...I am a Mike Love fan...I'm just not a fan of this album...That being said, if it ever is released on cd, I will buy it...Except for Bruce Johnston's Going Public, Looking Back With Love is I believe the only Beach Boy solo album not available on cd...Despite its many flaws, I still hope it will see a cd release someday...Rock on giggens...I hope to see review 1000 and beyond...!

I am a long time Beach Boys fan, and it's always been considered hip or cool to put down Mike Love. Let's see, Mike supposedly didn't like Pet Sounds (although he sang on the album, and has publicly praised the album for decades now); it was all Mike's fault that Smile fell apart (because Mike had the audacity to question Van Dyke Parks about the meaning of his trippy lyrics...I mean, that's like asking God if he's really God, right? lol); Mike pushed them into being an oldies act (yeah, even though he worked just as hard as the others on the new music circa 1970-73, imploring audiences to be patient and try to appreciate the more mature songs); Mike hated Dennis (yup, square Mike was into meditation and healthy living while his cousin was being a cool rock star, doing drugs and drinking and killing himself in the process - but hey, this is rock and roll, we especially love those who die young...right, Gram Parsons? Right, Brian Jones? Yeah, no point in hanging around to 70 years of age and becoming - God forbid! - an oldies act); Mike turned the BB's show into a circus with the cheerleaders and car songs (yeah, cause I can't stand the sight of a bunch of gorgeous girls dancing to surf music!). I could go on, but lately, I think some folks are starting to look at Mike from a different perspective. No, I don't love everything he does, but he has been an important part of the band from the start - the bass parts on all those fast car and surf songs; writing lyrics for many of the melodies Brian came up with (Warmth of the Sun is one of the best lyrics ever, and Mike wrote them); being the frontman on stage, the guy who really tries to connect with the audience. And he is the lead singer on a LOT of their hit songs. So I am glad to see Giggens give a "fair and balanced" review of an album that most people just bash without even listening to. Hey, let's give Mike credit, at a time when the other BB's had given up on recording (except for Carl - touring and recording on his own at this time), Mike did something new. Not a great album, but at least he tried. That's more than Al Jardine was doing in 1981. That's more than Bruce Johnston or...yes, i'm gonna say it... Dennis or Brian were doing. Godo work, Giggens!

Make no mistake: Not every album has to have a clear artistic direction (i.e., Pet Sounds, That Lucky Old Sun). Sometimes an album can simply be a really good collection of really good songs (i.e., 20/20, Sunflower). LBWL seems to have no clear artistic direction, so is it a good collection of good songs? Lyrically, the title song was seeming like another "American Pie" kinda thing. I actually thought it was a good song, although Giggens makes some good points. I also agree with his comment on the faux-BB sounds, and a more squeaky version of Mike's own singing voice. The ballads are good, though. "Calendar Girl" and "Be My Baby" were recorded for the 15 Big Ones LP, so I suppose Mike wanted to get his versions out one way or another. Overall, it's weak -- but it's listenable, and has a few good songs.

I have been amazed how so many have labeled Love in a negative way. Love said, (paraphrase) "If you think Brian Wilson walks on water, then I'm the Antichrist". I got to see Love every time I saw the BBs, since the 60s. NEVER saw the Genius Brian Wilson for whatever reason (excuse) there was at the time. Always saw Mike Love. The BBs are the most recognized for the Capitol Record years. There is NO way you like the BBs without recognizing the fact he is a big part of the total BB sound...that is famous around the world. Brian Wilson is the so-called "Genius" with an "excuse". Mike Love was the simple solid cheerleader who consistently led the BBs. I'm no fan of Love...just giving him the respect that so many clowns who are BB fans deny him.

Great video, ive been very hesitant to check out any of Mike Love's solo stuff but now I might, I had no idea he recorded to unreleased albums in the late 70s I'll have to check those out for sure, You mentioned the version of "Be My Baby", I have a bootleg LP of the rejected Beach Boys album "Adult Child" and theres also a version of Be My Baby on it, they sound identical, so idk if the version on mikes album is from the adult child sessions or they took the song from mikes solo album to put on the bootleg, maybe you know? On a semi-related note, I found out a while back that Murry Wilson actually put out an album on Capital in 1967 called "The Many Moods of Murry Wilson" since you've been covering solo beach boys stuff (yes I know he wasnt a member of the band but still) I'd love to hear your thoughts/trivia on that album in an upcoming video Anyway, great stuff as always! ✌

Dude... All i do is dissect music...its the musician in me... I dissected Pet Sounds for months.... I've listened to this record while an open mind...that album still sucks after dissection.... Yea his whole "stick" live is him acting out the lyrics...

Hey Giggens, Been listening to Mike’s album lately and I have to say that I really enjoy this album. I appreciate your review and I can agree with some of your lyrical concerns but, overall I’m stoked that Mike recorded this album.

I have reviewed this album and tried to give Mike the benefit of the doubt but it really is horrible. It just goes to illustrate Mike could never do anything good or with any substance without Brian Wilson. Be my baby is destroyed the only way Mike could. The album is really regrettable. Mike, Stay with your BB cover band at the local fairs.

Very balenced review. Would you say "Looking back with love" is better or worse than "Unleash the love"? Pondering question for sure!!

Phew...that's a hard comparison! Ehhhh maybe I'd say UTL is better? Gotta review that one soon haha. What do you think?

Giggens at least this album doesn’t torture you with a full albums worth of ungodly, tonedeaf and out of touch covers of BB tunes

This video is WAY too long. The most it should be is 10 seconds. "This album is terrible, Mike Love is terrible on this album and the album title is TERRIBLE." Next!
