In December 1994, the French counter-terrorism unit, National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (G.I.G.N.), was placed on standby to intervene in a hostage situation unfolding onboard Air France Flight 8969, F-GBEC, which had been seized by Algerian terrorists. Once all efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution had collapsed, the G.I.G.N. was sent in to retake the aircraft and rescue the hostages; an Operation that was captured live on camera.

Honestly I’m French and I studied it. And that’s exactly how it happened. They were so fed up that they didn’t have the chance to storm the plane before that when they got the opportunity they fucking ran for it. Those guys were tough, It takes balls to enter a tube of steel, they didn’t know if they were going out but they were sure to get empty all the bullets in their guns on them. Props to the first guy standing at the door, he took like 7-8 bullets and also some Grenades injuries but he kept fighting

G.I.G.N are famous for their affinity with revolvers (mostly ceremonial these days but some still use them in the field.) particularly in the 90s they prefered them to more modern pistols. the rationale is their simplistic action meant they were quicker to unholster and make ready, ideal for snap-shot situations. And we are talking about elite counter terrorist troops, six shots would be more than adequate. there are several accounts of G.I.G.N operators spending countless hours honing their skills with them.

Don't forget the successful and almost impossible daring Operation Thunderbolt in 1976, from the Israeli forces. On 27 June 1976, an Air France flight 139 took off from Tel Aviv, destination CdG-Paris, with onboard 246 passengers mostly Jewish, and a crew of 12. Among the passengers 2 Palestinian and 2 German terrorists. Upon, landing in Athens it picked up 58 more passengers including 4 more terrorists. To cut a long story, short the plane was diverted to Entebbe Uganda. The result: 7 hijackers killed, 10 hostages wounded, 4 Killed, 5 Israeli soldiers wounded, and 1 killed, Lt. Jonathan Netanyahu, former Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's older brother. The rest is history.

The second man in the column and first in the aircraft, Thierry Prungnaud, sustained a LOT of enemy fire ( he took 7 bullets in total, one is still today in his shoulder). Putting his well being on the side, he continued his assault on the cockpit until he was taken out of the fight by a bullet to the face and a grenade. He lived througt his injuries but remained partially handicaped and his operational carreer pretty much ended here. His courage and combativity were noticed by many counter terrorism units around the world and the Navy seals made him an honorable member of their unit. A really cool picture of the major Prungnaud, in great Gendarmerie uniform whith the seals' trident on his chest can be seen on the internet. The major Prungnaud has a very interesting life and career .He killed a gunman on his very first mission for the GIGN, wrote a controversial book on the horrors he witness in Rwanda, and is a highly decorated Gendarmerie NCO. I also recomend you the movie "L'Assaut" on Flight 8969 incident.

@Till This Day GIGN (Groupe d'intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale; English: National Gendarmerie Intervention Group) is the elite police tactical unit of the French National Gendarmerie. The National Gendarmerie (French: Gendarmerie nationale [ʒɑ̃daʁməʁi nasjɔnal]) is one of two national police forces of France, along with the National Police. It is a branch of the French Armed Forces placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior-with additional duties to the Ministry of Defense. Its area of responsibility includes smaller towns, rural and suburban areas, while the Police Nationale, a civilian force, is in charge of cities and their centres. I can’t imagine what must be going on in the GIGN officers’ minds: they train all year long for situations like this one but reality is so brutal. I watched a documentary about the hard selection, the physical and psychological training, the regular checkups to verify if they are able to carry out any mission at anytime and it’s such a dedication. Their ability to make the fastest decisions, to act accordingly and to remain stoic is really impressive.

They surprisingly carry out 200 missions a year, 100 of which fall into the expected counter-terrorism and hostage situation missions (with the oddball prison mutiny). All of these have some level of risk, from facing assault riffles to a bloke with a pitchfork. I'm assuming the other 100 are escort/security missions and the like. I doubt many missions are as perilous as this but it isn't like they wake up one day and go from training straight into combat. Fun fact I picked up from a documentary. They often say that their trainnig is harder and more dangerous than most of their missions.

Few hours before they practiced the assault with the mobile stairs on another aircraft in a maintenance hangar. The plane was empty and not fueled. When they went to open the door on the hijacked plane, its door was a few centimeters lower than the stairs... because it was partially fueled and loaded, therefore heavier, and sitting slightly lower on its tires. Even the best cannot think about everything, but they masterfully adapted to the situation. I am amazed by the coordination and reaction to such a big surprise, in such a critical moment.

This was the incident that introduced the world to the GIGN! Much like the Prince's Gate assault by the SAS. What an amazing operation! It's a testament to their skill and ferocity that more hostages weren't killed. It was a worst case situation; many well armed and trained terrorists in a fortified location, surrounded by hostages. There's a reason this one is still being studied and analyzed decades later.

Actually, I think it was the GIGN operation in Djibitou in 1976 that introduced the unit to the world. Terrorists had seized a bus full of French school children. The GIGN delivered drugged food to the children to put them to sleep, leaving only the terrorists standing. Synchronized sniper fire took out most of the terrorists. Another one had to be neutralized at close quarters with shots from a service revolver.

Unlike vehicles, where holes can either be patched or panels can be replaced, neither can be done to a commercial jet. The fuselage is one singular pressurized tube, so replacing sections of it would be a very time consuming and expensive process that would basically require the entire fuselage to be disassembled and rebuilt. The damage caused by a bullet puncturing the skin of the aircraft could potentially cause major issues that simple patches wouldn't solve, such as micro-fractures and a general weakening of the pressure cylinder's integrity. This could lead to.more serious problems, such as a sudden loss of cabin pressure mid-flight. Therefore, even though the damage might not look like much, it was safer to scrap it to avoid the possibility of future incidents with the aircraft.

It's a detail but Thierry Prungnaud, the first operator to go into the cockpit had a Manurhin revolver, not an MP5. He killed 2 of terrorists straight away, wounded a third and got hit by the fourth who was hiding next to the cockpit door. He received several shots in his right arm, if I'm not mistaken, which is now permanently impaired, plus some other in his helmet. He fell down just outside of the cockpit. He sustained additional wounds when a grenade thrown by the terrorist blew right next to him as he was lying ont the floor. There are several interviews of him on YT, albeit mostly in French.

Yep, the movie "L'Assaut" depicted this just as you described. In the movie, he put a .357 Magnum right in the head of the first terrorist, and hit the second terrorist in the chest. The guy took a long time to die (not sure if that was how it went in real life).

The "machine guns" were overkill and hindered them. Theybwere AK's and not machine guns. At these distances, a bullet is a bullet. Except that a 7.62 will not even notice (interior) aircraft walls and the AK's are MUCH slower to bring to bear then a handgun and are more difficult to aim in thus kind of a confined space. Allowing speed, flexibility and suprise and concealment.

@Lord Admiral Spire Wrong. Rifles are not better in ALL close combat situations. In WW1, tunnelers who dug underground to get to the enemy trenches would come across other enemy tunnelers. They have a similar level of intensity training than special forces and they even train for underwater operations. GIGN can even operate outside of France like last year in Mali for exemple. Our police intervention group are RAID and BRI to name a few and they only operate on french soil (there might be an exception I don't know of)

@@Xomatik123 False.

@@irov5884 "the GIGN is not a special force, just a police intervention group. Imagine what french special forces are capable to do then." This statement doesn't make sense. It implies an imaginary hierarchy between the GIGN and other Special Forces. However, each SF nit has its own specialty, at which it excells. Some units have overlapping competences, but generally speaking, the SF are all very specialized. GIGN is best at what it does, which is anti-terror intervention. And make nop mistake this is a military unit. If French special forces are highly capable and amongst the best in the world, GIGN, which is the elite of the Gendarmerie (a branch of the military), is part of them. They are just not in the COS for political and practical reasons, and because they mostly intervene on French soil. But it's military.

In the french version, a gign operator states that the plane they used was the exact same model as the one hijacked. In order for them to be familiar with the operation. In addition, the plane could only take off, after heavy pressure from the french government as Algeria was wanting to intervene on its own soil with its own security services.

What make them the best to me is that they always try to take the hostage taker alive through negotiations or by shoting hands and knees in extreme cases. When most forces just use the easy way of an headshot once assault started.

@Lord Admiral Spire no for an gign operator this guys have aimbot, they can shoot a bullet at a precise point in your body. They can even shoot you at a precise point in the neck to paralyse you instantly before you actually die in case you holding hostages. If you are less the 30/20 meters, they only need one bullet to kill/paralyze you instantly. The revolver is really useful for hostage situations, when you are send on the situation as a fake employee / negotiator or what ever to kill the terrorist. It's ez to hide.
