That's correct. Mostly because of it being the geographic center of Asturias. The real reason though, I can't say for sure why... I'm not that versed in history.

I don't know if everything happens for a reason, as much as we find/create reasons for it happening, after the fact, that somehow bring us a little peace of mind 🤔 Thank you for sharing your experiences. My wife and I will be following the northern route of the Camino de Santiago in July/August of 2026...though we will be going by train and bus rather than walking. Your videos gave us some ideas as to what to do in this area of Gijon (including a day trio to Covadanga and the Roman baths beneath Iglesia de San Pedro...which I would not have even known to do without you mentioning it). My 2 daughters lived in Gijon for years and one still does. Both of their partners and spouses are from Gijon. It is a great city in a uniquely beautiful Province. Best: you don't hear much about it because many Spanish vacation there. Don't expect a lot of English speakers. Do expect gracious people everywhere!

Hola Elliot, a mi que me gusta mucho la historia de España leí en alguna parte que Don Pelayo el guerrero visigodo que derrotó a los musulmanes en Covadonga y que fue el inicio de la reconquista, murió de la manera más increíble y estúpida y no fue en una batalla sino en una cacería de jabalíes, dudo mucho que ese detalle lo sepan los chavales de hoy en día que se dedican al vandalismo por pura diversión.

Good question. .. for bigger cities undoubtedly Bilbao and and Santander .. for smaller towns/cities I would suggest Llanes (Asturias) ribadesella.. Gijon if you have time

Gracias Elliot for another update. As you know graffiti is so widespread in Spain, see a flat surface and they seem to spray paint it. When you see either statues or certainly anything historic is unforgivable to be honest. When I am in Spain there always seems to be more added. Apart from that Gijón is very nice and has an old world charm in some way. Gracias
