I always wash all textiles first and add wet to pot - These are the items I use . I can’t grow these in the garden anymore here because I don’t have the room for more than my roses and flowers - Oh roses create a gorgeous (dye dried red rose petals ) is gorgeous!! The veggies I use and what results I get - Red/Pink: Beets Avocado- only stones no skins ( I cut the seeds ( 4-5 ) and simmer in the water 1 hr . ) = Pink Purple: Red Cabbage, Blackberries Orange or Yellow: Onion Skins, Carrots Green: Spinach, Celery Tops, Basil, Carrot tops Adding the bi carb soda gives you all sorts of gorgeous colors Thank you for sharing grapes 🍇

At this point, your fabric should be wet. The fibers bond to color best when they are wet. Place your fabric into your pot of room temperature dye. Bring your mixture to a simmer for 15 minutes to 45 minutes and gently move your fabric around to ensure it picks up an even amount of color. Remove the pot from the stove when your fabric has reached a color you are happy with.Add salt and rinse well with cool water. Allow your dyed fabric to slowly cool down on its own in the pot. You can leave the fabric in the pot overnight if you want the color to be stronger. The longer you leave it, the deeper the color. I have found with all of my vegetables that cotton takes the longest to get my desired color. I absolutely will try the grapes and can hardly wait!!

Hi Sweet friend, thank you for your message. It was so much appreciated!! Oh my goodness look what you have done !! I do the same with purple cabbage by adding the bi carb soda !! I do 3 containers so I get a dark purple lavender & blue !! But NEVER EVER thought of grapes 🍇 you are a genius Gi. I did find if I beat set the fabric it never dulls. I used to dye silks using only veggi dyes . Then of course paper happened 💜 Paper I have to soak a while in the house and dry in the shade or I find it fades. I add two times the amount of water in proportion to fruit or vegetable ingredients. Place this on low heat. Bring it to a simmer for about one hour. You should start to notice that the dye from your vegetables has started to transfer into the water. Turn heat off and allow the water to return to room temperature. Pour dye through a strainer and into a larger mixing bowl to remove the solid materials. Then I transferred the fabrics n dye back into the pot.

Beautiful colors Gi! Grapes are a wonderful pH indicator in the science world..purple grapes are already acidic so when baking soda was added, the juice became alkaline or basic and turned blue...if lemon, lime juice or vinegar was added to the original plain grape juice to make it even more acidic, it would become more red or pink. just in case anyone was interested..lol.. Red cabbage juice will also change a variety of beautiful colors, but the smell is not so pleasant! tfs, take care❤

What beautiful results! I have dyed fabric & papers using a variety of items. Two of my favs are rose hips and wild raspberries (wild to me anyway). I have tried a variety of spices, fruits, veg, flowers, etc. Some give great results; others do not. As someone else mentioned here, when doing fabric, I always do the heating thing. For paper, I use high gsm watercolor, printmaking or mixed media paper and pre-wet in an alum/water bath. Gives me great results. It isn’t as easy to presoak average artist paper or copy paper and the alum helps to pick up and retain the color, so that is my reason for the quality paper. It still yields beautiful results regardless of the gsm and presoak, though. Science/chemistry is cool!

Love this. I used to hook rugs using wool fabric. I loved dyeing it especially with naturals. I never used salt but would fix my dyes with vinegar or citric acid. I never had fading. But love this with the soda change. I also dye a lot of my papers. I sometimes spray them to give a different look and use stencils also before spraying. If you want a luscious pink try avocado skins and seeds.
