Of course in the books the reason for the invasion of Eregion was that Sauron learned of the repentance of Celebrimbor (when the One Ring was forged) and went in force to sieze the Great Rings. Here, the reason for Sauron to arrange the attack on Eregion is, um, because, well, um, you see… oh, this is Rings of Power. Who needs reasons anyway?

The actor is chosen to look stupid and the writing is made so that he look impotent and weak. All in an effort to make Galardiels teenage rebelllion to look better in comparison. Off course everything is about Galadriel, this is a chick fight show after all.

I'm convinced none of the people behind this travesty, from the producers to the show runners to the writers, none of them have actually _read_ any Tolkien. I suspect they just watched the movies, and even them some of them probably skipped some scenes or fell asleep. Based on this they figured they 'got' Tolkien and in turn vomited out this trash.

But the fanatics will just cancel absolutely everything now (just like the woke-people do, irony at best), and after a few years cry why nothing new is being done - just like with the 3A-gaming industry.

Gil-galad was an elven-king. Of him the harpers sadly sing; the last whose realm was fair and free between the Mountains and the Sea. His sword was long, his lance was keen. His shining helm afar was seen; the countless stars of heaven's field were mirrored in his silver shield. But long ago he rode away, and where he dwelleth none can say; for into darkness fell his star in Mordor where the shadows are. There was a time that the non story of Gil-galad was a taste of something so tragic and so epic that you were left wondering. Whatever this trash is. It is not that story. I sang this song as a lullaby when my sons were babies. I knew it off by heart because it had heart.

Thanks for posting that here, and thank you for sharing your memory of it - I can see it, and feel it. It's easy enough to ignore ROP for those who know better, but it's painful to think of those who don't have that grounding, who will think that _this_ has anything remotely to do with Tolkien.

@@takuid The problem with this show is that they turned it into a politically driven soap opera. LOTR is myth. An epic tale and has a world it exists in that makes it what it is. ROP is the gutter for everything good and beautiful in the real LOTR.

Since Morfydd Clark's diminutive stature was apparently not a an issue when casting the character of Galadriel, the showrunners may as well have cast Dafne Keen in the role. They could have really leaned into the whole 'Galadriel was much shorter, angrier, and prone to violence in the Second Age' angle. It would be highly entertaining to see Dafne shred through scenes as Galadriel somehow channeling X-23.

I'm retired Army. Eregion is on the way to Mordor. So it makes no strategic sense to split the army. All of the elves can go to Eregion first and then on to Mordor. Only one road exists connecting the two and it runs through the gap between the mountains.

Taking a peak at several varieties of maps, I was considering trying to figure out how they could get to Mordor and not go through Eregion. In general, sure, it absolutely IS possible. However, if you're going by land there's no real reason not to go to Eregion, its far too central of a location. It makes more sense in the Third Age because Eregion fell, and Rivendell is much further north. That being said, did not Galadriel suggest they go by ship up river and into Mordor that way? If they went with THAT suggestion, that could be what royally screwed them up. There's only about two rivers you could argue might even go into Mordor, which both probably require them to go south of Gondor. So they likely set sail from Lindon and went south around the continent if they went with Galadriel's plan, rather than taking horses by foot and passing through Eregion on the way.

I took science at school and did some engineering physics and chemistry at university. I'm trying to work out how they dug a tunnel from a river hundreds of miles south to reach this volcano, then triggered its flow from a mechanism CLOSER TO THE VOLCANO. Yay, engineering. Let alone, you know, water in that volume of a volcano triggering that kind of eruption, yay vulcanology. Let alone it setting houses and horses on fire, but not singing Galadriel's hair. Yay, materials science. Let alone the fake Hobbits being thrown up in the air by a tornado, but just getting up and walking off. Yay, ballistic physics and... anatomy?

In the inevitable head-to-head battle between Sauron and Gil-galad (and Elendil, of course), I'd be cheering for Sauron. No offense to the actor playing him, but this Gil-galad is as appealing as 1970s-era wallpaper. These filmmakers haven't gotten a single character right in this whole show.

Silly me, I should have added - given that surely they have people who work building sets and forging weapons - or at least they hired a jeweller somewhere to make rings (unless godshelpusall they're just 3D printed?)... they could've asked something about how rings are made and how forges work. ... you know, or how alloys work.

Spinning this off of something someone said a while back - he comes off as a power-tripping night shift manager at Burger King. There is no majesty in this portrayal, no gravity, no "secure in my own skin" sense that a being that old should exude. The excuse about not having the rights confuses me, as even just LOTR and its appendices provide quite a bit of backstory on the forging of the rings and the timeline. There might be enough detail restricted to other works that they could justify fudging some details and switching around or inventing some characters. But not this. Not the mess that we have been subjected to.

Before this show started I was very excited to see Gil-galad on screen. The songs about him in the LotR and the stories make him sound awesome. In this thing he is an incompetent looser. It's so sad.
