Gil’s take on Kawhi not D’ing up Bron is wild. Bron was literally shaking his head whenever Kawhi was checking back in. Bron’s numbers mostly came from other defenders and off of fastbreak points. But when they were matched up in the half court, Bron was noticeably bothered and frustrated. And I love Iggy but other than his athleticism, Kawhi is on another level as far as shooting, handles, scoring and just being able to carry the load offensively. Both clutch though and both great perimeter defenders.

For those who bring up Lebron’s numbers obviously didn’t watch the series . Kawhi was literally all over the floor defensively ,effecting the course of a 4-1 15+ pt difference while in games 3-5 going on 20-25 ppg run on crazy efficiency. Holding Lebron to roughly 28-35% shooting while having a high turnover rate and even making him passive/ ineffective in the series. Lebron literally got his numbers while being down 15-25 pts when either they weren’t worried about him or Kawhi and the starters sat out. Kawhi also was scoring regardless of his matchups rather it was Lebron , Battier , Bosh etc. So that’s why he won finals mvp, nobody remembers it because it was a blowout and didn’t want to hold Lebron accountable for getting dusted that series.

The shift happened when Kawhi took over the series starting in game 3 which set the Spurs tone and they didn’t look back for the rest of the series for a gentleman sweep. Kawhi , and that was prime Lebron’s assignment, was producing and Lebron couldn’t produce or matchup to his production. Yea Wade was slightly not himself that series but he wasn’t himself for 3 straight years to that point and they still came out and got 2 credit to the heat but that’s cause Lebron was actually solid to great. If you took Kawhi out or even significantly decrease his effectiveness that’s a competitive series. So once again with Leonard going off and Lebron is either playing bad/passive Kawhi can now contribute with help defense and passing lanes which made that a complete nightmare for the heat team and the spurs ran them out of there.

Yo this is such a wild take! We could appreciate Iggy's career without making outrageous claims. Over the course of their careers, Kawhi has been better than Iggy in almost every aspect of the game. Even at his athletic peak, Iggy never even averaged more than 20 points per game. Are we gonna ignore Kawhi's DPOYs? We can give Iggy the edge when it comes to health and availability. That's about it. Let's remove both their FInals MVPs against LeBron from the discussion, just to be fair. Neither the eye test nor the numbers support Iggy being better than Kawhi. I'm just struggling to make sense of this.

Anybody who watched the series and didn’t just look at the box score knows Kawhi shut Lebron down when HE was guarding him. Miami did everything possible to forces switches and have Lebron attack when Kawhi was guarding someone else or on the bench. There’s a whole meme associated with Bron seeing Kawhi check in the game. To be clear Kawhi deserved the MVP of that finals and Miami lost that year by the biggest loss margin in finals history.
