I think Gil was a genius. A tortured one, but then he *would* do drugs by the truckload. Few people ever reached the brutal honesty of his songs, this is a good example. Except towards the end, all his stuff is this kind of quality, always had a great band, and delivered great, conscious lyrics. You could react to most of it, there isnt much filler. The flute player is Brian Jackson iirc, he had a long collaboration with Gil till they fell out, he did some killer solo stuff, and played on a lot of other peoples records, Jackson is worth checking out in his own right

His debut album "Pieces of a Man"(1971) is a masterpiece, worth to listen from start to finish.

Thank you for doing this suggestion of mine, it's always really appreciated, Chris and Cynthia. It's a great groove and an important message too, as well as being a big Northern Soul track. Other tracks to check out by him are: "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Johannesburg", "Save The Children", "Pieces of a Man", "Whitey On The Moon", "We Almost Lost Detroit", "Angel Dust", "I Think I'll Call It a Morning", "H2O Blues", "Small Talk at 125th and Lennox", "Lady Day and John Coltrane", "Gun", "B Movie", "Ain't No Such Thing As Superman", "Shut 'em Down", "Me and The Devil", "Ain't Really a Life", "Winter In America". There are many more but these are great ones to continue with.

This is a worldwide well known track , so surprised you haven’t heard it before . Not only is it a great groove , but the bass is back in the mix which is a shame cos dude is giving it some and the lyrics are well worth studying g as the guy was a poet ! Love this song 👍🏴

Chris and Cynthia this song would have been great for 'Who Did it Better' because a group named 'Brother 2 Brother' also did this song. Both songs were out at the same time, and are so closely similar regarding the sound. Gil had lyrics, the Brother 2 Brother version didn't.

GSH once stayed in a hotel I was working in, I never saw him and the rest of his band because they arrived after I finished my shift and left before I started my next shift but I remember one of the duty managers saying they were a bit loud and boisterous when they arrived and she was a bit scared of them until they invited her out for a drink. She said she had a great time.
