Mom played this album religiously in 1978 & 1979. I still remember Falling asleep to this song as the smoky spell of pot & jasmine incense danced hand in hand down our hallway with the music into my bedroom. Outside my window the soft amber streetlight glow illuminated the lilacs petals waving at me in the summer evening air. Gils steady voice fades my senses and sleep pulls the covers over me kissing me goodnight.

(LYRICS) It stands out on a highway Like a Creature from another time. It inspires the babies' questions, "What's that?" For their mothers as they ride. But no one stopped to think about the babies Or how they would survive, And we almost lost Detroit This time. How would we ever get over Loosing our minds? Just thirty miles from Detroit Stands a giant power station. It ticks each night as the city sleeps Seconds from anniahlation. But no one stopped to think about the people Or how they would survive, And we almost lost Detroit This time. How would we ever get over Over loosing our minds? The sherrif of Monroe county had, Sure enough disasters on his mind, And what would karen Silkwood say If she was still alive? That when it comes to people's safety Money wins out every time. And we almost lost Detroit This time, this time. How would we ever get over Over loosing our minds? You see, we almost lost Detroit That time. Almost lost Detroit That time. And how would we ever get over... Cause odds are, We gonna loose somewhere, one time. Odds are We gonna loose somewhere sometime. And how would we ever get over Loosing our minds? And how would we ever get over Loosing our minds? Didn't they, didn't they decide? Almost lost Detroit That time. Damn near totally destroyed, One time. Didn't all of the world know? Soooo much I could never write it here...but my family...The Heron family (especially old man Gil) nourished me and taught me so much, and how to see myself different. I never told her, but I was always in love with Heather. Joey was always my guy...Kenny taught me so much....and old man Gil was a friend to my grandfather that I never got to meet and told me of him...soooo much I could say...not enough room😥

Just got an original copy of the vinyl record. I must play this song a lot. I played it the other day and my 15 year old son was singing it word for word . Caught me by surprise. I must be raising his ears well… classic , real music

Thank you I am so appreciative of all of this magical masculine music. My ears are having an orgasm. This was the music I listened to during my younger days, high school in Newark. I'm loving this station. Feel lucky that I was blessed to find it. I love these songs and these groups. Thanks again for this delightful feelings these songs bring.

As a kid growing up in Detroit and visiting relatives via car in many states connected via highway, we passed this scene (Power Plant) many times and this song so encompasses the feeling one gets when these "creatures" come out from nowhere. Folks talk about auras, I could tell when we were getting near their power it was like a rumble within one's spirit.

i hope that the remix albums, hip-hop samples, and tributes will get future generations into GSH. a very musically-inclined friend of mine had never even heard of him, so i had to send her this. of all the mid-century musicians that ought to leave a lasting legacy, Gil is very much near the top of the list. Rest in Power.

Gil Scott Heron - We almost Lost Detroit It stands out on a highway Like a creature from another time It inspires the babies' questions "What's that?" For their mothers as they ride But no one stopped to think about the babies Or how they would survive And we've almost lost Detroit This time How would we ever get over Losing our minds? Just thirty miles from Detroit Stands a giant power station It ticks each night as the city sleeps Seconds from annihilation But no one stopped to think about the people Or how they would survive And we almost lost Detroit This time How would we ever get over Over losing our minds? The sherriff of Monroe county had Sure enough disasters on his mind And what would Karen Silkwood say If she was still alive? That when it comes to people's Money wins out every time And we've almost lost Detroit This time, this time How would we ever get over Over losing our minds? You see, we almost lost Detroit That time Almost lost Detroit That time And how would we ever get over 'Cause odds are We gonna lose somewhere, one time Odds are We gonna lose somewhere, sometime And how would we ever get over Losing our minds? And how would we ever get over Losing our minds? Didn't they, didn't they decide? Almost lost Detroit That time Damn near totally destroyed One time Didn't all of the world know Say didn't you know Didn't all of the world know Say didn't you know When we almost lost Detroit

Gil Scott's poetry is amazing. He truly is a founding father of hip hop/ rap
@samuelsantiago-cruz99039 жыл бұрын
How so? *****
@samuelsantiago-cruz99039 жыл бұрын
Oh, well. His music is actually called Proto-Rap. Rap was actually productized in 79, his music is blues and jazz but his music was one of the main influences to bring in lyrics towards rap. ***** I didn't mean it literally, I meant it metaphorically.
