Gilbert Caroff Super Disko Steel Expedition sailboat with electric motors! Report 20

We have shown bits and pieces of Hakluyt in previous videos - but here is the overview of Hakluyt's main features. Hakluyt is quite different from standard production sailboats in many ways - not only because of her electric motors but her original design incorporated notable features so she was ready for polar regions. She is a mix between a live aboard and expedition style sailboat leaning more towards the expedition style boat. We define "expedition" style sailing as that which allows more storage and off-grid capabilities enabling us to spend longer periods of time in more isolated and remote places without having to stock up on food, gas, or water.
Hakluyt was built in Chantier Brument, France. She is a steel, 47 foot "Super Disko" whose design was drafted by renowned French Naval architect Gilbert Caroff. She has a noticeable steep raked bow designed for riding up and over low icebergs or growlers (larger submerged chunks of ice) and has a shallow draft with a lifting keel to provide safety and maneuverability in arctic regions where ice flows often force boats to shallower waters. Her flat bottom belly allows Hakluyt to be easily beached in emergencies or when the opportunity presents itself. Her accommodations and interior are built for expeditionary work and field research. This isn't really a "pleasure craft" in the conventional nautical sense, but a working expedition vessel!

Just binge watched all your videos. I hope one day to do some similar sailing. You do a good job at capturing "real sailing". Very interested to see how going a 100% electric drive pans out. One minor criticism is I think your music choices & vol is a bit "heavy handed"( Overpowering). Some great mooring locations though. 🍀

Hi guys , i’ve just watched your video And loving the idea of going 100% electric. I am in contact with Wayne Peters from Ocean Volt . I’m thinking about the same setup as you have just smaller. I’m looking to purchase an island trader 38, which I intend to sail singlehanded from Portsmouth UK, around Ireland up the West Coast of Britain, up to the Faroe islands then Iceland, and Greenland before going down for Antarctica. But the issues that you guys seem to be having with regeneration !! Would be a big problem for me on such a small boat. I know have lots of videos to catch up on.
