It's a quality person that would admit his errors and publicly apologize for them-the kind of person to whom I'd want to continue listening.

You're absolutely correct. Being as critical as I am about other reacting influencers that's really saying something.

Just a beautiful heartfelt song that most everyone can relate to at some time in their life. I've always loved this song.

Gilbert in an interview said that it is not about him. He merely put himself in the position of a person who felt this way. Now that is genius writing. It is an upbeat,.. sad song. One of my favorites. Great reaction Ace. Thanks for doing this one.

It’s a heart wrenchingly sad song and it’s okay to feel sad and lonely and cry during the rocky times in your life. Tears wash away the pain leaving you able to appreciate the light, the joy and the beautiful mornings even more😊❤🎉☀️☀️❤

Sad songs are cathartic, allowing for a constructive expression of real feelings. They can actually lift you up, after they give you a good cry. They are especially helpful when a straight path to "happy" seems empty and unreal, because these songs are full of meaning, full of life, the opposite of emptiness.

When you've lost enough people, to death, or having them walk away from you, you truly get this song. I have questioned my very existence, because the hurt was so much. I've come to know, I am worthy, but it is tough.

I've not experienced all of these things described in the song, yet I understand the feeling of being alone he sings about. That's how I felt for many years. But the line that really gets me is "It seems to me that there are more hearts broken in the world, that can't be mended. Left unattended. What do we do?"

Remember, as humans we experience not only happiness, love and joy, but sadness, anger and LONLINESS. So, as an artist he is trying to elicit this emotion in this song on purpose, for a reason, he's painting a picture of lonely human beings. That's a real thing, and he conveys that emotion as an artist very eloquently. We have all been lonely at times, this song brings back to mind for us those lonely times.

I heard the song when i was a kid, and never listened to the lyrics back then. I never even heard kids at school talk about it. It was only about 15 years ago when i actually saw a YT video talking about it, especially that shocking first verse. A song with lyrics about suicide! Why was the song not ever banned, or why wasn't it more popular back then in the 70's, or even controversial back then? Then i realized how sad the song was, a real tear-jerker! It's always been a good song! Thanks for sharing your revised reaction to it.

It's a great song. Beautifully told. Able to communicate the sad and tragic mood and yet keep a light musical tone. If I listen to the lyrics, it takes me right down into the sore and sympathetic feelings. It goes deeper than "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles, a song of a similar theme. These days, the final verse strikes me harder, as both parents have now passed.

If anyone has lost their Mum and Dad, they will know the pain that can create, even more so when the one left feels helpless and totally alone. I can only think back to when my Dad passed away and we went to see him for the last time - to see Mum talking to Dad and asking if he was alright breaks your heart - even thinking about that now breaks me up. In the song, he questions if God does exist - why did he desert me……something to ponder unless you are super religious. So yeah - a song like this can make you think of being alone in many situations and asking the question “Why”? I agree with you that the melody is very nice in contrast to dark and meaningful lyrics….but isn’t that genius in a way? Personally - I think this is remarkable pop music and rightly viewed as a classic - Esther Phillips does a nice version of this song.

It takes a big man to admit his mistakes and you did just fine, I also used to drink heavily and I quit drinking in 1980, it changed my life for the better and I'm sure it will yours too! The people that really love you will stick it out with you like I am doing and so many others it seems. No one should hold it against you especially since you have owned up to it and admitted your mistake, maybe you needed our encouragement to get you started in the right direction but you are the one doing the hard work! Love from Michigan!

Dude, you are allowed to say whatever you want, and u also have the right to not take everything ,every pundit or critic on the internet, says to or about you. Stop apologizing. Your generation seems to take everything too personally. My generation grew up with the saying… Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Regardless of the message, musically it’s a beautiful song.

This song covers a lot. Loss, depression and loneliness are things that have always existed. This song probably hits even more today. Ace, it seems like today's society (or KZbin) is making it not okay to even mention the words like loss, depression or loneliness. We have to be able to talk through these topics. Music and talking help to lift a person's spirit. You probably heard your dog more than we did. I'm hoping in the future you are able to say what's on your mind without needing to apologize or dance around the words. Free speech used to be a thing, hopefully still is.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Many of us have been listening to these songs for 50 years. A first time reaction can easily misinterpret or get things wrong. We don't expect perfectionism from reactors. We expect honest reactions. This second time around was a very honest reaction.

My advice after watching one live performance stick to radio or studio versions that's what we all heard. So too fully react that's the way to do it. In my opinion.
