I was 10 years and was so in love with this song. I got the vinyl album for christmas and I am sure I wore it out. It's so funny how a song can just transport you back to a place and time and all the feelings come right to the surface like it was yesterday.

Gilbert's gentle sad songs capture the good feeling amongst people of that generation, inspiring the values and respect of others that we hold dear. Simply put, the importance in making us think about the things we do before we do them. His music evokes compassion and warmth.

This may just be his best song. After having to put up with all the junk on radio today, it makes me appreciate the simplicity and vocal ability of a great singer even more. My wife thinks I an old fogie (43?) for listening to this. Meanwhile she listens to the crappy processed vocals of todays "artists". There is something to be said for a song like this to stand the test of time, while today's songs fade into oblivion after their Top 40 status rubs out. Great video, great artist.

Great song. Gilbert is the master of the subtle key change. All of a sudden the harmonica comes in a semitone higher, then casually wanders back into the original key with such ease that you're left wondering if there's been a key change at all. The only other person I can think of who did this sort of thing as well was Frederick Chopin. Gilbert's lyrics are first class too. He's a true musical genius.

Every single Gilbert OSullivan album is filled with pop gems but my personal favourite has always been his 2nd, Back To Front from 1972. Clair and the accompanying album Back To Front(1972) was Gilbert OSullivans crowning moment as THE biggest UK Pop star of the era. Both the single and the album reached number 1 on the charts and found the fascinating singer/songwriter refining his image and musical style, dropping the pudding basin haircut, suit too small and cloth clap, growing out his hair and introducing an endless stream of G sweaters in all the different colours of the spectrum! An amazing artist and he's still going strong in 2022!

Clair was the ultimate crowning of Gilbert OSullivan as THE most popular and arguably finest pop artist of his day. Sure, Alone Again Naturally had topped the US charts in the summer of 1972 but it stalled at number 3 in Britain. Clair reached the number one spot and equally important, his second album Back To Front, released the same month also reached number one on the album charts in Britain. Gilbert OSullivan would soar through 1973 and 1974 as a massively successful artist, both commercially and artistically, composing music of Beatles quality!

That's a beautiful song and a great version of it. I first heard this lovely song (an instrumental version) in the 1970s, and for the next 35 years or so, I searched high and low for it on an LP or Cassette Tape or CD, without success. Finally, I got it in May 2007 on a CD by Acker Bilk.
