Great interview. 'We Will' is my favourite of his, followed by 'Claire'. I was brought up in a working-class family of 5 kids in the 70s. Gilbert's songs resonated then - and still do now.

In my opinion, Nothing Rhymed is one of the best pop songs ever written. A classic

I'm 64 and I still choke up when I hear 'I remember I cried when my father died, Never wishing to hide the tears.' Those two lines are two of the most powerful lines of songwriting I've ever heard. I was 12 when the song came out and even though I hadn't gone through it myself, they struck me even then.
@geoff-l3vАй бұрын
I was doing my version of that song today and my goodness I kept breaking down at that line so put it off for tomorrow and then I started watching this and saw your comment. I can only think of only one other song that has that affect on me and that is "The living years" Mike and the mechanics and I'm sure you know the line.

Thanks Gary and Guy, that was an an awesome chat with Gilbert. Btw Gary, loved that you referred to Gilbert by his chosen name Raymond. Gilbert is a reflection of the place he was born in. We are so proud of him and he is so loved and appreciated in Waterford. There's a reason we are called the gentle county and he is the epitome of that - so humble, self deprecating and understated. I think I was about 9 years of age when I heard Nothing Rhymed for the first time. Originally it was the melody that caught my attention but now as a 62 year old I still listen to this song everyday. His lyrics are the stuff of genius, expecially in someone so young, no matter how he tries to underplay them. Thanks so much Raymond for shining a light into my childhood and teenage years. Ireland was a dark place back then. Btw, Gary were you a patron of Peter's pub in Dublin in the 80s, I have vague recollections of running into you and your brother there 🙈 . Love what you two are doing, it's such an education to listen to you. Keep up the good work.

This Gentleman was a BRILLIANT songwriter….Excellent chord sequences and melodies, really catchy and original. And a very individual sounding voice. Instantly recognisable. How with his talent he didn’t become as big as Elton John is beyond me…And the lyrics were equally unforgettable…My mind goes back to the early 1970s and I still remember them instantly….’Told you once before and I won’t tell you no more so get down, get down, get down…You’re a bad dog baby, but I still want you around….Once upon a time I drank a little wine, was as happy as can be, happy as can be,,,now I’m just like a cat on a hot tin roof, baby what do you think you’re doing to me’ (repeat)…..and as I remember those lyrics I can hear the melody in my head after all these years as clearly as a lighthouse beacon on a cloudless night. Great days. (Paul)

About 5 years ago Steve Wright in the Afternoon played Nothing Rhymed & it stopped me & could’ve stopped the show in its tracks whilst everyone whom had ears was hearing something shoulders above & beyond the usual modern age generic back beat , urban warbling or shiny tuneless dross or the same old tunes from the 1970s or 1980s which he generally played . The song just shined out with its strong melody & made you listen & maybe even find yourself reflecting on Gilberts’ message. Wright thankfully played the song in its entirety bless him or his producer. It made hanging radiators a lot more enjoyable & I’ve blasted it out across the garden since for our neighbours to appreciate or be reminded of its existence. Quality 😃👍❤️🍒

I think Gary put it politely about Ray's style about the structure of what is underneath his words if you listen to the piano what drives his songs it is very basic root note keeping the tempo with single stab chords it is very effective the lyrics and the hook are just unforgettable this is what makes the likes of O'sullivan a master of what he does
@Khayyam-vg9fw2 ай бұрын
True, but there's also a lot of harmonic subtlety in the songs. Quite apart from that, the lyrics are staggeringly accomplished.

We all miss Herbie Flowers bless him. Great session bassist on so many great records and artists. He was a tuba player too. In 1979 I saw him in concert at the Congress Theatre in Eastbourne with the band SKY (with John Williams, Kevin Peek, Francis Monkman and Tristan Fry.) I remember Herbie would talk to us in the audience like a stand up comedian between songs with jokes saying stuff like -‘ we’ve all got it easy up here, all we have to do is mime to the tape’ ..lol …… great memories of a great session player. With Gilbert's big hit ballads, much kudos must go to the arrangements and tonal palette (harmonica in Clair, nylon string guitar in 'Alone again' ... also the sumptuous Johnny Spence string arrangements. A quick search on 'whatever happened to' : Johnny Spence ... he apparently died suddenly at home in Los Angeles of a heart attack on 15 August 1977, at the age of 41.

I wonder if Ray (Gilbert) knows my father, a Waterford man too, known as Paddy O'Sullivan (Patrick), from a band my dad was part of called 'The Broadsiders' - They Irish charted in 1967 reaching about 7 in the charts, the song was called 'The Shores of Amerikay' produced by Johnny McEvoy, of course in those days and in Ireland if you reached the top ten you would remain there for over 6 months :) bless.. so my fathers band played around all Ireland with big Irish known other bands.. my father since I was a young budding musician often talked about Gilbert (Ray)... and of course Val Doonican as my father was friends with his younger brother, good show, very enjoyed Cx

Yes - anyone that’s made something which most of the older population in GOS’ case are familiar with or enjoy immensely should at least be granted that type of recognition. The only super star musicians near us are 2 neighbours on the Solent coastline but no one would see any plaque because they’re at the end of a 2mile gravel road ! ( they aren’t our neighbours- we’re 7 miles away from the very wealthy )🙄😃👍❤️🍒

(Downstream by Supertramp should be better known . What a beautiful tune. I was amazed to read somewhere that it was composed by Roger Hodgson & not Rick Davies because it along with From Now On or Bloody Well Right etc just doesn’t sound like Hodgsons’ more poppy &/or philosophical style. I am now wondering if this song was actually one of Gilbert / Rays’ melodies at least - having just learnt he’d hung out with Davies)
