I love how Gilbert's voice has developed since the original version. It's not grown old or fragile, it's just wiser.

I just rediscovered this wonderful song from my youth. Such a beautiful melody, juxtaposed upon the sad truth of loss in the lyrics. Thank you Gilbert O'Sullivan! It brought me back to the old days before digital music and the internet. But then I downloaded the sheet music, transposed to the key of C, so I can try to sing it myself for fun.

I remember this in 1971. I was 13. My bedroom walls were plastered with newspaper pictures of the man. I never lost faith. His style is distinctive and unique, he's a wordsmith and stayed true to himself. I look forward to the next gig.

@@Phantom1963My father died around the time this song came out. I was just 6. It was my first time dealing with the reality of the death of the people that fill your world. I remember the first day back to school, and being scared when the teacher announced to the class what had happened. I figured I would get picked on. But no other child in my class ever said a word. I guessed, at the time, the idea of losing a parent was as scary to them as reality was to me. Anyway, this song always takes me to that time, and brings out feelings like no other song does for me. This is the first time I have ever shared this with others, and the first time I have heard anything but the original recording.

I believed lies about getting "older." I grew up in the 60's hearing "Never trust anyone over 30." Youth was good, older was bad. We don't call older people “elders” much, we call them "elderly." Sounds bad to me. I talked myself into feeling bad about life. I compared and judged. I am really working hard to stop this nonsense. Thanks Gilbert! You are great! Proof that older is great too.

FUN FACT Although the description emphasizes that this is the first re-recording of Alone Again since 1971, in reality this information is not entirely correct. And this is because in 1992 a re-recorded version for Japan called "Alone Again Present Version" was released and in fact it can be found here on KZbin.

In a little while from now If I'm not feeling any less sour I promise myself to treat myself And visit a nearby tower And climbing to the top Will throw myself off In an effort to make clear to whomever What it's like when you're shattered Left standing in the lurch At a church where people saying My God, that's tough, she stood him up No point in us remaining We may as well go home As I did on my own Alone again, naturally To think that only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay Looking forward to, well, who wouldn't do The role I was about to play But as if to knock me down Reality came around And without so much as a mere touch Cut me into little pieces Leaving me to doubt Talk about God in His mercy Who, if He really does exist Why did He desert me? And in my hour of need I truly am, indeed Alone again, naturally It seems to me that there are more hearts Broken in the world that can't be mended Left unattended What do we do? What do we do? Alone again, naturally Now, looking back over the years And whatever else that appears I remember I cried when my father died Never wishing to hide the tears And at sixty-five years old My mother, God rest her soul Couldn't understand why the only man She had ever loved had been taken Leaving her to start With a heart so badly broken Despite encouragement from me No words were ever spoken And when she passed away I cried and cried all day Alone again, naturally Alone again, naturally
