I worked at Tower Records in Westwood in the 1980s. Gilda came in to get cassette tapes to record herself for her upcoming book. She was wearing a turban and looked beautiful. She seemed really confused and nervous. She was clearly ill. Made me really sad.

I remember the Saturday morning when the news came over the radio. I bowed my head and cried. She had just been on Gary Shandling's show and looked so vibrant and healthy and she had just finished recording the audio for her book. It broke my heart so badly. I always take a moment. As much as I loved Gilda, I had a crush on Gene. Oh, I can't describe what it was that captured my (then) three-year-old heart, but I was smitten with Willy Wonka. So, when that September day in 84 came and Gilda stole him from me (wink!), I didn't say her name for a whole year. But, oh, they made a beautiful couple.

At one point Gilda was married to a guy here in Toronto and was working for the board of education doing short plays in schools to get people interested in the arts. I also visited her and the cast of Godspell. “Let’s have some win” she was poring grape juice for people and I helped. Remembered the whole gang. Did not know it was her until her death. Toronto Star did three pages and I rushed to find the program with all the autographs. There she was !

The saddest part is she wanted to have kids with Gene and instead of pregnancy she got cancer. Makes me so mad and sad for her at the same time. And I remember reading an interview with Gene a few years later after Gilda died that the reason he didn't break down and cry or say goodbye was he in his words "naively" thought she honestly would survive it even until the end

Scott, I’m originally from Grosse Pointe Michigan. (...I know, wealthy rich white people central is usually what comes to mind) but it’s an absolutely beautiful place. People always think Detroit and what comes to mind is a shit hole but there are some lovely places. My uncle went to school with Gilda and I recognize these houses well! One of my other uncles lived near her childhood home. EDIT: When that sleeveless cop popped up I laughed my head off.

Gilda was my favorite on SNL. I bought her 'Live From New York' vinyl album in 1979. I don't think my mother knew what was really on it until I asked her (in the presence of her friend) "what's a snatch?" at the innocent age of 10. All I remember was my mom's friend losing it with laughter. 40 years later I think back to that time and it makes me smile. I still have my Gilda's Club tie I bought as an adult.

I did not know Gilda grew up in Detroit. This looks like the area my friend lived in. A ways from Southfield, but I had a lot of friends in the city of Detroit because I volunteered there for KDB Teens. I hung out Downtown every weekend & was lucky to have lunch at Big Boy on Saturday’s across from Hudson’s. I understand Hudson’s is gone, but the had the most beautiful Christmas village when I was a kid. My school had a trip to see Santa there one year. It was just magical. When I was a teen the steamed chestnuts were the best. I heard Gene was never the same after Gilds died. You were so lucky to have met him Scott. Some of us met the rock stars others are destined to meet other great talent. I think you are luckier.

Thank you for doing this, I loved Gilda she made me laugh, her and gene made a cute couple..as a child I loved watching her.sad she died so young. I feel she still had so much to give. She was very talented. Didn't understand why gene married just 2years after her death. Maybe he was lonely, didn't want to live alone. As for me I could never live in a home where my husband deceased wife lived. I'm sure Gilda at peace. Now with gene gone.. I'm so glad he wanted other women to know about ovarian cancer, its not just a young women disease. I've know women in their 80s die from this very painful disease.. Women don't let people tell you not just over I an cancer but also, breast, urethane cancer can start in your late teens I know it runs in family. On my mothers father side breast cancer was hereditary a cousin in her 30s suffered, she was only 44 when she passed. Her mother had double mastectomy. She's in her late 80s now but her mother got breast cancer in her 80s. Few of the sisters, one of the daughters died young. I also had it seen polyp. Thankfully good Dr removed it, it wasn't cancer. I was in lot pain. When you know your body don't feel right go see about yourself.. If it runs in your family whether its ovarian, breast, or other cancer. Don't wait.with today's technology. You can beat it. Thank God that Gene wilder was not ashamed to talk about this. Love and positivity, n.j.:-)

Gilda told him to. She told him that she wanted him to be happy. And I think Gilda subconsciously knew that Karen would treat him well--and she did. Gene didn't go into his third marriage with blinders, and when he and Karen tied the knot, his and Gilda's dog daughter Sparkle, was there to give him away.
