One thing that always annoyed me about the films is that they never really touch on the truth about lockhart. He's actually extremely intelligent. He's bewitched many supremely talented wizard and witches, was said to be a master of memory charms and conned the entire wizarding world (including dumbledore himself). He was even a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts. His entire "bumbling idiot" thing was just an act in the books, something the films never touch on.

When Ron told him that Lockhart obliviated itself, Dumbledore said something like: "Oh dear, impaled upon your own sword, Gilderoy?", meaning that he knew that he was a fraud and obliviated people to claim their archivements.
