So true. Much of modernist and postmodernist fiction seems overwhelmingly pessimistic. What do we do when we meet genuine enthusiasm and optimism? We ridicule the superficiality and the lack of knowledge.

Thank you for checking out this video. I like your idea of planning for the whole series - I’d love to join you there. Something to keep in mind is that even if these are slim novels, they need to be read slowly (at least that was the case with Gilead for me).

This has been on my TBR for so long, I'm ashamed! ...might have to make it an express priority. :-) thanks, Tom!

I am looking forward to reading it during Maybe Midrash that I am starting today. Not a big fan of plot-driven books in general, so this one seems made for me. Great review!

I read this book earlier this year and have just finished Home . I found Gilead very moving although I too found Ames to be a frustrating companion and loved the arrival of Jack... The grandpa was so like John Brown and she showed brilliantly the immediate attraction of radicalism , it's strengths and weaknesses ..... I love the way Robinson explored how the particular congregational and Calvinist beliefs prevelant in Iowa at this time allowed humans to be their better selves even as they feel they and their faith fails . Home is also fantastic , sibling relationship being the main anchor, how we find and need sanctuary and how hard it is to accept our shortcomings .

@@hesterdunlop7948 Thanks Hester. I have Home in my “wish list”, and anything else that she wrote, really! I also hear that her more recent “Jack” is very good.

It’s one of the novels published this century which will still be read and treasured 100 years from now.

@@tomlabooks3263 I am glad to have finally checked out your channel. I’ve heard it mentioned multiple times, but always in relation to Dante, and since I’ve still never read The Divine Comedy, I assumed there’d be nothing for me to watch. This video on Gilead was reason enough to subscribe. Booktube needs more genuine, laid back, thoughtful voices like yours.

@@OldBluesChapterandVerse Thanks so much, this means a real lot to me! Booktube is a fairly recent discovery for me and probably the best thing I’ve discovered in 2020. I only wish I had a bit more time to watch everyone’s videos and interact more with people because there are so many booktubers with fascinating perspectives and great book reviews like you and your lovely wife. Recently I admit I’ve had to stop subscribing to channels because it was getting out of hand! 😄 Chat soon 👍🏻🙏🏻
