I loved this book (it’s so calming and gentle and melancholy and hauntingly beautiful) and I hope we get a movie of it. Daniel Day Lewis would be my pick to play the priest protagonist, he is capable of doing quieter-but just as at times intense-parts, though he’s retired (I hope he comes out of retirement). And Robinson is a very gifted writer: she manages to put in religion without overwhelming people.

Hi. I just finished reading Gilead and stumbled upon your channel. Thanks for a thoughtful review and for the terrific links. I’ve just begun Tolentino’s book and I see you’ve just posted a review of that! Looking forward to watching.

Thank you so much! I hope you enjoyed both as much as I did. I'm glad you liked the Gilead review, I really thought that one was particularly special.

I had Gilead on my shelves for ages and had started it and had to put it down; life. I picked it up and finished it last month and I'm so glad! I wouldn't have appreciated it as much if I had read it then. When I first started it, it was just one book, now there are three. I bought the other two and plan on reading them this year. Great review!

Very well crafted book. Robinson's way with words is worthy of a Pulitzer. Her ruminations on theology and faith, however, are exactly what C.S. Lews would have called "Christianity and Water."

Also an atheist and was not sure I wanted to read this book but, wow, you gave such a thought provoking and wonderful review I am looking forward to reading it now. You had me totally at the Nina Simone song. Thanks - subscribed! Fantastic review. Can't wait to read more of your reviews.

I know of a non-traditional book that's highly thoughtful for you to review ;) Also, there is a good documentary on Nina Simone out. I've listened through her entire discography recently.

I just finished reading this today. I had read somewhere that even atheists liked this book, which surprised and intrigued me, so I was happy to find your lovely and eloquent review. Have you read the 3 sequels, Home, Lila and Jack - the same story from 3 other perspectives. I will read them sometime.

I suspect it is because of the very light-handedness Robinson shows to Atheists, Edward in particular. His lack of belief leads him to a good life on the Gulf Coast. Is this the experience of Atheists on the whole? Does rejecting Joy and its source have so little consequence?
