This was fantastic, and not for the reason I thought. It was great to see the breakdown in longterm goals, with regards to scaling, and how that played into DAT & ITS load boards. Inconsistent revenue isn’t talked about enough, when it comes to being a DAT player. Markets flip and plenty of owner ops go under. It happened, big time, in 2020. You HAVE to have a strategy. Whether that’s a direct shipper OR broker partnership - there has to be a plan. The market is brutal and can turn on a dime.

He favors the later, since he knows that is a constant and in his business, he can manage the cost. 😂 I have been a truck driver for 8 yrs . I think your a little full of it. That would be great most direct shippers are looking for large carriers . One doubt that I don’t really think was answered, in this video. I have been a broker my self for 6-7 years (Have my company) I have my own customers with my brokerage and this takes me to the next step my doubt, I also just opened up my trucking company about a year ago, so to get direct shipper loads you need to start with load boards until you can really offer a shipper or direct client a service that requires a truck fleet not only 2-3-4 trucks do you agree or what do you think, and/or how many trucks do you think is enough for my trucking company get/jump to the next level ??
@Gill222 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. One truck is not enough to get direct shipper loads. You need a fleet of at the very least 10 trucks before you pursue direct shipper loads imo
@davidlandii1212 жыл бұрын
What sort of incentives are you referring to when discussing contracting with a compàny for loads?
@Gill222 жыл бұрын
The biggest is consistency of rates and fuel surcharge payments. It reduces variability which is needed if you want to run a fleet or trucks and not just a few trucks.

It’s a skilled job with high demand and low supply. Therefore you don’t need to distinguish yourself Comparing drivers to wheat is some presumptuous shit.
@Gill222 жыл бұрын
No one is comparing drivers to wheat. The service itself is very much commoditized among small carriers. Also, there isn't a high demand/low supply issue at all... in fact... it's the complete opposite (which explains the tanking spot rates). If you would like to have a honest discussion without strawmanning my arguments, I would be more than happy to.

when you offer low rates to direct shippers at first, Is it simply to get you name basically in their bubble? then as you work more you get to up it?
@Gill223 жыл бұрын
i provide them with service packages at a competitive rate, not at “low” rates. The whole point of going direct with a shipper is to make more money on a consistent stream. If you don’t think you can provide additional products/services that a shipper would value, then yes, definitely consider underbidding the spot market on a trial basis and then discuss the possibility of signing a long term contract!

@Gill223 жыл бұрын
No one is telling you to stop all load board usage. I thought I made it pretty clear that the point of the video was to teach people the fundamental reason WHY they need to move from a primarily spot rate to contract rate and the benefits that come along with that. Even big companies have to use load boards to cover some deadhead or return shipments so I wouldn't make that argument. Before leaving a sarcastic comment, make sure you actually understand the contents of the video Mr. Sanjurjo.

I thought it was basic common sense. Why would a company pay a middle man that has no trucks to transport their goods? They pay broker's because they know nothing about their transportation and would rather pay someone to take care of that issue for them. They may never even see the face of their broker, but they leave that responsibility to them. That's what they pay them to do. "Take care of our transportation for us because we have to focus on our store/company/business. We can't be bothered with finding employee's, trucks, and fix maintenance issues. Thats a whole another department that we know nothing about" It's pretty common sense why a company would use a middle man instead of directly hiring a one man person. Broker will find someone else to fill in the gaps if someone quits. Imagine if the person quits; the company will have no products/goods. Can't really stand around and be twiddling their thumbs
