This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on the 20th Century French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze's "Bartleby, Or The Formula", found in his Essays Critical and Clinical. Deleuze's essay examines Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby The Scrivner". This lecture focuses specifically on Deleuze's discussion of Pragmatism as a distinctively American (but not stereotypically American) perspective. He ties his notion of Pragmatism not just to philosophy but also to literature, and reads it back into Trancendentalists
