***** please! The British accent she'd acquired from living in the UK from ages 2-11 had long dissipated by the time of this interview. She was born in Chicago, then moved to the UK, and then returned to the US at age 11, where she mainly grew up and attended college. She was mainly based in the US during her early career. She didn't relocate to England until after THE X-FILES ended in 2002, when she was 34. There's no way her British accent would've lain dormant for over 30 years. It's a put-on these days.

Are you a lenguist? I doubt it. Accents do lay dormant and they do come back. My dad is British and has lived in the US for 25 years. In that time, his accent has faded. When he's around other brits though, it comes back full force. Also, do you really think that gillian anderson would put on a fake accent? Come on.

+musicaltheatergeek79 she's actually said herself in past interviews that she had to really try and it took her years to gain an American accent ...if I'm not mistaken she said she finally gained her american accent by the time she was sixteen. till this day she says that it's very difficult for her not to slip back into her British accent and if you pay attention in this interview you can clearly see when she corrects herself.

Interesting. Her being in England for this interview is bringing out her native English accent. Nowadays she doesn't hide it with in the UK, but in the '90s I guess she didn't want to confuse people. (If you didn't know, she was raised in England and that's her more natural accent. When she returned to the US, she adopted a more American accent, which is what she's mostly speaking here, though it slips sometimes in this interview. Watch 'The Fall' or her UK convention appearances to hear her English accent).

I think Steve Wright's funny, quirky interview style was later copied by Jonathan Ross. To tell Gillian Anderson that he has lost interest in the interview was something that - I think - interviewers before Wright wouldn't have dared to say - even as a joke.

Wow, so many more interview shows I'll have to watch... I would have said "compared to then, today there is too much diplomacy or, even worse, scripting going on in shows like this". But that's just a first impression. It would be interesting to compare shows from different decades and across the continent, say, Mediterranean where I live. Italians have diplomacy built-in in the language (folks from France ofc are calling "hold my beer" ), at least that was my impression from 30 years ago. Anyway, yes, "frankly, we lost interest" is now sending me on a bingesearchwatch spree :D

I must admit I thought the quality of the interview was poor when it was originally broadcast. Gillian was being interviewed at the height of the X-Files’ popularity and I felt it deserved better.

Yes, from today's viewpoint(s) with all the diplomacy and scripting and political correctness going on (my wife was shouting "stop it already" more than once when i ranted on the fly to my 11yo son with something like "you'll see when you have a girlfriend in about 3-6 years" and then correct myself, apologizing, "sorry, or boyfriend, or partner, or being, or ifhanderslumtchmizz whatever", duh). Mr Wright would be able to explain his words if confronted, and Ms. Anderson is/was definitely exposed to much harder challenges, then or now, or before then.
