Gillian Welch and David Rawlings perform this lovely waltz which they co-wrote. It is also known as "Dear Someone". They are accompanied by John Hartford on fiddle and Mike Compton on the mandolin. The event is the "Down From The Mountain" concert at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on May 24, 2000. The event was a celebration of traditional American music and a rollout of sorts for the Coen Brothers film "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"
Enjoy.

...the most perfect love story put to music...the way Gillian looks at David...the inflections of their voices...in my mind I'm waltzing with the love of my life, who I never met, to a song I thought I would never hear...oh, god - what a song...

Love that fiddle stepping up while Dave's guitar steps down (1:33-1:35)! John had quite a lot to do with the show. He left the stage after this song while Gillian and Dave went on to play "I Want to Sing That Rock 'n' Roll" which is also brilliant. The mandolin embellishments are the cherry on top.

Anyone notice that everyone's about a half step, sharp? I think this video is from an analog source with a playback speed issue. There would have been no reason for Compton and Hartford to tune sharp...

Yes, it's clear from Gillian's fretboard that that she's playing in Eb (C-shape tonic at the 3rd fret) like on the album, but the audio sounds in E major.

She has her capo on 3 and she is playing C G and an occasional F in there but she hangs on C and G mostly. She is playing it in the key of D with chords shapes of C. I don't know how that works for piano but if you know those chords on piano I bet you could figure it out! Just 1 4 5 in the key of D. (D G A )Good luck and have fun!
