Transfer portal is the reason why we see 15 seeds winning the past two years when they only won 10 times total in history, why we see a 16 seed beating a 1 seed for just the second time in history, why some of the last/lowest rated teams in the tourney getting more wins than they ever did, and why 11 of the 16 sweet 16 teams are represented by 11 different conferences. it has evened the playing field and gives more parity between big and small conference teams. Also has made the teams with a starting 5 of all top ranked freshman less effective.

From a pure college basketball fans perspective, the transfer portal will create much greater parity. So for all the 3 or 4 star players that couldn't make it at UNC and Duke, now he'll be at your FAU or Oral Roberts of the world. And you will have teams full of 21-23 year olds with chip on their shoulder at mid majors going up against blue bloods. Will only create more upsets and more march madness.

One year renewables are tough, I always think about a situation like Kevin Ware where he snapped his leg. Everything looks good, got a scholarship etc, then you get injured and that's out the window. If they're going to offer a scholarship it should be guaranteed as long as you're playing basketball, with the exception of injuries that ruin your ability to play. Since obviously you can't guarantee a scholarship to the college version of ben simmons, a guy who just decides he doesn't feel like playing anymore

I think you're right to a certain extent but Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, and UCLA are still going to get the best players. The thing is, if they get there and feel slighted by not getting enough minutes or say they can't handle the situation, they bolt for another school. But in the end, those schools will still win because of their fan bases and their coaches. It just might not be as dominant as in years past. This season has been just one of those crazy moments in history. I thought at the start of the season that there was maybe 30 teams with a shot to win the title.
@YungBK_

@@jkckmarcumful those teams aren’t really losing anything. Those players will get the the majority of better NIL deals, those schools (especially Duke) have better practicing facilities as well extra draft Intel especially if you go to Duke or Kentucky because a lot of those guys are GMs like Billy King, Trajan Langdon, Mike Dunleavy. The transfer rate from those schools and rate at which they get players aren’t going to change, if anything you may see these schools get an increase in transfers. All you said may be true. But I like the fact that the panel brought up the other side of the portal. Players going into it are taking a risk; that they might not land where they want, because a coach might see a "better" player, putting you out there, "in limbo," as they noted. The risks and unintended consequences were never talked about when the portal concept came up.

HS Senior HS Seniors if you do not have an offer by your 2nd Semester…Go JUCO…if you work hard and win at that level you will play D1 or D2 NAIA. HS Seniors if you do have an offer stop playing and ACCEPT IT. If a “better” school was going to offer they would’ve already. Think of this whole recruiting process like Dating.

Plus, the WNBA pays less than what she makes now. That’s how talent ought to pay. This whole conversation is exclusive to men. It’s also poorly informed and highly fear based about a future that none of ya’ll are entering.

The portal has created parity right now.... but with time, big boys will learn how to leverage it to get the most success out of it. My guess is, you will get a mix of some one and done starters, guys that were stars at smaller schools and some graduate seniors that want to ride coat tails to get some silverware.

It's crazy to think that Gilbert Arenas didn't know this but yes all college contracts aka. scholarships including athletic scholarships are year to year. This has always been the case at least since the 90's. The head coach has absolute control over athletic scholarships unlike other type of academic scholarships that intrust a scholarship board of trustees to determine the outcome of an academic student being released from their scholarship. Before the NIL and transfer portal athletes would not only have to sit out a year or if they transferred to a school in the same division level but they would also lose a year of eligibility. The changes with the NIL and Portal that are going on now I think are the first steps to creating a NCAA player union to protect the integrity of collegiate scholarship athletes. We can no longer pretend that college sports are amateur and we have to embrace the reality that NCAA sports are semi pro, a development league for the NFL. My prediction is that universities will reimplement JV leagues as they had in the past and NCAA will allow universities to add 15 to 25 JV development or redshirt scholarships for highschool students.

I am happy for NIL because the NCAA has been operating a multi billion dollar business without giving back to the EMPLOYEE which is the players. And make no mistake it is a JOB they been the NBA minor LEAGUES and it bout time they can get paid. The colleges have no loyalty to the players

It's not only the transfer portal but it is the draft. The drafts are watered down after the top 5 or 6 picks. Players that play more than a year or two in college are viewed as too old, which is ridiculous. This attitude would change overnight if NBA scouts decided to stop their foolishness and fairly assess juniors and seniors as well. Look at Caleb Houston. His numbers were underwhelming on every level in college. Yet he was drafted when he desperately needed another year or two of development on the collegiate level. The NBA draft and the transfer portal are both harming basketball.

I think it's a double edged sword......on one hand yeah, You might get pushed out of a Major program and bounce around trying to find your perfect fit, but on the other hand You transfer to a Mid-Major and complete destroy your competition and raise your and the programs profile and maybe you get them in the Tourny or the NIT! Now you're Ja Morant or Steph Curry!

The transfer portal has allowed for flexibility on both sides, it doesn’t necessarily even the playing field. Nor does it allow for the NBA like movement Gilbert is describing. A few top tier NBA prospects may have more flexibility with their situation due to what they bring to a team. The vast majority will be treated as regular players. Meaning colleges are looking for players that will assist with building the legacy of the university. Alumni want to see the growth of their old stomping grounds. As mentioned, a few great young talents will be able to get away with more. But like Gil said universities won’t have to wait on majority of player’s decisions. Colleges don’t want disloyal employees. They want students athletes committed to the growth of themselves and the organization. How long before a student athlete’s participation in the transfer portal comes with the stigma of a disloyal player or “an NCAA tournament chaser”? How long before appearing in the transfer portal blackballs student athletes from their respective sports? If major conferences withheld scholarships/opportunities from student athletes that have transfer portal history then the whole thing would come to an abrupt halt, and revert back to old ways of recruiting. Please stop trying to convince student athletes that the portal allows them the flexibility of the 2011 Miami Heat. 17-22 is still a very impressionable for a person.

Just like the NBA game has radically changed to be a bunch of 3pt shooters chucking around 1-2 ball handlers, the college game has radically changed with the transfer portal. You don’t have to like it, but programs need to adapt or fall behind. Hell, the whole reason for the portal being a thing is the NCAA was ARTIFICIALLY restricting players from profiting from their likeness, prevented them from even having a paying part-time job, and prevented them from changing schools unless they gave up a year of eligibility. All that shit is ILLEGAL in the real world- you would never stand for it and take their ass to court. Nobody works for only benefits; everyone gets cold hard cash for their work. Benefits like health insurance, 401k, etc are part of compensation, but nobody confuses any of that for what your wages are. College athletes, for some bizarre reason, existed in this false bubble while coaches, programs and conferences became ultra-rich on their backs. The great irony of it all is the NCAA and its member schools don’t pay a single penny for NIL deals! They get to selfishly keep everything they earn from media contracts, corporate sponsorships, all that. But at least now players can make some dough elsewhere, and it doesn’t have to be under the table any more. Maybe that’s why the bluebloods are so upset, because it gives everyone a slightly more level playing field….

NIL has destroyed college basketball one of the reason u see guys like Boeheim , Coach K , Roy Williams etc finally decide to retire they got out before it got started they knew where the game was heading coaches like Calipari and others have tarnished the recruiting process along w the NIL money the transfer portal it created a level playing field w mid majors and power 5 schools and there are really good coaches all over basketball if anything the coaches win because the hottest coach at a major gets recruited for the power 5 open jobs

Gil is the shit I played under for his AAU coach Icart and Icart hyped him up everyday in practice this was during the Kobe/Wade Era and I knew Gil was an explosive scorer but hearing his intellect in how he breaks down the game and understands the nuisances of the game from a business and coaching perspective brings it all together now.

I love the transfer portal. The people who are mad about it are mad that the blue bloods are having a harder time competing since they can’t recruit all the top talent and have “should be starters” sitting in the bench hogging all the talent. This is way we see 16 seeds beating 1 seeding etc now. I love it. Evens the playing field for all school

Gil is talking like it’s only 32 college teams for these players lol. If I’m at Duke and a player at my position transfer and I go to Michigan(like his example) then that just shows the coaches and league that I’m not that good or confident to keep my spot.
