I love Bridlington. I'm 64 now. I fell in love with Bridlington at about the age of 6 when our parents took me, my twin brother and my older brother from Hull - where we lived - to Bridlington for a week's holiday. We stayed in a caravan at Limekiln Lane Caravan park, just off the North Beach Promenade. We stayed there Year after year, always staying on that Caravan park. My and my twin brother used to love it when we could hear a passenger train coming on the Hull - Scarborough line. It would travel along the track that ran alongside and over the overhead bridge sited just outside the camp. Our family liked Scarborough, but always preferred Bridlington as it was not so hilly and everything - town, promenade, beach - was one one level. Does anyone remember the Fun City Amusement Hall that used to stand on the North Beach between the Expanse Hotel and the Brid Bay fish n chip shop ? It was me and my twin brother's favourite place to visit as a kid. It's not there any more. Oh I miss that place. Inside there was me and my twin brother's favourite gaming machine. I think it was called Lucky Stars. It was a machine with a kind of roulette wheel divided into segments. Each segment featured a picture of a famous movie star. When the machine was ready to play you would put a threepenny bit - YES a threepenny bit, it paid out in threepenny bits LOL - into the segment of your chosen movie star. The central roulette wheel would rotate. When it stopped, you either won nothing/3d/6d/9d or ONE SHILLING, depending on what inner wheel segment landed at you movie star 'station'. For some reason, me and my brother loved that machine. Even at the age of about 7 I was always drawn to the segment dedicated to actress Pier Angeli. I don't know why ... maybe she sounded exotic and mysterious and ... foreign LOL Very very happy memories. I still live in Hull and love visiting Bridlington !

Fabulous video. Even tho Brid has changed greatly since I was last there in the late Sixties, I remember the Harbour well, loved going out on the boats for trips out sea around Flamborough Head. Many people from my hometown, Sheffield, used to go to Brid on day trips and of course longer holidays especially during the " Works Weeks ". Loved to swim in the sea even though it was, to say the least, a tad chilly. Your video has inspired me to return soon.

Coming from Hull, Bridlington was always a popular 'weekend day out' venue right from my childhood. Family trips with my parents were frequent and then as a teenager, trips with friends were something I'd make right through summer. (I remember as a teenager, there was that 'dull' hour from 5pm until 6pm, between the shops closing and the pubs opening, but this was an ideal time to explore the old town.) Whenever we took our own kids for a day out, Bridlington was always the first choice, being only 40 minutes or so away by train, but now our kids are all grown up and we're getting on a bit, visits to the seaside aren't a priority to us anymore, and it's now 18 years since we last went. Some things never change though: Arnolds Fisheries on the corner of Bridge Street & Queen Street looks the same now as it did back in 1960s when I was a lad, and it's great to see that Topham's Ice Cream parlour is still there, (though I'm not sure if they'll still be selling their 'Famous Lemon Top' ice cream cones!) A favourite with our kids was Notarianni's coffee shop & ice cream parlour (opposite the John Bull rock shop) where my wife would enjoy a coffee topped with whipped cream, while the kids had either a knickerbocker glory or one of the other ice cream sundae choices; (I still remember the mess they could make as toddlers when confronted with a banana split! - a three year old's logic says that if you don't like green jelly, then obviously you just remove it and place it on the table next to your plate!!) The harbour was a favourite place to eat lunch. There was something special about eating your fish and chips from a tray with a stupidly pointless wooden fork, while sitting by the harbour, watching the old fishing boats and sparring with the gulls who would never desist from trying to steal your lunch. Follow that with a waffle with jam & cream or a big bag of freshly cooked doughnuts, and where else could compete for a superb seaside meal? it would be enough to keep me happy until teatime, unless of course we later walked back down to the south beach, (where mussels, cockles or whelks from either Arnolds or Taste O' The Sea would keep me happy!) Of course the other options were to spend time on the sands at the north beach, (though the kids would always seem to get bored and want to move on, just after we'd forked out for an afternoon's deckchair hire,) or walk up to the very north end of the beach and then take the 'road train' to Sewerby Park to visit the wallabies and llamas, (and for some reason the kids always enjoyed a donkey ride on the grass there, having never showed any interest in similar on the sands!)

My brother-in-law had a job with East Yorkshire County Council, (then: North Wolds Borough Council,) for a while, and him, my sister & their daughters lived in Brid (on the old West Hill estate,) for a couple of years, so my nieces are much more familiar with it than my kids, (and even than my wife & I) are. Over that time, we obviously visited Brid more often (in season and out of season,) but I don't remember ever visiting the seafront/harbour area during any of those visits.

Sadly the town looks better on this video than it does in reality. like a lot of British seaside towns, its struggling. There are no quality shops anymore, lots of empty properties, there is no industry to keep young people in the area. Road access is an issue for business, the nearest Motorway is almost 40 miles away at Howden or west of Hull, both can take well over an hour to get to the town at times. Its very sad how the town has declined. I was born in Bridlington, but moved away over 30 years ago. I still have friends and family in the area. There is very little that would tempt me to move back to the town and thats quite sad.

Fond memories in this blog!! As a boy we used to stay in Hilderthorpe Road in an 'apartment' type lodgings in the early 50's. So just in ration days, lol, parents bought the food and landlady cooked it each time. You had to provide your own condiments too!!!!! Landlady provided a large jug of hot water to use in room sink to wash us all in the mornings, I think a bath a week was allowed!!! A special treat was going to one of the cafes for cooked tea and at a popular one there was an illuminated contraption showing what seating size of table was free before the waitress took you a table. I think you had to be out the room by 10am and not allowed back before 6pm. How times have changed, for the better? It was just before cars were freely available to buy so it was coach trip from home town, no day tripping then! Oh and trip around the bay on the steamers Yorkshireman and Bridlington Belle. All now seen through rose tinted glasses!

I used to go here every year with my sister and grandma. It was glorious and so much fun. I went in the 70s and early 80s when they had crazy golf, beach front gardens, lots of beautiful sea front shops near the harbour and plenty for kids like slides trampolines and radio controlled boats. There was also a helicopter ride for like £25 and donkey rides. We stayed with a family friend who lived about a mile inland and we always went to the tunnel on the beach as our landmark to set up. Never had such wonderful holidays as back then. We would always set up on the beach even if it was inclement weather, yes even if it was raining cause we used to build a roof over head out of deckchairs. I want to go back sometime soon but obviously so much has changed. The woman we stayed with Pauline had a beautiful daughter called Jackie who I would love to meet again if she still lives in this area.

Bridlington is gorgeous I live here and I’ve got to say I can’t really think of anywhere better to be in the summer it’s always booming on the beach and most people in the town are lovely. You get a few exceptions, but that’s the same everywhere. But overall you can’t beat sunny brid

I was seeing someone from Brid in 2016/17 Hi Jayne, I used to make the drive up From Essex most weekends, it really is a nice place with friendly people well worth a visit with some great fish & chip shops I can highly recommend 149 Fish & chips near the old town of Brid this is where I discovered Chip spice and Brid was also one of the places where the new Dad's Army was filmed.
@GimbalWalkTV4 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I am filming the streets where Dad's Army was filmed as I love that location. Thought the film could have been a bit better in terms of storyline though!

What a lovely place. Definitely have to pay a visit. Could you do a video of Great Yarmouth? 👍

I have a caravan here. For a chippy I would highly recommend Fish and chips at 149 (which is on the top side of Bridlington). Also Danes Dyke nature reserve and Filey beach are really close by!

Good call on the chippy

Gimbal Walk TV We very often go to Busy Bees, on the Main Street opposite the Premier Inn. Nice chippy. Yes we've tried Fish n Chips @ 149. Good, but we think it's slightly overrated. We've just discovered Queensgate Fisheries opposite Bridlington Town FC football ground, and we actually think it's the best of the lot ... it's pretty cheap too LOL

@@GimbalWalkTV I want to go back and see how it has changed. Some of my happiest memories were at Brid. I loved the Harbour and all the sea shell shops and cafetaterias. I remember all the rude postcards that I was allowed to look at. Never got offended once even as a 7 yr old.

I used to come across all the surfers vans down along the north front years ago. I haven't seen them in ages though. I don't know if this is in the video here, but Brid was the first place in the UK to see surfing. There is a plaque on a wall along the north promenade telling how the King of Hawaii's sons were sent to school in the UK and their teacher brought them to Brid. They had a boat builder make surfboards to their design and used them in the sea at Brid. Late 1800s I think.
