Staithes is a seaside village in the Scarborough Borough of North Yorkshire, England. With its higgledy-piggledy cottages and winding streets, Staithes has the air of a place lost in time.

Once one of the largest fishing ports on the North East coast, this beautiful coastal hamlet is now a well-loved base for exploring Yorkshire's cliff top paths and discovering the delights of rock pooling and fossil hunting on the small sandy beach.
Formerly one of the many fishing centres in England, Staithes Yorkshire is now largely a tourist destination within the North York Moors National Park.
The name Staithes derives from Old English and means 'Landing-Place'. It has been suggested that it is so named after being the port for the nearby Seaton Hall and Hinderwell. The spelling Steeas is sometimes used to indicate the traditional local dialect pronunciation /stɪəz/.
At the turn of the 20th century, there were 80 full-time fishing boats putting out from Staithes. A hundred years later there are still a few part-time fisher men.
There is a long tradition of using the coble (a traditional fishing vessel) in Staithes.
It was reported in 1997 that the Royal Mail were encouraging the occupants of Staithes to number their houses instead of relying on names. Whilst the regular postperson had no difficulty with the narrow streets and cottages, the relief postal staff were getting confused. Royal Mail also claimed it would aid efficiency by their postal machines which automatically read the addresses.
The CBeebies (CBBC) series Old Jack's Boat, starring Bernard Cribbins, is set in and filmed in Staithes, with Old Jack's house located at 4 Cowbar Bank in the village.
The 2017 Oscar Winning film Phantom Thread starring Daniel Day-Lewis features the famous cobbled streets of Staithes North Yorkshire England.
In 1745-46, Staithes' most famous resident, Captain James Cook worked in Staithes as a grocer's apprentice where he first gained his passion for the sea.
He moved to nearby Whitby where he joined the Royal Navy. William Sanderson's shop, where Cook worked, was destroyed by the sea, but parts were recovered and incorporated into "Captain Cook's Cottage".
In this 4K Virtual Walking Tour of Staithes Village we see the streets winding their way down to Staithes Beach, and all the quaint and cute houses of Staithes Fishing Village England.
I can thoroughly recommend a visit to Staithes England. It really is one of the best, cutest and most cinematic UK seaside towns.
So if you're looking for a relaxing day out, or maybe a holiday in a picturesque fishing village atmosphere head for Staithes UK

This brings back so many happy memories of my late partner also called Linda she passed away over a year ago, she suffered with Parkinson's, we rented a cottage at the top of the lane over that narrow bridge, it was hard pushing her wheelchair up that hill, but Staithes has to be the most important memory of my life with her. Such a very beautiful place, thank you for this excellent video, I think your best 👍

Sorry for yor loss. Visit Stathes on a warm summer day. Sit and enjoy the view. Visit the lifeboat station and put some folding money into the collecting box in memory of Linda, then come home and plan to visit again. We did when we lost 2 close friends. Bless you and stay safe.

When you go abroad you have got to to queue up at the airport pay extra money for an airport taxi to get you there in the first place you then after speak the language and sort out the foreign currency what "" all for a bit of sunshine which half the time you are not guaranteed And you have just paid out thousands so you might as well use that money and come to places like this To me it's far better than eating foreign muck and sitting round a swimming pool all day I have done the foreign holidays and I have done the British holidays and I like the British ones the best Especially when you hit the nice weather but on saying that it's nice to see it in the winter aswell

@@jackwatsonepic626 In many countries of the world it is eaten organic or of good quality. All places in the world have their charm for culture. You have to have an open mind. I am Argentina, and for us it is very expensive to travel abroad to know. I could also say my country is better for its landscapes (Aconcagua almost 7000 meters above sea level, Iguazú Falls, Perito Moreno Glacier) 4 climates and natural resources. But, it is interesting to know other cultures as well. The more we close our minds, the more ignorant we will be.

Growing up, early 90s my best mate lived in the cottage with the stairs, next to the life boat shed ( his dad was a volunteer ) the whole family would go up to visit them every summer. They were convinced that the cottage was haunted by a friendly ghost. I never saw the ghost but I didn't doubt it. He lives in Manchester now , he's still my best mate. Happy days

Staithes - just up the road from us. The senior resident women wearing traditional plain long skirts and black bonnets, would sit outside their cottages with their spinning wheels. I would climb down the harbour ladder to swim. No heath and safety concerns when I was a youngster. Glad I survived to tell the tale! The North Yorkshire coast inspires my children's coastal adventures, Ellie Booton's Journals.

Thank you for this. I am a Yorkshire lad born and bred, but only been to Staithes once, when the BBC filmed an episode of "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates" here in 1998. My late godmother, a TV bit parter and extra made what was to be the last of her TV appearances here. I went along to watch filming, and after she had a quiet word with the director, I was allowed to be in the same scene (stood opposite the circular steps near the harbour). First time seeing Staithes again in 22 years. Happy memories, thank you.

Thank you so much for filming Staithes (and Robin Hood's Bay). I came to this wonderful place as a schoolchild over 60 years ago. At the top of the hill there was a children's holiday camp for school parties (housed in WWII Nissan huts l think). Your walking tour captures the essence of Staithes. Fortunately, its topography means it will never be "overrun" by tourists.

Worked in Staithes some years ago, Waterworks at the top of the hill, but also in the Pumping Station aside of the Lifeboat House, we could only work at low tide, certainly an attractive place.

Thank you for a brilliant tour of Staithes! Recently we visited just after the Bank Holiday but to our disappointment it was so crowded there was nowhere to park and reluctantly we had to drive away. So your super walk, so informative and showing every aspect with great music has really compensated.

Next time you go, park on one of the housing estates at the top of the village and then go by rolling cross to the bottom of the village. None of these walks of Staithes has even been up top or over rolling cross.

Thank you it was lovely to walk around Staithes again, I spent a great deal of my childhood there. My grandparents had a cottage there, my great grandfather built a cottage on Broom hill. Suggest you could go up some of the steps to the top of the village, lots of steps up through the cottages, so many different views and interesting little passageways eg Gun Gutter. Thanks again for a wonderful memory

As you cross the bridge over the beck and turn right the first cottage, with the red door, is Auntie Annies Cottage, at 19:15 mins. We stayed there first in the late 1990s and have stayed there many times up to a few years ago. The view from that front door is one of the finest in Yorkshire, nay, the UK, nay, the world. We've been there on lovely days like in this video and in raging storms when the waves almost reach roof height. Staithes is beautiful, if you can do visit.

Have watched many of your videos on my smart tv and was unable to comment so now I'm on the pc. Your videos are amazing and very professional, enjoyed them all so far around Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, so much so that we are visiting Lincolnshire next week. Can't leave without saying, though, your choice of music is brilliant, perfect accompaniment to your videos. Well done Gimbal tv, an excellent site for travellers.

Thank you for this, a lovely place, now on my list. I actually went on a school visit to Staithes and Whitby in 1977. Two things i remember, hopefully correctly. We stayed in what im sure were old army barracks near Staithes. Long green wooden buildings in a row with bunk beds down each side. Im sure i found them on google but they were all painted and lots of flowers, maybe turned into chalets ? Also we all sat up high on a steep hillside drawing the scenery, sort of a valley looking down on the bay/harbour but the thing i remember about it was there were pigeon coops dotted about where we sitting and also on the opposite side. Sorry long time ago so hard to remember details. Does anyone else remember any of this. I remembered a third thing lol We visited a museum that had a black mummified hand in a glass cabinet. Ive subscribed as im always looking for places to visit and stay. Ive tended to stick to the South Coast as its nearer and weather seems easier to rely on but will definitely when possible re visit Whitby and Staithes. Thank you again
