@@CPS42069 That's not true, the Scandanavian release has a different-sounding soundtrack, plays in 50fps, and also the player starts off with 7 lives instead of 3. This video is clearly showing the Famicom version.

PAL games on the NES are miserable because they only run at 50hz, which means that the gameplay has been slowed down compared to the original 60hz Japanese version. The soundtrack in the PAL NES version also is not as full and rich as the Famicom version due to differences in the hardware. The songs are the same compositions, but they just sound less vibrant in the PAL version. Also the game is known as "Mr. Gimmick" in PAL, which means that Yumetaro's name has been changed to Mr. Gimmick. There is no dialogue in the game, so this only affects the title screen. But officially, even in English nowadays, the player character is named Yumetaro, so I guess the PAL version is now "non canon". The only benefit to playing the PAL version is that you start with more lives. But I don't feel like this is a worthwhile tradeoff.

Only heard about this now, but I'm glad to hear it. I have zero first-hand experience with the original, the first time I learned Gimmick! existed was when I saw its tool-assisted speedrun, but the music carved out a niche in my heart which the game settled into nicely. I'll definitely be picking this up when I get the chance.

I played it at TGS yesterday. The rewind feature makes the game way more beatable. The game broke on me though. Frames started skipping and made it completely unplayable. I have never seen this kinda behavior in a game before. They did fix it, but I really would like to know what caused such a behavior.

Aspect ratio is broken. NES graphics should be scaled horizontally by 1.40625, just because Sunsoft draw all game graphics expecting it was renderer on CRT TV.
