This product review compares two colored pencil brands -- Koh-i-noor Polycolor vs Faber Castell Polychromos. The video also features urban sketching on a Moleskine sketchbook to demo both oil-based colored pencils. Is Polycolor a good Polychromos alternative for those who do art on a budget? Can Koh-i-noor achieve the same results we get from Faber Castell Polychromos?
This video discusses Koh-i-noor's packaging, vibrancy, lightfastness, blending ability, core durability and other features.

Koh-I-Noor will provide the chart if asked and here's their response: testing of the lightfastness in KOH-I-NOOR HARDTMUTH, a.s. is based on the norm ČSN EN ISO 105-02 and is evaluated in accordance with the norm ČSN EN 20105-A02 (grey standard). We use the method 5 from the norm ČSN EN ISO 105-02, because the energy load is defined clearly and according to the standards in this norm (in contrary, the non-clear definition of irradiance is one of the reasons why we do not use the standards for the coatings of the colour pencils - D6901). When testing the lightfastness, the sample is exposed to the light with the wavelengths that corresponds to the environment inside the house - which means that we use the wavelengths 320 nm and longer. At the same time, the samples are exposed to the higher temperatures (50 °C) so you can be sure that once you create your artwork with the permanent shades, you do not have to worry about it in the hot summer days. The conditions that are set for the testing of the artworks of our products are overrated in purpose - they are more extreme than the conditions in the ideal environment, so the stated consistency of the colours is quite overrated, too. As for this reason, you do not have to worry that your artwork will be devalued quickly if you cannot keep the ideal conditions for preserving your artwork. How long can our products last? Everything depends on the conditions where our products are used and on the conditions where the artwork is displayed. Generally, we can say that the devaluation of the artwork is speeded up by: • higher light load • thinner coating (valid both for the permanent coating and for its soluble forms - e.g. aquarelles) • use of the wrong base (too acidic or alcalic materials, unsuitable filled papers, etc.) If you want to extend the lifetime of your art work we suggest: • If the art work is not displayed you should store it in a dark and dry place with the usual temperature (15-25 °C). • When the art work is displayed, used light should not include other wavelength than those included in the visible light (UV and IR radiation does not affect the perception on the colours, but decreases the lightfastness). You can also use the protective glass that transmits only the visible light. • Choose dry environment for the exhibition of the artwork (very important mainly for use of the Aquarelle colours!) and make sure that the source of light (which is usually the source of heat, too) is not too close to your artwork (as well as any other source of the heat). • Follow the suggested method of use for the specific product (e.g. use of the priming coat, fixative, etc.) When the (ideal) conditions are met (those should be meet in every gallery that cares about the right lighting of the artworks - and they receive the energy load no more than 300 kJ/m2 per year), we can determine the lightfastness as following: * the coating of the colour will disappear within 25 years ** the coating of the colour will change noticeably within 25 years * the coating of the colour will last longer than 25 years ** the coating of the colour will last longer than 50 years *** the coating of the colour will last longer than 100 years We hope we have helped to choose the right shades for your artwork and you will be satisfied with our products.

Thanks for sharing this very comprehensive info. Not many companies disclose their lightfastness rankings, let alone their process in arriving at their rankings. This transparency just elevated my trust in Koh-i-noor.

Thank you for the nice comparison. 🥰 I personally wouldn't say "Polychromos are getting more expensive". More open and probably correct would be "they're getting more expensive where I am". I'm from Germany and they cost the same since a so many of years. 👌

Hi Ginger, thank you for the fair and unbiased review. I have always liked Koh-I-Noor products such as their graphite sketch pencils, it was only this year I tried their colored pencils after watching KZbin video reviews. They are great price wise and in the end, no , they are not as good as Faber Castells, in my opinion, but they are plenty good enough for using in my sketchbooks, like you said. You did a thorough review, and as always it was a pleasure to watch you make art. God bless you sister, Linda😊🙏💖

Thanks for a great review. I've bought a couple of pencils from different brands to test out what I like. What I've noticed is that both of these are great for details as they are harder than for example coloursoft. I could not decide which of these to go for, but after seeing your abd ithers' reviews I think I know which to add to my collection.

Hi Ginger, I noticed the position of your hand on the pencil while doing your swatches. It was further up the pencil when applying the Koh I noor - meaning lighter pressure and thus less pigment is applied - and closer to the paper when laying down the Polychromos, resulting in greater pressure and more pigment laydown. Surely this would affect the results that you obtained. Thanks for the review. Liz

Ahhhh not quite, the Koh I Noor 144 pieces can be had for about $120, at eBay. I have not seen that set on Amazon…..yet. I have just purchased a 60 set of Faber Castell, unused and 50% cheaper…..again eBay. BUT I noticed my Amazon is selling 120 Polychromos for 50% of the original price. So I might get those first. Can’t beat that price.

This is a very good review. I will admit that I'm mostly here to watch you color with your wonderful color selections. You are so talented at using so many colors while still making them all look harmonious. It's definitely also interesting to see how the pencils perform. It appeared that you got a tad of smudging on erasing even the blue Polychromos. But it takes some effort to get them to smear, while it's easier with the Koh-I-Noor and definitely with the Prismacolor. It probably all depends on the color used. I have the whole 150 set of Prismacolor, but maybe someday I'll augment them with some more Polychromos -- although not at the current pricing, which just SHOT up in recent days! Thanks again, Ginger.

oh you're so right, Teresa. At the rate they're going with the price hikes, Polychromos just might kick themselves out of competition. No one can afford a set anymore. It doesn't matter how well the colored pencils perform, but if you'd break the bank because of it, there's no point in using them.

@@GingerUmali It's true. But their competition is Luminance and Derwent Lightfast, so maybe they see room for higher pricing? They will certainly lose a chunk of the hobbyist market, but maybe it makes sense for them. Maybe they're scaling back? I don't know. I love my Prismacolor, warts and all.

Remember that Polychromos are manufactured in Germany so the price also reflects the salaries and wages of the workers. If people are to earn living wages then the items are priced accordingly.

Thank you for doing the Kohinoor but I also have their pastel pencils any chance of a review on them, I will stick to Kohinoor tho because I find them very good for the price, on the whole I think it would have been better if you had compared similar priced pencils, I don't expect them to be as good as the expensive Faber Castle ones, But thank you it was a very thorogh review

Thanks for watching Janet. People have been asking what they could substitute for the Polychromos since it's become more and more difficult to buy Faber Castell. The Koh-i-noor came into the comparison because it is also an oil-based pencil. It was the premise of this video to see if one can make a switch from Polychromos to Polycolor given that Koh-i-noor is more affordable. So far, I like Koh-i-noor too. I was so happy with it that I decided to make another video on their extra soft pastels. I'm still working on that video and will upload it in a few more days. I hope you can check that out too.

Why is Polychromos becoming difficult to obtain? Where do you live? I’m in Europe and the manufacturer has not stopped producing them. On another note Polychromos are an oil pencil whereas Polycolours are wax based so most suited to be compared to Prismacolors in my opinion.
