Just for a quick clarification for people saying i should have just answered him! Yes, the whole situation would have been over much quicker if I had told him "no" right off the bat. I'm just personally VERY against the idea of rewarding bad behavior to any extent. I get hundreds of messages from people on pretty much all of my social media asking me for information to work with me and plenty of hem are perfectly sweet, but I just don't have enough time in the day to politely tell everybody "I'm sorry I can't", or else I'd never have any time to actually draw. Considering how I don't even have time to respond to every nice person who asks for information to hire me, I definitely wasn't going to go out of my way to say no to someone just because they were ruder than usual. I hope that makes sense!

I follow a singer that does livestreams a couple times a month, and while she doesn't have the largest following on KZbin, her streams still get a couple hundred viewers. Without fail, there's always a couple people who get upset or offended if she doesn't acknowledge every single thing they say. She likened it to being in a big room with two hundred people, all of them trying to talk to you at the same time, and getting mad that you aren't talking directly to them all the time. I can only imagine how hard it is for someone with almost 8x the subs as her. Oh, and incredible artwork, as always. Your colors are so intricate, and the personality of the characters you draw shines through very well, as always.

Only really bad commission story I have is. This guy started commissioning me for multiple projects. The first read flag was he had to have a friend pay for it for him. ok weird but ok. then she told me she need it to be broken into sections. Ok it was a lot of money so could be done. But it started to get annoying when she was wanting it to be super weird numbers like 19.95 + 43.15 and stuff like that . It was a lot of money so i grinned and bared it. then they wanted daily updates while working...ok weird but ok. So went through the first project finished and sent it off. At this point it got bad. he asked for a minor change. Ok no problem asked him before i did the change if anything else needed to be changed he said no. Ok do change, he then asked for another. ok... tell him I typically only do 2-3 changes to work once i finishe it so look it over so he can make sure it is as he wants it. he says that is all. finishes and sent. next project i had to deal with this friend again and weird money amounts. again wants updates everyday. finish it and again he wants changes after he as seen the progress at least 3 times. ok make changes. again wants more changes. after the 5th he is finally satisfied. he wants to commission me again says freind sent money already. What we didnt even talk about what he wanted. I tell him what? he is all do the work i payed you. I finally noped out of that. sent the money back and told him i would not work for him anymore due to his consent corrections after I finished even though he saw the WIPS daily. he rages and leaves. about 2 weeks later he messages me begging me to do his work. I refused. he kept at it and i blocked him. But over all my watchers are awesome. They really help a lot and when they can give me moneys for work. its the best to draw for moneys.

I don't want to be a person posting a life story in the comments section but commissioners need to understand that when it comes to an artist making work for someone that its up to them or not to do it. Artist do commissions to 1. improve themselves 2. to branch out and see clientele that could potentially work for for future projects. BUT more importantly to make money to support themselves when creating art. If an artist isn't comfortable or wanting to make the work. Then the commissioner should understand and the artist is willing to take that loss. I myself use to be a Puff Artist; Powerpuff Girl Artist. UNDERLINE: use too be. I drew nothing but PPG and PPG OC's but as years went by, I wanted to branch from that and move toward my own style. Some followers understood and others just vanished and then others stuck around but didn't understand it at all. They just didn't grasp that I don't do Puff work period. I had one commissioner; who commissioned Puff art all the time in the past and I am sorry if he comes across the comment in any shape of form but this is my POV as the artist but when I moved on from PPG work; OFFICALLY done-zo and when I would open commissions from time to time. It would strictly be my own style and only ONEEEEE character to be drawn. But no. He wanted me to draw one oc that was basically a simple no depth lack of emotion original character and not close to my style and a puff character (and from time to time a KND character.) But I explained to him, countless times but he still would come back every time I would open commissions and still he would want only 'this style of work' and I will admit, I did give in a few times cause I needed the dA currency but his commission ideas along with were always the same and it wasn't helping me branch my work. I wanna say I've drawn about 5-8 pictures for this customer in the past and majority of them were around his one oc and another and involving the beach. Nothing to go with fetishes. It was just, his oc and the other character at a beach. That was all the detail I would get. Like, come on man. That's basically posting the same picture over and over. An artist can't do that, they won't get anywhere. I mean I can say, I can create a beach like a boss now but that's not the point. I had one person that asked me if I did NSFW at that time and I said no. They asked if I was willing to and I said no. And you know what, they understood and I was happy they understood. And they moved on. Just, people need to understand, there are paths to take when talking about getting commissions to artist. And what happened to you. I am sorry, that is NOT how they should do it. Make sure to check your email my ass. I'll check my email when I want to. Love you to bits. You deserve better from this cruel world. -holds you close in the biggest death hug ever-

The best commission experience I got was in irl class. What happened was I was showing my finished sketchbook to this girl and she said “Wow! It’s so pretty! Can you draw me?!” And before I even respond she slaps $25 in my hand and tells me she can’t wait to see how it’ll turn out. For the record, I had every intention of drawing her in the first place. But the fact she automatically knew that my art took effort, and she immediately wanted to show me that my work had value was so nice. It changed the way I viewed commission work and made me so happy,

This is the whole reason I stopped doing commission work and deleted my online presence and started all over. People think you owe them your time right off the bat just because you offer services. Then go as far as to belittle you for not being responsive right away, being on vacation, being sick, the whole works. I had something like this happen where when I finally answered and decided I would accept their commission, they spent their time making lewd and lascivious comments towards me with obvious implications of wanting to hook up. I basically had to endure it because I had taken a deposit and already started their work. Never again. I wish I had known you as an artist before I had started, you handle this far better than how I would have and I wish I had known how to be more perceptive to commissioners that were trying to waste my time. Thanks for being such a great influence and artist in the community Rea!

While I personally would have answered him back stating no, I understand why you didn't. I have, comparably, a lot more time than you. I honestly don't do commissions because I'm not very well noticed, nor do I want to be, and there are drawings people would request that I wouldn't bring myself to do because of my standards. When I draw there are a few rules I keep: characters are dressed modestly according to what being they are, no NSFW stuff, no tattoos, no excessive piercings, and no explicit material or words anywhere on the characters. These are just my standards and it would greatly limit my possible clientele to the point where it would be unwise. I wouldn't expect most commissioners to have my same standards for those reasons, and while I understand there's a market for clean content, I would just rather not deal with worrying about how many commissions I've done in order to live.

She could actually sue him for not paying upon the agreed amount but the court case would last so long it wouldnt be worth it. Best way to combat is force them to pay half upfornt and then pay the other half or make them sign a contract that agrees upon a amount and if they fail to deliver go to small claims court and it pretty open and shut case.

Honestly, I’m not even a professional artist, I just draw fan art for fun, and if I had people pressuring me to check my emails and trying to rush me along on a job, I couldn’t handle it. CREATIVE BLOCKS ARE THE WORST THING and add those mother flippers on top of all the other shit animators and other artists have to work through, I’d go insane. Serious Props to you Rea

hey , i was wondering if u could do a video ( not as a commission ) just explaining some things common seen in speed paints for an example people will do black line art color the art and then do a ombre colored line art just by going over the layer and not by going over every individual line I'm a beginner digital artist so i need the tips and tricks I'm not trying to push it on you its just a suggestion have a good day !~

I don't understand why someone would want to commission someone who they think is unreliable or unresponsive. If they think you're rude or unprofessional, why do they want to work with you? This dude sounds so entitled.

I'm sure you'll never see this, but I just want to tell you you're a very big inspiration to me. Especially since you want you're saving up money to build your own studio. I really love how you draw bodies so "realistically" you can say. I've always been insecured and you drawing your characters so differently has made me appreciate myself more.... Thank you and I love you!

I was actually with the guy for a while because getting ignored sucks and not replying to actual business emails even to just say no is super bad practice. But the guy went way over the line by messaging your friends to message you, thats just creepy

I do small commissions and I take what I can get but never lower my prices. I've had several people tell me "Anyone can do that" or " It's only small adjustments for the next drawing so I don't have to pay full price right?" It's really frustrating to have people tell you how much your own art is worth.

I remember one of my friends received a couple commissions a long time ago from some guy, a custom design and a fullbody, and the guy ended up taking his friendly 'service worker waiter' replies as personal responses; he kept bothering him like they were close friends after his commissions were done. He would send him loads upon loads of messages each day, describing how depressed he was, how much he wanted to kill himself, etc, and when my friend didn't respond, he'd begin questioning him like this, asking why he was posting on his story and commenting on his friends' posts instead of responding to him. There was even a really weird moment where he sent my friend a d*ck pic and asked to see one of his because it's 'what close friends do'. My friend is a really empathetic guy and has issues saying no to people, so it took me and a couple other friends to convince him to block the guy, but it's absolutely insane how people treat artists over commissions??? What do we do to deserve such horrible treatment? Edit: Oh, as for the stuff the guy bought? When he realized my friend wasn't responding he began saying he 'wouldn't have paid for them if he realized he was such a horrible person' and began threatening to sell them. Which my friend didn't care about since he was already paid, but the worst part is the dude kept trying to convince paypal he was scammed to get his money back. It was just an icky situation in general

Thank you so much for explaining your process with dealing with people looking for commissions! I've been on both sides of the endeavor a few times and have always found the whole thing pretty anxiety-inducing. However, the way you laid it out was simple and effective. I'll definitely keep it in mind in the future!

Love the part when he says that all animators seem to have this issue with not answering e-mails - dude you are the common denominator :D the fact it never even crossed his mind is kinda hilarious as it seems to be a problem he has frequently.

Rea background skills, amazing anatomy and commitment to sooo much detail is AMAZING!! And the fact that shes able to come so far is astounding. However I do wish Rea tried coloring certain blocks of colors on sepereate layers her shading is passionate but it just idk how to put its just too much sometimes and the colors tend to looks blurred and mudified a bit. Not to mention she places a whole ton of higlhights everywhere and it feels like my eyes are fighting on where the focal point is. Once again I really thinks she is a wonderful artists and great animator, bit I do think she needs to remember that artwork (big art pieces) need to have clear lines and a focal point.

I would like to personally thank this video for existing at such a convenient time. Actually today someone approached me on Instagram addressing me as “hey bro,” like i don’t even know u? And they immediately start requesting a specific “fortnite lion poster because they want to be a famous fortnite player and they are counting on me” implying that they want free art. Then at a last desperate demand they say they “really need this art by tomorrow night” i honestly hate rude people like that and I’m sorry u had to go thru such an annoying experience

I would've just gave one simple response. The reason it feels so frustrating is because a no is easily said. I get that its not required or anything, but I would at least say s o m e t h i n g. Like a no. He does indeed sound entitled, and v e ry disrespectful, and is REALLY PERSISTENT (like i would've given up after a dm wasn't effective) but a simple no might've helped. Edit: saw the pinned post, and it truly does make sense, and i get it.

God I hate this. Like, I get being anxious because someone isn't responding. I'm that way for sure. If it's been like a day and I haven't gotten an email back I start wondering if the person hates me or if the email got lost. BUT I'm also self-aware enough to know that I'm just being paranoid and that I shouldn't take it out on that person. Also, I'm smart enough to take a hint if I've tried reaching them multiple times and they don't respond.

Aw Rea, I'm so sorry to hear that someone would be such a creep. It's pretty weird that they would do that.... And it is pretty rude considering that video was about your dad's life and his passing! Also, though I have never taken commissions, and I'm still a budding digital artist, I still understand what you mean by the bad and or rude commissioners, and you deserve SO much better than what those two made you deal with! I'm glad you were able to get at least one situation handled at least by blocking the one dude.

I've only ever commissioned once, a couple years ago, and I was so nervous during the process! I was so afraid to ask anything in fear of making the artist angry or upset, to the extent that I almost didn't even ask them to tweak a few things when they differed from my concept! (I didn't understand it was ok for me to ask for design changes and stuff since I was the one requesting the art of my original characters! The language barrier between me and the artist probably didn't help! But they were so very kind and helped me through the whole process!) I could never imagine being this rude period, especially BEFORE even paying for the commission!

7:49 Sadly I think I saw one of his works when I was just trying to google your username…. And then I saw the thread of him saying why he was blocked… yeah um maybe he should self reflect and realize doing that isn’t generally seen as a good thing and is pretty gross.

I've only just found your channel, but your art is brilliant! it's so detailed, soft, and it must take *ages.* you have a really engaging way of telling stories and a lovely voice to boot! it's a small thing, but I adore the fact that one of your characters has visible skin folds - it's a really good representation of real people!
