Gino Vannelli - "I Just Wanna Stop" Drum Cover by Alan Badia on TAMA Superstar Drums

This is dedicated to Mark Craney, master drummer for Gino Vannelli in 1978 on the Brother To Brother album and the following tour. I loved drumming to this album in my very early teen years and still find some of the songs very challenging to play accurately. Mark Craney was an inventive and an underrated drummer who's drumming style had a big influence on my playing and development, especially his use of flams - particularly when played on different sized toms to add melodic flavor. Incidentally, did you know Mark's favorite part of his kit was his hi hat?
Many people don't know that Mark was plagued with health problems for most of his professional career, all the way up to his death. He was a real pro and a fighter howerever, he never showed any sign of these problems while playing in concert or recording - and of course you would never know it from his perfect performances recorded and live. Unfortunately, Mark died on November 26, 2005 from pneumonia. RIP Mark (1952 † 2005). We love you.
I shot this video before I had mics on the drums. It took me many years to gather the drum kit you see here and I was just so excited to cover it on video I did it before I had any microphones.The drum track you hear is 100% Mark Craney, not my drums.

Well done! Mark was a criminally underrated drummer who could groove rings around Neil Peart. Songs that were note-dense , especially for pop.

Peart w/o argument is one of the best ever. But listen to him play Pick up the pieces (AWB) on the record Net ears revolutions. Technically perfect, but it lacks feel. It even stiffens up the whole band. I mean it’s ripping yeah, but is nowhere as good as the original. But nobody can play Peart with his feel. I mean that’s true for any good player.

Great job . I've been listening to Gino Vannelli since the mid seventies. I was in high school then and my buddies didn't care for his style. I loved it and told them so. I said his band was better than any one else we've seen, except for maybe Little Feat. They were all virtuoso musician's. Mark Craney and Carlos Rios, come on!

I got to see Mark once live with Jethro Tull in 1980. It was the single best drum performance I ever saw live and i have seen a lot of great drummers over the years. It was close to home for him in St. Paul Minnesota which helped to inspire him to play his best. You can see the tour on the Slipstream video. His playing that night was a display of creativity, where he was playing different beats every bar and it just blew us away!

My brother Ty was a studio drummer and took lessons from Mark when he was in the Woodland Hills Drum Club with Gregg Bissonette and Myron Grombacher. Mark was left handed and one of the most down to Earth people you’d ever know! This guy was a monster on the drums and he’s never mentioned in any top 10 lists online! Ty also took lessons from Rayford Griffin who is another underrated monster! Your drumming skills are very polished! Your timing is on Jeff Porcaro scale, you look relaxed and comfortable, your kit sounds great tune wise and mix wise. Great job on everything! Thanks for sharing your hard work with the world! Ahh, ok. Yes, loved the sound of Craney's drums on BTB. Before I got into drumming myself, I had the chance to attend one of the BTB concerts in Detroit around 1980 and was able to go to a little Vannelli afterglow party later. I met the backup singers and at one point, passed Craney in the hallway. Only wish I would have stopped to say hello to him. Because since that time, he's become my drumming "hero" if you will.
