Ginseng is from the Ginger family and can be used in any salad or stir fry, Used In Middle eastern cuisine and Chinese / Japanese cooking. You dont have to just make Tea from it... Westerners are so insular :)

Is it true Ginseng can't be grown in the same location? I tend to think it's not true because I see the shade tents in the same location years after year.
@wphsu995 жыл бұрын
It is true, we have not grown ginseng in the same location for over 40 years that our family has been growing. There are a number of issues with replanting on the same parcel of land. Most of this is due to the fact that ginseng has only been "domesticated" from the wild within the last 100 years (compared with other crops that have been domesticated for thousands of years or have been engineered using biotechnology) and still retains its genetic predisposition to kill off competing ginseng plants for self-preservation as it would in the wild.

@@wphsu99 Thanks for the information. If I remember the episode correctly it takes several years to grow ginseng, that's probably why I see the same shade tents in the same place for several years.

@@websurfer44 Yes, it takes 3-4 years (sometimes 5 years) for the plant to reach maturity. Seeds are picked in August or September and then planted the following year. The plant doesn't emerge until nearly a year later the next spring. So seeds that were picked in 2018, will be planted this year, and then not harvested until 3-5 years after that (2022-2024). So it is a long-term crop and labor of love!

I hate to say this but the Chef ruined the Bao by frying it. A Bao is NEVER meant to be fried. Bao means to wrap or stuff with food. He could have just crispy the Bao on a grill with butter and still created the crispiness in the bread. I bet the Bao is not an authentic Chinese Bao with the slightly aromatic sweet flavor.
