Sometimes when a person who wasn't around in 1973 only has stats to go by, shouldn't be making videos like this. You are 100% correct Austin Heidland. The Rangers were desperate for attendance and putting the hometown High School phenom on the mound at 18 years old, was that hook. They hurt him in every way, it wasn't that he couldn't pitch. He probably would have been a very good first round overall pick, but the rangers ruined him.

I'm old enough to remember the hype about David Clyde. He had a minuscule ERA as a high school pitcher, and he was rushed to the majors to help the Texas Rangers draw fans. Apparently he fell in with the wrong crowd (same old story) and his career fell apart. i understand he fell just a couple of games short of qualifying for an MLB pension.
@kendallevans4079

I must as old as you because I remember him also. And you're right about the Rangers exploiting him. We (Angels) did a similar thing to a young pitcher in that same era named Andy Hassler. Tall, good looking kid with live arm...they kept shoving him out there regardless of results because he was considered a attendance draw. Sad what team economics can do to a young talent.

The amount of money the Yankees gave him as a signing bonus was astronomical for starters and Taylors career ending injury to his pitching hand in a brawl was just insane. I had all his rookie cards. What Bush did was drive drunk and run over a man on a motorcycle. When he got out of prison, he had to try out for teams by pitching behind the Golden Corral where he worked (his probation terms required him to go from home straight to work, and from work straight home). Interestingly the Rangers managed (to some extent) to rehab two former #1 overall picks, Bush and Josh Hamilton. The only thing the most over-glorified AAA team in baseball has done somewhat right.

David Clyde was to a degree the victim of a lousy owner. Of course he wasn’t ready to be facing major league hitters, but he was an attraction for a struggling owner. Not even a week after the Padres gave Matt Bush a 1 million dollar signing bonus, they sent him to Arizona for a baseball camp and him and his brother got arrested at a bar for being drunk and fighting. The Pads were so pissed off that they almost rescinded his bonus but his agent talked the Padres into forgiving him. But he was a bust anyway, never played to his potential as a SS or a hitter. In and out of jail and always in trouble. He really blew it.

David Clyde is a cautionary tale of what an organization does not do with regards towards the development of a high school prospect. 20 days after his final high school game he is pitching in the big leagues because the owner at the time Bob Short wanted to boost sagging attendance. He was essentially fed to the wolves having some early success but that too was temporary. Had he gotten drafted and given a chance to develop he might have had a legitimate chance to have a long and successful career in the big leagues.

When the Padres selected Matt Bush I heard that it was John Moores who pushed to have him drafted against the recommendations of Padres scouts. I think the reason why the Padres wasted their first overall pick on him is only because he was from the San Diego area. It's true that there have been some players from the San Diego area that have turned out to be good, but Matt Bush was not one of them. It compares to when the Chargers drafted Ryan Leaf.

TENNESSEE had an 18-year-old farm boy who was throwing 107mph for seven innings he was averaging ten strikeouts per game and threw six shutouts in one season, He played in what was called the K&T league which was teams in Tennessee playing teams in KENTUCKY it was for adults over the age of 18, CINCINNATI, ST.LOUIS, both sent scouts to see him and both offered big signing bonuses and contracts but police said it wasn't enough and sent the scouts packing back to their teams, This is a farmboy earning 36.00 a week living in a two-room shack with his father mother sister and brother and he wore overhauls, shoes held together by fishing line and the family survived off beans, potatoes, eggs, and coffee on Saturday night it was bologna and cheese with an RC cola, The last offer was 20,000 signing bonus and 45,000 a season and MICKEY MANTEL was the highest-paid player at 125,000 a season so the 45,000 was a damn good offer back then and still, the police said no, finely the scouts gave-up and there were no more offers were made, the story goes he remained a dirt poor farmer still playing on a Sunday still throwing over a 100 mph and still averaging 10 strikeouts per game, People in the town said when it finely dawned on him there would be no more offers that he just sat down and cried until the police told him to take his ass home or go to jail,

There is a book that I am aware of but have not read called "Seasons in Hell : With Bill Martin, Whitey Herzog and "The Worst Team in Baseball" - The 1973-1975 Texas Rangers". The book mentions the poor handling of David Clyde along with the infamous yet darkly-comedic well document incident known as "Ten Cent Beer Night".

When my dad heard someone who speaks really fast he would say, I bet that person is from New York. He would then ask where they were from and he was right, all of the time. I think it helped that he was also from New York and had a trained ear. Nice list GiraffeNeck.

I would add Mike Ivie. Drafted by the Padres 1st overall in 1970 as a catcher, and even though he was a catcher in the minors, he refuse to catch in the majors. There were times he had a problem throwing the ball back to the pitcher. He ended up at third and first. Now he was better than the other first round pick of the padres, Matt Bush, had a decent career in the major with several teams, but he was no first round pick.

I don't think you can be hard on players getting injuries so they never reach their full potential. As well as many first rounders, etc. Baseball is probably the hardest sport to reach the pros and have continued success. I do agree with you on your number #1, in his case he basically didn't have the desire or discipline to make it or so it seems.

'66 was an interesting draft. Not only did the Mets take Chilcott, they took Chilcott and left a gentleman named Reggie Jackson on the board who was gobbled up by the KC A's at #2. But the best story of the '66 draft is Morton Lamb taken in the 2nd round by the Indians ("Guardians"). Lamb hit 37 home runs as a High Schooler that year. Sadly, the night afore his first game in the Minors, he was caught in a hotel with 2 hookers and a monkey that he had stolen from the local zoo. During Lamb's arrest, which he resisted, he tore both is ACL and broke a small bone in his neck. He never appeared in a Professional game due to the injuries.
