An acquaintance of mine has a very big sailboat, with two huge masts. One day a sailor of his went to change the lamp at the end of the mast, the rope broke and he fell to the deck. He didn't die from the fall, but from starvation. Really the mast was too hig. - Beautiful video and its 6 sequels. I wish you an excellent season. Greetings from Rio de Janeiro.

So glad to see Kazza's heartfelt comments at the end about being anxious about the passage, but glad for the extra hands. I like the videos that show teaching new sailors the ropes, plus the ones that prove that even seasoned sailors still get nerves.

@@tylershomevideos sometimes having steps on a mast can be helpful so some sailors install it. Others (like me) have chosen not too because going up the mast is not really something I would do by myself since I usually have crew and also because the steps would add unwanted weight to the mast, it's another item that needs to be inspected and the steps would also be something to worry about my halyard getting caught on or snag sails if they should luff and crinkle in the wrong direction. However, I do know some single handed sailors that find them more useful. To each their own.

Brian’s nervous too. He has entire family on a boat in the middle of the ocean. He overcomes his nervousness by thinking about every possible scenario, doing preventative maintenance before something fails, and having safety equipment in case the safety equipment fails. Basically maintaining his boat like a jet airplane.

18:30 When I was 18 I worked for an airplane mechanic who specialized in historical planes. He pointed out out a rigging like this but on an bi-plane. The pin had cracked and failed and if that pin had let go, the entire wing would have come off. And because that pin had no force on it on the ground, it would have failed in flight resulting in a fatal crash. Early in aviation they didn't make bi-planes because mono-planes lacked lift, it was purely for strength. It was easier and lighter to build a box structure to hold the wings on.

Love the video of showing future captains about rigging inspect and what to look for. On that note where your forestay connects to the mast cotter pin has early signs of corrosion under the paint ( paint is starting to crack). the paints helps aluminium reduces the corrosion when in contact with stainless steel fittings. May pay you when in port next to have a look again at what i looking at in the video 18:58, It seems minor now but this is an area is taking a lot of strain regards

Delos is the content-king of the sailing channels, more plot lines to follow than predicted hurricane tracks: two big responsibilities with training a crew and minding a child. Crew needs challenges and curriculum, hone problem-solving skills; the wee one requires that all the hazards get secured while keeping up with the needs of a toddler. Devos is already deployed in warmer waters with winter coming. If they had a production crew in tow, they could likely produce hour-long weekly adventures.

I was actually tearing up a little when Tay went up the mast and looked at the beautiful sunset...fernweh crawlt up to me pretty quickly. Well, the Germans naturally have a word for that too. Meet fernweh. Marrying the words fern, or distance, and wehe, an ache or sickness, the word can be roughly translated as “distance sickening” or “far woe” - a pain to see far-flung places beyond our doorstep. Think of it as the opposite of heimweh (homesickness).
