I watched this and was just horrifically sad at the end. I do think Kirat was ignoring red flags, but I also attribute that to her feeling fragile and maybe desperate for love, and at some point it seems like she felt like she invested so much time into this person that she didn’t want to just leave. It really seems like her mental health was deteriorating. The cousin though… absolutely heartless and psychotic, no amount of ignoring red flags can justify or explain what she did. Especially considering the romantic angle/late night calls, etc. There’s something absolutely harrowing about thinking you are speaking romantically and sexually to someone and finding out they are not only NOT them, but related to you. That just upset the crud out of me.

In the documentary, Bobby’s “wife” wanted a divorce due to the stress and distance, while kirat was there for him throughout. Lo and behold, Bobby gets divorced, she breaks up with her partner, and they’re now dating. It’s very transparent.. she officially cut ties with her bf once Bobby seemed like a viable option. Monkey branching. Also the cousin was 15 when this whole thing started, kirat was 32

Yes, she ignored red flags. But i think people here are underestimating the power and imfluence of having a trusted family member reinforce that all of this stuff is real because they've confirmed it. If you listen to the podcast and watch the full documentary, you'll see how far Simran went to create this false sense of reality for Kirat. It is insane. When she had doubts, Simran always had an explanation (and Simran was also catfishing her ex, Bobby's brother). Yes, the witness protection stuff and other things were ridiculous. But this isnt like some of the folks on Scamfish who think they're dating a celebrity or send thousands to someone they've never met. Simran wasn't out for money. She is just a sociopath. I have much more compassion for Kirat than for many other catfish victims I've seen.
@prajnajois4065Ай бұрын
This. Gaslighting can really really mess up someone's views, and Kirat seems like a victim of abuse. It takes years and years to recover from gaslighting, as one pieces together reality and digests it, while finding a personality and a sense of self in the midst of it all - I don't blame her for still "smiling" at the whole thing. Kirat won a out of court settlement for a undisclosed amount & a public apology. Ppl think Simran left the country. Bobby was not rich living this jetset live but a normal dentist. I can understand why she was manipulated longer due to her specific circumstances but a decade? She has to take a little bit of responsibility for this nonsense, especially with all of these so called “medical issues.” Be for real.

I’m so glad someone is talking about this story. I 100% think she knew it was very unlikely Bobby was really Bobby and that she was maybe even okay with this guy being a catfish. Maybe she thought I like this guy the way he is I’ll accept him, and then once Bobby was revealed she was flipped on her head

She didn't consent to anything with her cousin. She consented to... Things... With the guy she thought she was dating.

It's the fact that the person who did all this was a younger cousin, which means that elaborate plan was executed by someone who was a child practically.

9:40 Completely agree, and it's a good message for young people. Even if a family is your primary goal in life, don't put everything into it. You always run the risk of your partner backing out. Mine refused to get a job after 7 years, but expected me to be the full time breadwinner but also a stay at home mother. So that relationship ended and now in my 30s I'm having to get my higher education and build what I should've built in my 20s. But I spent my 20s trying to work on that relationship and I was supporting his family. Absolutely do not put in more than you're getting out. Don't put your life on hold for people who are not putting anything in. Even now in my new relationship it's making me very hesitant to make myself vulnerable so it's still affecting me. Look after yourself kids, no one else will.

She was like mad at them for their fear n didn’t realize she had gone full blown creep. @babyturkey8342Ай бұрын
She's still a victim lol...being gullible, dumb, stupid, etc etc etc is not a crime it's not morally wrong. What the person on the other end was doing to her is morally and wrong. Her being "stupid" doesn't take away the fact that she's a victim 🙄
@lane6216Ай бұрын
@ , I didn’t say anything regarding all the words you used against her. Re-read my post.
@michalovesanimeАй бұрын
@@lane6216 maybe we just dont agree with the "self victimization" part. Cuz its still making the victim responsible for something that was done to them. Being naive, gullible etc doesnt matter. Its basically a sign of having too much faith in humanity, its sad that people need to beat that out of themselves. We can all be frustrated because we wanted BETTER FOR HER though
@drewgoin8849Ай бұрын
@@babyturkey8342 I don't think anyone is arguing that gullibility is against the law. I do think that many viewers feel their level of sympathy is moderated by the victim's incredible lack of common sense.

Remember, we hear all the red flags in quick succession. When it happens over years, the time between the flags diminishes the effect. Pile on a lot of red flags within a short time, and the pattern is easier to see. Also, we are not emotionally invested which often skews one's decision making and critical thinking.
@urfosterdadАй бұрын
i honestly believe a huge part of these ppl subconsciously know they're getting catfished, but another subconscious part of them understands that the only way to the truth is through playing the part. and i think some ppls curiousity is stronger than their common sense. if ppl js admitted they were getting catfished but that they want to know who is behind it, they could js entertain the situation without growing emotionally attached or losing money
@OctoBear88Ай бұрын
I was catfished once in my early 20s And at first I thought it was real, and thought I was loved and had someone, I had sent them so much money and wasted like 5+ years. At first I didn’t realize there were red flags, I was seeing it all through rose coloured glasses and believed it all, then my friends knew how to reverse search his images and told me who the guy really was and he was some old rugby player who retired, and I confronted them, they said that yea it is them and that they were scared to tell me the truth. I believed it again, and wanted it to be him, we would talk on the phone, never video chat, and I would talk to his “cousin” as well and his imaginary daughter. I eventually found out that the guy whose image was being used, was working in a gym in Australia as a trainer. When confronted, they admitted it wasn’t them, then they sent a different image of another guy, I couldn’t find this guys image anywhere. But it all starts to spiral eventually, whenever I asked to vid call, or whenever I would threaten on flying to NC where they said they resided I’d get angry answers saying things like - I won’t talk to you ever again, I will not go see you, I will ignore you, etc Eventually I realized it was all the cousin, she was fooling me and we slowly stopped communicating.

The fact that Simran was 15 when she started it makes sense, because that's the kind of bullshit you pull at that age. I remember in the MySpace days we would make profiles with random pictures from the internet and chat with boys, pretending to be one girl when we were two friends giggling, making up stories about our glamorous life. But those usually ended after the sleepover, one time I chatted with someone for a week, saying I was at my glamorous job when I was in school. I started feeling weird about it and broke it off with the lie that I am back with my boyfriend and blocked him. I can see how that escalates, and a teenage Simran trying to get out of it with Witness Protection Programme (don't come looking for me) and even having a baby, hoping her cousin would break it off... I can totally see how that escalates. I mean, Kirat was too old to fall for this shit. And I think as she grew older, Simran should have just stopped and ghosted the situation, instead of bringing letters and stuff. It is psychotic, but I understand the beginning.

This was so funny the way you reacted to this show. Also in the Irish English culture especially mine, born 77 so my parents had big expectation on me getting married being the only girl out of 3 kids . My brothers could get away with anything but no me. It was very impressive growing up and truthfully traumatic . Religion plays a big part and specific gender roles . I’m now 47 happily married and don’t have much contact with my parents which to some people would be sad but I’m just glad to be my own person and my kids no regardless of gender etc they can do what can do and that it’s their life you only get one and it goes quick . Be good be honest be you 😊

my thing is…if “bobby”was a real person (which he was clearly since they apparently met at the club) wouldn’t she atleast acknowledge that he didnt know who she was when texting him?? how would that not raise red flags??? like i’m sorry but if i saw someone who i mainly talked to online and saw their face id IMMEDIATELY recognize them or atleast know that it’s them after a few seconds… that part should’ve been her sign. PLUS a quick google search of witness protection and the rules would’ve saved EVERYTHING. her parents clearly failed her with instilling self respect also: there should totally be criminal charges brought against the cousin. it’s upsetting that there has to be a money exchange for there to be an actual case
@muszajАй бұрын
she is the victim of her own lack of common sense and peer pressure to get married no matter what. she even looks like a kind hearted lady, but... she's lowkey giving doante (love after lockup) vibes, if you know what i mean. i hope after the netflix documentary at least she got some money out of this insane wattpad fanfic.

There's such a thing as "too old to be stupid". I understand that people can be manipulated but she's basically manipulating herself here. It's ridiculous to be this gullible at this age when she could've found out that this man is capping by a simple Google search on how witness protection works.

mental disabilities exist and often go undiagnosed. they're often lifelong. far more difficult to process things and have appropriate decision making when undiagnosed. i'm not saying that's what is happening here but i think people forget that everyone is different and some people have more difficulties than others. if you're not exposed to different kinds of people in different walks of life it can be difficult to understand other experiences. whatever is happening here is more than just "she manipulated herself". as someone who lived with undiagnosed autism into adulthood i personally can understand why someone can "be so naive or gullible" and the internal experience of what that feels like so i feel for her whether or not there is an identifyable reason beyond environment as to why she's like this. when she was able to identify that something may have been a red flag, she may have been trusting because she could have been more afraid of the alternative. people who are struggling with something undiagnosed can be very afraid of being abandoned. abusers often target people with these social difficulties. i hope sharing a different perspective encourages people to see a different point of view
