I often tour with my wife as pillion, our simple rule regarding luggage is "Lay out all the items that you WANT to take.....then reduce it by 50%". This video is useful, but more as a 'How not to do it'. I would especially avoid wearing a rucksack, it will cause discomfort fairly quickly and will cause you harm should you and the bike part company. I use a Ventura luggage system and some Oxford throw over panniers, it's balanced and can hold enough stuff for two for a 2 week tour, if you are sensible and cut out the unnecessary crap and over the top duplication.

I hate to go long distance wit rucksack. Passanger seat bag is all I need for 10 day trip I normally take once a year. Also when touring have only touring suit, which is comfy and waterproof. Like your videos cheers from Poland ;)

Everybody values different stuff when they tour, take what you want and what makes you happy.. I personally take way too much stuff, but I have the room and it works for me. The only thing I would recommend you look at is Ventura luggage. You can get one large 51litre bag secured to the bike in seconds, and it sits behind you and doesn't affect the handling. I like BMW soft luggage and BMW luggage in general (not cheap but well made and easy to attach) However having looked at your set up, I think the advantages of one large bag would work. I personally found riding with a rucksack draining, even with a Kreiga R35. If you are worried about security you can use a pacsafe wire net and padlock it around stuff. Nothing is going to stop a determined professional thief, but it will put off the opportunists.

quite impressive you fit all that in one small tail bag ! i tend to pack less personal stuff (3-4 shirts, one pair of jeans and sneakers). btw, video didn't show you packing any bike stuff (tools, chain lube, ...etc.) i always end up carrying too much tools myself: 2 cans of chain lube, brake fluid, tire repair kit, tire inflator, whole set of allen keys and sockets, diagnostic cable, multimeter, zipties, spare pieces of wire, superglue or epoxy (needed them last trip when someone's canopy destroyed my bike's front fairing and windscreen)

FAR too much, you need only the BMW bag for a week, leave everything else, you think you need it all but you don't. What is in the blurred out bag? I can't guess unless it's a gun or drugs. Top Tip, in Eurotunnel, I bungee the letter to the screen.

All those sexist stereotypes about the amount of crap women take on a motorcycle trip.... you aren't really busting them here, are you! I mean, Tiffany Coates for example literally rides round the entire world with 3 pairs of knickers, two t-shirts, a sarong & lightweight sandals to wear off the bike when she's not in leathers & bike boots, camping gear & a tiny tool kit, and you carry 3 pairs of high heels, 23 complete outfits, two entire sets of bike gear & two dozen full size bottles of 'miscellaneous stuff' & enough cosmetics to open a beauty salon. I suspect there's a video to be made where you get together with her & she sorts your packing habits out! Your bike will surely handle a lot better without the wardrobe & make-up for a two week fashion shoot strapped to the back!!! If you are going to ride in leathers, carry a boil in the bag oversuit, to put on if it rains, not a complete separate set of bike kit!!! Also, I'm sure there's value in packing for your European riding trip as if there's a chance you might get invited to a formal ball at the British Embassy half way round, but it's a riding holiday, and actually riding with that much crap on the bike plus a fully laden rucksack can't be very much fun, which surely defeats the whole point of doing the trip on a bike? Agggh!

Ken Haylock Yeah, I couldn't last 5 hours driving with a rucksack much less a real long touring trip.
@fat_biker
@fat_biker 7 жыл бұрын
I'm just looking at the detail... I mean, if you fell of wearing that rucksack you'd be wrecked! First, the purple bag. No, you do not need a complete alternative set of riding kit. at all. If you are going to be riding in leathers, carry a goretex oversuit for the rain or get that really posh waterproof leather. But also, make it touring leather with big zip vents & useable pockets as well, not a two piece track suit. Because pockets are useful when touring... Or alternatively wear the textile gear & leave the leathers at home. If your leathers get wet while riding then it'll suck for an hour or two once it stops raining, but carrying 10kg of spare ridig gear all over europe sucks every day. If you finish a day with soggy leathers, it'll suck the next morning but put them on anywat and ride in them, they'll dry out soon enough. Keep that purple bag for if you ever need to take a tent & camping gear, nobody needs to double up on riding gear on a motorcycle tour. That's a massive weight reduction right there. The camelbak doesn't need a giant rucksack, just that little day bag it comes with. Your electronic stuff looks like it could do more while being reduced in size by a few times & doesn't need to be on your body at all, if you landed on it from a high side it could be really very bad. I had the same problem with the bulk of the chargers etc until I worked on rationalising... - it's easy to run USB sockets straight off the bike battery & you can charge things in your tank bag or wherever you prefer on the go. If you want to charge multiple USB devices simultaneously in the evening, just get a single multi-output multi-national USB travel charger & leave all those individual mains & euro adaptors at home. Could you perhaps get a slightly less humungously large selfie stick or is that as unbulky as they get? Spare gloves, good idea, they can go in the little day pack with your camelbak... Also... handbag? It's a motorcycle tour! Just use the bum bag that you replace the rucksack with to carry the visor cleaner & the chap sticks etc. I may be wrong but my thought is that there is no possible social situation mid motorcycle tour where you are likely to be judged for having an insufficiently fashionista approved bag for carrying your tampax, your cash & your phone in of an evening. Maybe as a bloke I missed that meeting... I used to carry a clear visor in a protective visor carrier and I note, since I've already suggested a bum bag, that Oxford do a bum bag with a built in visor carrier for £20. However, my thought would be that a better option is to wear a touring helmet when you are touring, maybe even a flip front lid,. but certainly one with a flip up Top Gun style internal sun visor. Never mind changing at night, it means you can ride from bright sunlight into a tunnel in the Alps and not have to wait for your eyes to adjust before you can see where you are going again... The wash kit seems to be spread about and has duplicates. Stick it in one small bag. And eww... get a pod for the head of your toothbrush at least. Use a small bottle of 2 in 1 shampoo, rather than one bottle of dry shampoo, one of shampoo & one of conditioner. Your hair probably won't all fall out of you use 2 in 1 on it while on the road, it'll all be OK.... Decant the big bottles into little ones, sharpie whats in them onto the little bottles, big glass bottles & the like have no place on the road, if you were struggling to get it all in to a small wash bag you'd have to do stuff like that & it would help you overall. You really don't need 8 pairs of socks & two sets of PJs, do you? How long do you wear each pair of socks? I mean, you have to be a complete diva to change your socks every day while motorcycle touring, and even only wearing your socks for three days at a time , 8 spare pairs givs you more or less a month on the road. My general view on these things is work out how many of a thing I need then add one for luck. For a three week tour if I put a clean pair on when I hit the road, that's 3 spare pairs, one for each week of the tour & one for luck. Not 8. Also, comfort not style for the socks. You won't ever need 8 pairs. At the end of the day if you were half way across Spain and had a 'sock emergency' (like such a thing exists) there are shops, & new socks aren't expensive even in Spain. So just take what you need. Also, PJ;'s? On a motorcycle tour? Sleep in the buff or stick an old t-shirt on if sharing a room with somebody likely to be offended by that. Sacrifice the cuteness of your nightwear to the greater enjoyment of the tour! 5 sets of base layers & 10 t-shirts plus a casual denim jacket? Whaaa? This is overkill. I mean for a casual jacket I might think about a fleece that can actually be worn as a layer under my bike jacket if it gets cold at night riding over a mountain, so dual purpose. And base layers again, dual purpose, they work off the bike if you need a long sleeve top. Also as with the socks, you don't need the european t-shirt mountain, for much the same reason. I took the general assumption from the comments that the big thing you blurred out were your sexy fun time toys & I was about to say 'haven't you ever heard of a bullet vibe, lady?' when I realised it was probably really your underwear. I'm guessing the sock comment also applies :-). With the make up, I bugger all about it but if you can't somehow put together a 'travel kit' that takes up way less space I'd be surprised, KZbin is heaving with makeup tutorials so somebody must have covered making make-up kits smaller for backpackers etc. Or you could... you know... just go au-naturel for the duration of the tour. I mean, it's not like you are a hideous crone without makeup is it... I've never thought 'That S1000RR rider doesn't have make up on.... SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!' etc... Not sure why riding a bike makes you feel unattractive, I think an S1000RR is a fairly impressive accessory on its own... 1 bikini, it's not like you are going to get dinged for wearing the same bikini twice on different days at the pool, one pair of jeans for off bike, plus a set of joggers & maybe a Tiff style saroing, one pair of dual purpose sandals, leave the heels at home! Voila, loads of space!! Also, launderettes... all over europe. Rock up at the end of the day, wash a load of stuff & you are good to go!

Maybe, just maybe, you could go somewhere else and make your OWN video of what YOU want to take on tour, and leave everyone else alone? If when I go somewhere I want to take 6 pairs of high heels and all of my makeup, and I can fit it into my suitcase/bag then it's really only between me and that bag, not you, not anyone else. If I want to wear makeup when I've just finished doing a hot, sweaty activity, then that's up to me. Also, some people enjoy clean underwear and socks (same socks for three days when you're riding a bike all day? You're gross and your feet probably don't thank you) and again, if Jo has the space to take this with her then go her. She's an adult, she takes what she wants where she wants. She's clearly happy with the handling of her bike (also, she's touring, not on a race track mate) with this attached, and has said she needs the stuff she takes. I'm capable on going on holiday with a small carry on bag, but I'm happier if I can take all the bits and pieces I need so that I'm prepared - if I have the space, it's my choice. It's her bike, she's not saying you need a bag of makeup or high heels, but if you want to take them, she's showing you that it's possible. TL;DR Get over yourself, it's not your bike and nobody's forcing you to do shit all.

Hey, I got carried away, OK. But I have relevant experience of turning a sports bike into an inappropriate pack mule - I traded my VFR with the full touring luggage for a new T595 that the dealership sold me buy promising to get the luggage set up fitted. They succeeded, so I had the only T595 with a 3 box givi setup on it. And I used it to go away for work for weeks at a time so it had all my clothes, computer equipment, etc in, just like my VFR used to before. What I learnt was that sticking a tonne of weight on the back of a thoroughbred sports bike screws the handling up, but it's still horribly uncomfortable, more so because it's harder to move around. I survived for a year of all weather riding before sense prevailed & I traded it in on a Sprint ST. Which handled far better with all the crap on than the T595 did, although obviously less well without it, & was a lot more comfortable, especially in Winter. My TL;DR is if you want to enjoy touring on a supersports bike then travel light. If you want to enjoy touring on a motorcycle with your entire wardrobe & Emelda Marcos' shoe collection, use a bike that is better suited to the task, it will be more fun. If you want to tour with all that crap, all you have is a supersports bike and you aren't prepared to make any compromises, take the car., it will be surely be more fun than riding with all that on your S1000RR.

Dude did you not listen to a word Jo said? She clearly stated that she travels 'without compromise' so of course there will be a lot of luggage. Congratulations for being able to travel light, but not all people want/need to do so. Forget the stereotypes as they don't matter, everyone has a choice to ride with or without as much stuff as they want.
