Funny you should mention Katniss. The whistle she and Rue used to signal each other was basically the same as the main theme from the 1968 'Romeo and Juliet' movie directed by Zefferelli, chiefly the song being sung when they first kiss 'What is a youth'? (later also rereleased as 'A Time For Us')

Overall I think this was a good adaptation, and even improved on the original in some places (the "Cool" number, the expanded backstories for the characters, etc). My main complaints are: 1. Not having Tony & Maria sing any of "Somewhere". I liked featuring Rita Moreno, but they could have had her sing the beginning and then have them sing the end as a duet. It would have allowed them to keep the reprise, replacing it with a reprise of "Tonight" just didn't work for me. 2. I wish they'd kept Maria's full speech at the end. And her being given a mourning shroud. Leaving those out weakened the ending in my opinion. For reference, here's her full monologue: "How do you fire this gun, Chino? By pulling this little trigger? How many bullets are left, Chino? Enough for you? Or you? All of you! You all killed him! And my brother! And Riff! Not with bullets and knives! With hate! Well, I can kill now too, because now I have hate! How many can I kill, Chino? How many and still have one bullet left for me?" They cut the middle section for some reason, which is unfortunate, because I think it's the most important part.
@filmfreakbecky2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for all of this information!!😄 wow I agree! That would’ve been even more impactful if they left in that middle section they cut from Maria’s speech! I was already blown away with it and Rachel’s acting especially when she says “I hate now” but the middle part is so important because that’s the harsh truth, they did all kill Tony, Riff, and Bernardo with their hate, ooof, thank you for sharing again! I would’ve never known!!

This is my fave WSS reaction, just FYI with Somewhere, in the original stage show, it's sung by an unnamed girl offstage while a dream ballet happens, and it was changed for the original film so Tony and Maria sung it. I prefer this version. It's exquisite.

YES THANK YOU!!!! Also there are discussions around enjoying this film due to Ansel Elgort. I loved this film for the new voices being heard, and making people aware of the faults in the first film. Rachel Zegler, Ariana Debose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Rivera. They are the main reason I’m so ecstatic over it. These talents being showcased to a large audience is far overdue. We can’t forget Rita Moreno. She is being introduced to a new generation, and her tribulations through Hollywood due to her ethnicity is finally being recognized by a large audience. These are the things that are important. These are the reasons I love this film. Yeah I don’t support Ansel. I send all my love and support to the victims that were brave enough to speak about the assault they experienced (and those who couldn’t speak, this does not demean those who stayed to themselves). I guess I don’t know how to speak on how I love this film, because many are degrading it due to Ansel. But I think there is so much more beauty beyond him and his performance. I don’t want to support a film that casted someone who has grooming, sexual, manipulative allegations. But I want to support these new stars and the great progress since the 1961 film (although it has taken way too long to have proper representation). It is a confusing timeline as apparently they filmed before the allegations occurred, if so I understand why they could not recast him - the amount of time, effort, and money put into that is hard to redo. I just wish people weren’t hating on the film only due to him. What do you think or anyone who chose to read this. How do you celebrate the voices of this film but also make actions that don’t support a predator. I’m having a large internal conflict… lmk y’all.

I agree with your point but I would like to say Ansel was cast in 2018 and the movie was filmed in 2019 which was before all the allegations came out in 2020. I do love this movie but the SA stuff is always in the back of my mind when he’s on screen which is tuff but to enjoy this movie I think you have to really separate the actor from the character. Remember the person on screen is Tony, not Ansel

@@RyansChannel0203 This is true, we can never know. But I personally believe those who say they were harmed. That is my moral standpoint. I'm not sure it will ever be taken to court, just want to support the individuals who spoke out. I'm scared to enjoy this film because of that though. Don't want people thinking because I love it that I disregard victims of any assault (not just in this scenario but every)

I like this one better. I fell in love with musicals because of the original and rewatched it every now and again, but aside from the big four (Tony, Maria, Bernardo and Anita) none of the other characters ever made an impression on me really. I feel like this version gave a little more depth to other characters and made them more memorable. This one also had a representative cast, whereas the original did not...plus the original dubbed the singing voices for some roles and in this one they all sang their own songs. Not to mention the visuals etc. I definitely like this one better. Thanks for making one of the very few tolerable reactions to this movie! I enjoyed it a lot. Poor Chino :(

I get really tired of people hating on Tony for killing Bernardo. The man killed Tony's best friend, and he refused to give Tony a fair chance even though Tony made it clear that he didn't want to fight anyone. Sorry but I really didn't care about Bernardo getting killed. The man was determined to kill a Jet, and he did. Tony didn't want to kill anyone. He wanted a new life, with Maria.
@filmfreakbecky2 жыл бұрын
Ya I was very conflicted how to feel about Tony after that, I was more shocked than anything but kept telling myself he did try ALOT to stop the fight, he tried taking the gun and reasoning with Riff, then reasoning with Bernardo, so he really did try and had his heart in the right place! Bernardo just couldn’t accept peace!! I think it was just even more shocking to me how Maria still loved him right away after killing her brother but hey, I guess they just weren’t that close 😂

You should watch Bollywood movie RamLeela which was an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet but it was so much better because the Romeo and Juliet characters aren't stupid in this movie...there is so much more story in there because the story doesnt happens in one day ..they have to face the consequences of their actions and the story gives perspective of their actions and there is conflict and fights between them and at one point they hate each other for their actions...they give into their family but even then long for each other ...it makes the story so much better...plus the cinematography is just beautiful and the songs are so gorgeous...

I kneeeew you were talking about Maria in your post 😂 But Rachel‘s voice is just.. genuinely out of this world 💔 I was so looking forward to this for such a long time but now I can’t enjoy it because of Ansel Elgort 😑 Never mind him being the weakest link in the cast by far.. who would believe him to have been to prison and all that.. he simply has zero edge to him 🙄 Their relationship is literally the most important part of the story but I just didn’t buy it… Ansel is way too old and the chemistry wasn’t great, in my opinion 😶 The reason it’s so bleak and tragic is because it’s basically a modern version of Romeo & Juliet. But the fact that you never watched the original and auditioned for it 😂😂

I honestly don't know if you're joking or serious about auditioning for these roles. First it was for Evan Hanson (as Evan HIMSELF), now it's for the part of an old lady. If you're joking your delivery comes across as 100% sincere and people in the comments section believe you, based on their reactions. And if you're not joking...then you auditioned for the part of a man and an old lady. You HAVE to be joking right? That humor is SO dry that rather than laugh with you, people will believe it. I also think if you respond to this comment I probably still won't know whether you're joking lol

AHAHAHAHA I love this 😂 I have very dry humour so completely understand you! But no the auditions were absolutely serious! For dear Evan Hansen I wasn’t given much direction because I submitted myself for that one and they allowed me to do whatever I wanted basically, the scenes I was given were the females lines but the songs I was given more liberty to pick whichever and for whatever reason I picked Evans song 😂 and then for this one my agent at the time handed me the scene where Maria and tony are on the train talking and then yup the song “Somewhere”!!! I looked it up after and in the original it is supposed to be sung by Maria and Tony actually so I guess they did change it for this version! Guess I’m just not meant to be in a musical LOL😂
