Also she goes from a nitpicking backseat gamer with pretty much no understanding of games and what makes them great, to a competent and valuable game reviewer on her own right. The later Girlfriend Reviews are not just good fun, but they also count as legitimate reviews, if a little brief. Shelby's insights into what makes a good game are really great, considering that her own gaming career is fairly short.

@@TheWarKeeper Speak for yourself. Immersion is a pretty big deal to a lot of people, and in that regard VR can't be beat. I'd argue that the gameplay looks like that, but, feels much more daunting when you're playing. It certainly is never as hard as Half Life 1 or 2, but it never really claims to be. It still manages to create a novel gameplay experience imo.
@TheWarKeeper4 жыл бұрын
@@Scorch052 To be fair I get it where you come from with the immersion argument, but consider this: If we can immerse ourselves into a story completely by reading a book, we certainly can by playing a game on a monitor too! Humans are pretty good at pretending to be in somewhere or in someone elses shoes, so my argument would be, even if VR adds an extra layer on top of that immersion, for me its not worth it. For me im not feeling VR, at least not yet, not even in this game, you sacrifice too much for the sake of having a screen strapped to your eyes, the entire game of HLAlyx i couldnt help feel this was a VR experience first and a game second. @@khimaros Personally, continuous movement made me feel REALLY sick right off the bat. Especially when I stopped moving I felt like I was about to fall over. Teleportation was fine, but a bit confusing to me (but I literally started HL:A on my second day of owning a VR set), I got disoriented pretty quickly. My favourite was the shift movement. It really helped me avoid disorientation without causing motion sickness.
@Elgsdyr4 жыл бұрын
@@khimaros How did you play it? With teleportation or smooth locomotion? Can't speak about the PSVR (never tried it) but with my Rift it was an adaption process over time as I've always been sensitive to motion sickness IRL. In the beginning I could only play with teleportation and would still start getting slightly nauseous after about an hour's play, but that was gone after a couple of weeks of frequent play. After 3-4 months I could start playing racing games (generally very predictable smooth movement) and after a year I could start using smooth locomotion in general (played through Subnautica in 90+ hours). I've seen many VR users report very similar experiences but of course with variation. Some adapt quickly (within weeks/months) and others (like me) are more slow.

The cost of entry is about 250$ which is fine imo, for me the real problem is finding a big enough room for it!
@jtrimble184 жыл бұрын
$250? The headset alone is $500. It's $1000 for the entire kit, and you WILL need the entire kit. Even after all that, you're still tethered with a cord, and I can tell you from experience that thing constantly gets in the way and immediately breaks immersion.
@cobrakingofeart4 жыл бұрын
@@jtrimble18 use an overhead pulley system connected to the ceiling to get the cord out of the way. don't want holes in your ceiling? use suction cup attachments instead of screws. they're not holding that much weight anyway.

@@jtrimble18 You don't need a Valve Index to play HL:Alyx, a WMR headset from Samsung or lenovo is a perfectly sound investment for vr

Loopyprawn I played half life Alyx completly wireless on the oculus quest using virtual desktop wlan streaming without noticing any latency. You don’t have to use an 1000$ index. The quest is 399,- btw.

Shelby, your monologue at the end was beautiful. I loved how you incorporated Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at the end; it gave me chills.

VR was "the next big thing" when it first came out back in the 90's, but its adoption was very limited back then too, mostly due to the cost. This 2nd generation of VR (Vive, Oculus, etc.) is having the same problem.

you’re existential now? plug a machine learning algorithm like GPT-2 into an image-generation neural network: describe a VR environment in 2 sentences, and it’ll generate it!
