How To: Merge Your Custom Content | The Sims 3

An old tutorial, but still useful! For anyone curious about what DBC stands for: it's DataBase of Content. In the Sims 3 game files, merged content has the file ending .dbc. But it is basically the same as a package, just with a different name that indicates that it contains several merged files in one. We "regular" users usually stick with naming our merged files as .package too because this is what our resource.cfg is usually configured to read! Some info on how s3pe works in the Import as dbc mode vs the regular import as package mode: When s3pe creates a DBC file, it automatically removes redundant files such as the Sims 3 Launcher XML, which is not needed when installing Custom Content as a package anyway but is a leftover from the conversion from Sims3pack to package format. This saves some additional space, thus you should use the .dbc method for merging your packages.

Glad I found this video. My S3 game has been getting worse with the lagging until recently it jumped ship to horrible ... cas was a super sluggish nightmare... game loads and saves were also very long... I dwldd s3pe and followed your video and Voila! I have been playing the fastest loading, saving, cas'ing game in a very long time... Thank You MUCH! :-)

I find that grouping the hairs especially under the retexturer rather than hair creator easier, since its more easily identifiable in CAS the retexturer of the hair you wish to remove. Then when you're out of game, you can narrow it down by retexturer, rather than by name or original creator of the hair :)

Girl I LOVE YOU. I have just merged 5 times and my game is so much faster. It usually loads about 20mins til i can play with it really slow and now it was less than 10 mins and the game is so smooth🙏🏻💕.

I did this. But when I opened a save file, the cc that I merged had gone. For example: my sim's hair style was gone from her head, but was still in cas so I just needed to put it on again. However this became quite frustrating when it came to furniture and makeup because I couldn't rmember which I had used and some things were just gone like I had delteted them? I'm so confused because no one else has commented about this.

Well, thanks to this video I finally gave in and am converting my stuf to packages and merging. You're right, it improves performance so much. I've merged all clothing, hair, accessories and poses. I left patterns and worlds alone, as suggested. That left me with questions: 1. Can/should I convert and merge lots? 2. Can/should I convert and merge downloaded sims? 3. Can/should I convert and merge furniture and other build/buy items? Thanks for a great video. I know it's kind of late to be expecting an answer on an old video, but maybe some other explorer out there can help.

Yes, you can definitely delete the unmerged files, but I would highly recommend that you don't so that if you want to remove like one or two things from the merged file, then you'd have all the rest of your files there instead of having to go in & re-downloading every single CC that you want. Another problem that came up with my pc though was that I accidentally changed the program that open the .package files and now they have the Internet Explorer icon instead of the usual white one. I tried absolutely everything and what I found out was that I needed to change it so that .package files open with no program at all but I just can't get that to work. I really don't mean to bother you with anything else but this got me so frustrated I was about to cry

I'm so sorry! That sounds like it must be really frustrating. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to fix it exactly. Have you tried right clicking on the file & choosing the Open With... option? That's the only way I'd know how to fix it without Googling. I hope you can get it fixed! ♥

I keep my merged files & the original package files separate. But I do save the original package files just in case, but I keep them out of my Mods folder. Hopefully this makes sense! Let me know if you have any more questions! ♥

Finding and downloading content for this game is super overwhelming, I don't even know where to start. Yes and yes and yes! It’ll help your game SO much! Less files for the game to register and read allows for less lag. It won’t make it 100% perfect, but should make it more playable ☺️

Chandler Patrick you have to make the resource file recognize dbc. and you need to install firework for that. i recommend saving it as a package instead it's easier but longer to merge

Hello! I'm super late to the party, just started playing the Sims 3. I have two main questions pertaining to the video. Can you merge store package files? I recently download some store content packages from a Tumblr account and i was wondering if those could be safely merged as well? And then, you said you don't merge mods, defaults and cabinets. Why no cabinets? Does that cause issues?

I love your video, very descriptive. I am having issues importing. I opened s3pe, but when I clicked on the import and dbc when I went into my folders none of my packages were there. I then opened file explorer, and all of my stuff was there, but when I opened it with s3pe it wasn't. Has this happened to you? Do you know how to fix this? Merging can be so frustrating at times. I haven’t had this issue before, but have you checked that the files you’re trying to import are .package files? That’s the only type of files that can be merged through this process. I hope you can get it figured out! ☺️

This video is now 8 years old. 3 years ago I followed her step by step and was able to merge my files and it was HEAVENLY. However,!EA had skuttled Original, and has forced us all to Download their EA launching app . It messed up all of my files. I’ve lost thousands of my CC. I know there’s somewhere in my computer, but they’re just not found where they used to be found and I don’t know how to load them back in without origin or with SC 32 or whatever you wanna call it has anybody had any luck dealing with this?

CC magic puts all tpyes of CC both package and sims3pack into a few packages when you ru nthe game. But alot of people ahev trouble getting ti to work anymore, but ti does it automatically if iyou get it to wor.

For the merging to work properly, your CC will already need to be in .package form. It doesn't work with Sims3packs. But after you merge the files, then it compresses all of your .packages into one .package file. And I have two copies of my CC. The unmerged files are in a separate folder all organized by what they are. Then when I merge the files together, I save them into my Mods folder that's within the game. They're not in folders or anything because it's just the singular merged files. Hopefully that helps you out a bit! ♥

That’s a personal choice, but I prefer keeping a separate folder with all the unmerged files. That way if I need to delete or add something, I have everything there to remerge it.

No, you don't want to have doubles in your game. Merging the CC will be installing the CC into your game. Hopefully that helps you out a bit! ♥

As Brittany said, it does only work with .package files, however you can use another program to make sims3 packs into .packages It's called the Sims 3 Multi Installer, and it's very easy to use. Just look up a tutorial and you're set :) Hope this helped.

I began merging my package files (hair that are altogether 1.02GB big, so obviously I divided them into 6 sections - each one consisting of 20 package files that are smaller than 200MB together) and the funny thing was that once merged they were even bigger than before, for instance the first 20 packages were 180MB big and after merging became 212MB big, is anyone else having the same problem or is it just me? I checked few times with the video and I am 100% sure that I did everything correctly. Thanks for responding in advance (really anyone)

It's not so much about the size, but the amount of packages. The game loads them all individually, so the process of having to recognize multiple files (no matter their size) takes more processing power than one singular file. Plus, 40MB larger really isn't that much at all!

1. Yes you can merge all CC except for counters and mods. Obviously worlds, lots and sim files can’t be merged either. 2. Yes! I do this whenever I need to add new CC to a file that’s already been merged. It will overwrite the original.

Hi. I know this is a pretty old video but I just got a new computer and it has Windows 10 so S3PE doesn't run anymore. I click on it and nothing happens. My old computer was Windows 8. I’ve heard back and forth on whether you should or not. I personally merge any package file patterns and haven’t had issues, but I know some people have. If you really want to, you can and see how your game runs. The big thing would be to never convert patterns from Sims3packs to package files. That can ruin your game. Hopefully that helps! ☺️

What about content that is installed as store content? I have a lot of vehicles downloaded and they count as being from the sims 3 store even though they aren’t. Would I have to redownload them as package files? Also, if you remove CC that your sim is using and then, reinstall it as a combined package, will your sim still have it or will you have to give it to them again? (In my case, vehicles that they are using)

Okay, so I followed the steps and merged all my hair packages. But now my "thesims3-mods-packages-cc-hair" file has all the package files still there with an additional package file named "Hair1" which is what I named the supposed merged file. uninstall and it redownload it. make sure keep it in it's original file, if you take it out or make a copy it wont work. For that just create a shortcut

So is this better and faster than downloading simpack files? I heard packages were slower for your game, so would merging them make packages faster than simpacks?

I can't say for sure, but personally, my game runs SO much smoother with having my packages all merged than if everything was sims3packs. I think it varies game to game, but for me I prefer this method because my game runs so much better! Also, it used to take my game 15 to 20 minutes to load, but now my entire game can load in 5 to 7 minutes ♥

No, I wouldn't recommend it. I don't remember exactly why you can't, I just know it can corrupt you household if you use a particular sim you merged with another sim(s). I've read that some people do merge sims but it's recommended that you don't. Try it and find out what happens I guess ☺

Hi! I have a question I did everything and then I get a package file called (what I named it) with the merged cc and stuff but then all the cc is still in a line but is it supposed to be a folder? Plz help

I know I'm a bit late, but you can go ahead and put those files into a backup folder, just in case you want to delete something later, or want to add to that merged file. All you need in that folder (in your game) is the completely merged file. :) Hope that helped.

Thanks, this helped so much! I think I'm still confused about having a merged file for example, [clothes]teenfemale and wanting to add a new file to the merged file if I download a new shirt or something. Do I just merge the new file with the merged package file [clothes]teenfemale.package?

It's a bit confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it it's super easy! So first off, it's super important to have a separate folder that has all of your unmerged CC in it. I have a Sims 3 Custom Content folder that has multiple folders within it that are all of the separate package files that I've downloaded. They're organized by category & it just keeps everything super organized & simple. This also helps me remember exactly which files are in the merged file. So when I download new CC, I add it to my unmerged folder & place it in whatever category/folder it needs to be in. So if I downloaded a new shirt for my teen girls, it's of course going to be placed in my Clothing/Female/Teen folder. Now I already have a merged file called ClothingFemaleTeenShirts or whatever lol. So to add my new CC to it, I just place that package file into the correct folder & then go through the whole merging process that I showed in this video. I name the new merge file the same name as the old one & then a little pop up appears asking if I want to overwrite the old package. I click yes & then it does the whole merging thing. After it's all done, you're good to go! You don't have to do anything else. I personally don't know how to be able to just add the package file to the already merged file & I'm not sure if it's even possible. That's why I just redo the whole merging process for that specific category. Sorry for the huge message! lol But I wanted to make sure that I explained it well enough! So I followed your video to a T my game loads smoothly and everything is faster than before but I have a slight problem and I don’t know if anyone has had this before where I converted and merged patterns but now when I try to enter create a pattern it gets stuck on “materializing materials” if anyone has had this problem and fixed it please please please let me know, I’m in the process of moving all my patterns which I detected through Delphys dashboard but i don’t know if it will help
