Its funny they say all this, because foreigners feel the same about japanese girls when abroad. So many women are so fashionable and grateful. Even the girls in the interview are more dressed up than most people I know on a daily basis!

I think if all the people that surrounded me every day had much of a similar look it would get incredibly boring quickly, I find beauty in almost all types of people and can understand why we are seen as exotic and different than what they normally see from day to day. I can also understand how seeing western movies can influence thoughts on beauty, and even in their own media when it comes to many of their own entertainment a lot of the characters definitely have a more western look about them.

Probably not true, should go and find out yourself. I keep having to explain to people who aren't white why they are so close to us. Just read history, it'll help you understand why we're close. It has a lot to do with our influence with them. Be it in history or pop culture. Japan at one point only traded with European people. The Dutch were the first group that brought them knowledge and literature. We've been open to trading with them for a very long time now. We're responsible for their economic boom they had after the war. I'm not sure why non-whites don't understand WHY they feel this way towards us. But history and culture will explain the why, if you care to understand it or read about it. Latinos, Africans, or Arabs have little to do with their country through history...why they don't care as much. Maybe if you were the ones trading with them for many, many years and influencing them...they'd be more talkative about you. But it's not the case. They adopted many western ideas and were helped by Europeans/Americans. Can you blame them for feeling that way after understanding this? They've more exposure to us.

I dunno I went to Japan recently a few weeks ago. I'm Mexican I didn't feel treated differently, except two instances, when I went to the country side, people be staring lol. I don't blame them, it was in the middle of no where. Another instance is when I went to a event our school did to talk to Japanese students, in the end my group they only took pictures with the white girls. Oh well. But besides that my overall experience of Japan was amazing,the people were extremely kind and super considerate of other people. the only times I got real trouble was with other foreigners.

In my experience in East Asia, yeah, when people say foreigners, they tend to usually think of white people first. Where I live in China, usually 'foreigner' will mean white first, and then they will say something more specific if they mean a foreign person of another race. It only changes if there is a foreign person of a different skin color than white in front of them.
@alicewong9935

I actually really hate how we’re all just called foreigners, all lumped together, that includes other Asians, whites, blacks, Hispanics, arabs, there’s no way you can have an opinion on “foreigners” because it includes everyone, and every race and culture is so different, if you really want to know what Asians think about a certain race, ethic group or culture, you have to specifically name the group you want their opinion about. I really hope the term “foreigner” dies soon, I know it basically just used to mean white for thousands of years, because we were the only different race they knew existed, as we occasionally brought trade ships by to buy and sell goods with each other, but it’s 2020, they know other demographics exist now, and I’m not a “foreigner” I’m Russian and I live here, you may not erase my identity and lump me in with everyone else that I have nothing to do with, the world is not Japanese, and than “other”.

@OllamhDrab
@OllamhDrab 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ssookawai I wouldn't say that, actually, (you might want to be careful in India or a few other places,) but certainly Japan seems to actually like it when we like their clothes and stuff, in general. And they love some of our stuff. Part of it is they never really had their own garb and things *taken away* from them like some places that were really under colonial rule might have, (including Native American cultures) so there's less possessiveness about a lot of things. (I guess as long as you're at least trying to do it properly, I figure.) There's kind of a lot of love between various American and Japanese car scenes: we love a lot of their stuff, they love a lot of our stuff, different spins on each others' stuff we might cook up sometimes go back over the ocean and cross-pollenate again, ...and yeah, it's a much healthier attitude than, "Eh, all that sucks , only this is any good, 'or 'You can't do it like that, you poser," etc etc. Seems to be similar with the Euro scene. Things can be shared without it being about 'taking something away,' but it does depend a fair bit on history and prevailing attitudes. When Japanese gals wear Western clothes, maybe it's just kinda clothes to us, but sure, people dress nicer than I have in quite a long time, (being an aging car gal that who knows what they'd make of over there these days,) ...but a lot of Japanese people really like it when we join in the traditional garb thing. And it's kinda nice when you're watching videos of Japanese car meets, and you're like, "Hey, someone over there really wanted the green Dodge Dart like we used to do up as kids while maybe some was reading Initial D, or something." That feels nice, ...it's like by extension someone *likes* you. Real cultural *exchange.* THe world could use more of that right now.

In China most people thought I was from the Middle East, even though I'm very, very pale and a bit tall for a woman from that country (5'7). They were shocked to learn that I'm indeed from Germany. No, not so much natural blonde, blue eyed beauties here. Well, not so much as they think oviously.

Ahhh.... as a white women living in Japan these comment sections always get on my nerves, the term “foreigner” may mean that in translation, but it’s not really how it’s used, but of course most people in the comments are missing the cultural context to how the word is actually used, its typically used to refer to racial minorities that live within the country, both on TV and in casual conversation, it doesn’t usually mean people who don’t live here to them, (but of course you would have to live here for years to get that) just think of the word as racial minorities instead, and than you’ll have a better understanding, because we Europeans are the biggest visible racial minority group in the country, and we always have been, we are the only outside race with any history here whatsoever, so yes it makes sense that they think about us, in the same way white Americans would think of black people before Asians when hearing “poc” or “racial minority” it’s just a numbers thing, chill.

I went to Japan for a couple of years when I was 23, I'm 48 now. I'm a petite person, 4 ft 9 inches, white and I adopted the more conservative fashion while I was there. I remember entering a store, walked to the employee, and said: Make me look like you. I blended in really well, everywhere, including work. Female coworkers were very engaging with me, and men seemed curious but not assertive. I had a black friend, she was extremely brilliant, joyful, the sweetest person ever, and yet...she was utterly ignored by everyone. She left a few months before the end of her contract, tired of racist-like comments and stares. She was not even greeted when entering stores etc. It's such a sad thing... Because I was white, I was treated like a princess and they were very kind to me. And on the other hand, they were assholes with my friend. It broke my heart back then, i tried to interfere but it was not received. Yet, I have very fond memories of my years there, probably the best of my whole life. I just wish they would have more openness toward all foreigners, no matter their color.

Since most of the foreign movies, especially older ones, have mostly white tall people, and movies/TV shows used to be the main channel where Japanese saw foreigners, it makes sense they associate that with foreigners mostly. My MIL is always surprised when I say that there are darker foreigners, not everyone is blonde, fair and lighteyed. And then she’s like, yeah, right, there’s Obama or Johnny Depp, etc., so there ARE darker ones around. But the first image that comes to their head is someone like Nicole Kidman or Jude Law. Plus peoples’ admiration for things/qualities they don’t have themselves. Like how most curly people have wished to have straight hair and vice versa. You are attracted to opposites, that’s a human trait.

When these people are generally talking about foreigners in Japan they're probably talking about the image that Cathy is portraying ( not that there's anything wrong with her image she's great!). Notice how a lot of Japanese people talk about pale skin, blue eyes, light hair etc Just being foreign wont make you popular in Japan, and it may even make you popular in a negative sense. I used to live in a smaller city in Japan where there wasn't a lot of foreigners, I dye my hair bright blue and I'm a bit more colorful in my fashion. Over time, what I wore and how I acted became a lot more conservative and I think I appeared a lot more approachable. Though I didn't always like it, it was nice to have the attention sometimes but sometimes I wish I had dyed my hair black and tried to blend in a bit more. But I'm glad Japanese people generally view foreigners in a positive light, there's nothing more I could ask for :D

Lots of people especially on the trains, restaurants and bus stared a lot (not sure if in a good or bad way) but got nice compliments from some folks. Saw foreigners from so many different countries (based off the languages I heard). Didn’t think about being popular or noticed. Just wanted to enjoy my trip which I did and visit my girls who live in Shibuya. All us “foreigners” going or planning to visit there, just go and have fun and know with millions of people there, not all think the way these girls do.

In my opinion foreigners are popular because when they come to Japan they are the new thing. And yeah, everyone is so curious and they want to know about you, but... maybe being different isn’t truly the main reason (because that will happen when any person travels to a foreign country). I think it’s because they have a sort of stereotype in their heads about us when we are just normal people 😂 Yeah some of us are really outgoing, charismatic and have that "cool" aura, but like I said before we also sleep, eat and breath. So maybe once people around start knowing you well and get used to your presence, you may stop being that popular 😂

This video made me Smile, Laugh, and Blush all at the same time. It is very adorable of how innocent there thoughts are of us foreigners. I'm from a Southern family, and we don't get dressed up that often. Honestly if it was socially acceptable for me to wear my pajamas to work...I would do it. Most Women were i'm from, tend to be very laid back and Wild. We do crazy stuff like jump from cliffs into the water. We put petal to the metal when driving our go carts downhill, and yes we do sometimes get injuries and such. Even tho we may seem Elegant and such from another perspective, were really not. Lol We most likely only come off as elegant, because a lot of us don't care. So when you are nervous and are worried what people are thinking of you. Don't worry, because those people are probably doing the same thing, and there to worried about what you might think of them. Basically its all about confidence. Do stuff that gives you confidence. Or watch videos of people trying to look the way you already do. xD Thats a real confidence booster right there.

petersl The thing is that in the US, white people used to dress as poc only to mock them. Poc had to assimilate into white culture, so now poc are using Moana etc to create sorta like poc-centered spaces where they can express their poc-ness w/o the societal pressure to be white. If a white person then indulges in the same methods they use to cope, it feels like sb intruding on the safe space they’ve created for themselves with the very intention of having it to themselves and themselves only. Versus in Japan, native Japanese people are the leading group of people, nobody is forcing Japanese people in Japan to assimilate to another culture or making fun of their traditional outfits like it is done to poc in the US.

I love how foreigners say how perfect Japanese people look like dolls and at the same time Japanese people say we look like dolls. It’s so wholesome. ❤️

Japanese girls look like dolls without even trying. Also Japanese girls: foreign cosplayers look like dolls... What? Also, I loved how all of the girls asked were kind of focused on the visual aspect, while the older woman at the end actually spoke about a cultural difference. Loved her

'Foreigners look more mature...' Like yeah, we look like old saggy bags of skin, while they oftentimes look completely wrinkle-less...Like damn... That's a whole lotta unfair

When I think of Japanese girls, I think of them as petite and delicate, the kind of girls who make men feel manly. I felt like a giant war horse when I was stationed there and did have a Japanese man say I was “very beautiful, but scary.” I asked him to clarify and he said that American women have many opinions and confidence and that was intimidating. I think there is beauty in every culture. Is funny how we always want what’s different than us.

Not that it matters to me as a guy, but still, I gotta say, I'm kind of confused, if you're gonna ask Japanese people about what foreign girls need to do to be popular in Japan, then why the heck would you only ask women about it, that's just plain weird... O_o There was like one guy in your entire video, and 9 women. Surely it would be a heck of a lot more productive to focus mainly on asking guys about it, or at the very least make it 50-50? In your video where you ask Japanese people what guys need to do to be popular in Japan, you mostly ask girls about it, which makes perfect sense. And predictably, many (though not all) of the answers in this one are surely less productive to a girl than the answers in the guy version video was to guys, where you got tons of advice on how guys should dress and act to be attractive to Japanese girls. Surely foreign girls would like to know the same thing, i.e what they should do if they want to be popular with Japanese guys? Just saying.

If you look back in the catalogue of Ask Japanese videos, you’ll notice that videos are often separated into we ask “girls” this question, and “guys” this question. This question may be asked to more people in a later video.

From what I’ve learned in America men like woman who listen carefully and observe small details, attend to them and can handle situations well. Also comfortable when talking to them.

"Remember that the nail that stands out gets hammered in." When they talk about being famous and standing out in Japan, I remember that, but I don't know if it makes sense in this context of the video.
