Thalira's handmaiden, the woman in purple, is played by director Lennie Mayne's wife, Frances Pidgeon. She appears in a later story also directed by her husband. It happened a few times that family got bit roles in Who~oh the nepotism. LOL.

33 years later, Martha Jones would burn the Tenth Doctor with a remark about how he was taking her to all the same places as he'd taken Rose (in this case, New Earth), so it's interesting to see Pertwee's Doctor dragging the young Sarah Jane off to an old haunt. And, from a modern fan's perspective, I suspect Liz Sladen's relative youth in these episodes really hits home how long this franchise has been operating.

It's interesting how, despite having been part of the Federation for 50 years, Peladon hasn't really changed at all, for all King Peladon's hopes. Superstition is still rife, and the priests and politicians are still more powerful than the monarch - at least the Queen does show a bit of spunk here, but she still tends towards the weak-willed end of the personality spectrum, like her father. I was slightly surprised you think Eckersley is fit - it must be that shiny leathery outfit he's wearing! The name is very Yorkshire, though the accent is not. Donald Gee, who plays him, was previously in The Space Pirates, and there are a couple more notable returning guest actors. Rex Robinson, playing the head badger, was the scientist Tyler in The Three Doctors, and Ralph Watson, the hot-headed badger, was Captain Knight in The Web of Fear.
@johng58594 жыл бұрын
The Noisy Spectator There have been some superficial changes, I grant you, but the structure of Peladon society has not changed fundamentally, when you might have expected more of a shift after 50 years of Federation membership. However, I think you hit the nail on the head when you point out that changing things too much would have forced the story to embrace a whole new dynamic that would not have felt very "Peladon", and would probably have diluted too many of the elements that made the first story appeal to viewers, which is not what the production team wanted.

Eckersley is played by Donald Gee, who was previously in The Space Pirates with Patrick Troughton. Gebek, the miner who isn't an asshole, is played by Rex Robinson, who was previously Dr Tyler in The Three Doctors and Ettis, the miner who is an asshole, is played by Ralph Watson who previously looked a lot more dishy as Captain Knight in The Web of Fear.

Yes, I agree with you that Technician Eckersley is a suspicious dude. I wouldn't trust him either. And I suspected him of being up to something shady when I first saw this story. (Obviously I won't confirm or deny if I was right, as that would be spoilery.) It's nice to see Alpha Centauri again. The only character other than the Doctor (and Aggedor), who was in both Peladon stories.

Yes, there's the obvious reason why Dr Who keeps coming back to Miners at this time: they were in the news. On 28th February 1974 (less than a month before this story began broadcasting), Prime Minister Edward Heath laid his last card on the table and called a General Election. His administration had started with high hopes of Britain solving its economic ills through membership of the European Economic Community (which we joined on 1st January 1973) but instead had found itself bogged down in continual confrontations with the National Union of Mineworkers and the demands for higher pay (a situation compounded by the recession now sweeping Europe in the aftermath of the oil-producing Arab states - OPEC - cutting production in retaliation for the west's support of Israel in the Yom Kippur War). The upshot was black-outs and disruption, which the government sought to offset by introducing restrictions, ranging from early close-downs on TV (which probably explains why I'm here!) to a three day working week. It mattered little. But if you want to know the result, it's worth watching to the end...

You really should listen to "The Prisoner of Peladon" at some point. Its a Big Finish audio story that takes place in between these two Peladon TV stories. It stars David Troughton as King Peladon and gives fans a look at what he got up to 30 years apx after the Doctor first met him in "Curse". It's good fun.

Many actors have had to adapt their accents or voices to fit the demands of work (I seem to recall Ysanne Churchman on an afternoon programme when I was young, briefly talking about Alpha Centauri, with a clip from this story) and even the likes of Rex Robinson (born in Derbyshire) and Elizabeth Sladen (a Liverpudlian by birth) at least had to fit into 'BBC English' for certain parts. However Donald Gee (Eckersley) must have been pretty glad not to be landed with something like the transatlantic drawl he had to adopt as Major Ian Warne in 'The Space Pirates' - it's not as if the Americans even watch the show...

@@jeanlafayette7152 Yes, I know. I relistened to what she said at the beginning (about the setting) and the end (about the number of episodes). I must have read the original comment as "more use" = "further use" / "another use" rather than "greater use" / "longer use", but it could be either. I wonder. Would there be a negative correlation between length and perceived quality of Pertwee stories? And how aware are we of which are 4 and which are 6? The ones that I'm sure are 4 would be some of the best-regarded-"The Time Warrior", "The Three Doctors", "Terror of the Autons", "Spearhead from Space". However, so many of the others I'm just not sure of; the longer ones don't register as different from-or more special than-the shorter ones. Which would make the longer ones drag. (I think I'm right that "Colony in Space" and "The Mutants" are 6. ("Colony" has some lovely actors; I might like it better if it were shorter.) On the other hand, the T Baker 6-ep stories are different. For the first time-in fact _only_ time in 20th-C Doctor Who-we get season finales, and the longer duration is part of that. (At the same time, they give up much of the economy of scale by being constructed as 2+4 or 4+2. So new sets and new costumes are needed when we move from Antarctica to the Home Counties, when the focus changes from Li Hsen Chang to Magnus Greel, and when the Sontarans take over from the Vardans.)
