I have a mystery snail tank. I spend a lot more time watching this tank than I thought I would. You do not need to sniff to find out if alive. Watch for 24hrs if still in same spot remove from water. Hold for 30seconds. If it is dead the smell will find you in less than 15 seconds. Do not sniff up close. If dead you will regret it.

@@valerieodonnell6764 They can escape, but don't assume they're dead if you find them out of tank. Put them back in, it may still recover. They seal up and go into hibernation mode when they get too dehydrated from being out, but can breathe air. Mine loved to escape even when I tried to cover gaps, they can push and lift things. I'd follow a slime trail and find them and plop them back in.

A couple of years ago I had a BIG mystery snail, in my country we actually call them apple snails, so I named him apple juice. Even my parents loved him, and he loved living in my goldfish tank. He parasnailed all the time and it was so fun to watch. When I cleaned the tank he would come up to me and nibble on my hand, even climb all over my arm. In the end, he started acting slower and eventually passed away. I still miss him, great pet and awesome lil buddy.

Actually mystery snails are a type of apple snails, what we call apple snails are referring to the kind that get gigantic. A few years ago (and longer), pet stores didn't know the difference so when I got 4 snails for my aquarium when 8 was still living at home, two only grew to max 2 inches but the other 2 yellow ones grew GINORMOUS! The whole family was amused at the playful antics of all my snails at the time. Apple snails are now actually against the law to sell, although I don't see how it actually is upheld and most people don't know the laws and wouldn't know the difference. It's illegal because in recent years apple snails IN THE WILD are big, huge invasive species, actually in the top ten, something like that. They eat all the natural flora and clog up the waterways. They also are warned not to handle wild ones because of the potentially deadly liver fluke they carry and the fact that their egg clusters have a neurotoxin . I know, I know, bad PR for your little buddy, R.I.P., I think they are wonderful animals, anyway!
@Truffle153

@@Truffle153 that's because it's probably another species. Wikipedia says the invasive one is Pomacea diffusa, not Pomacea bridgesii. Idk, that's what I think after reading the page ahout pomacea bridgesii. Both of them are called apple snails, but the wiki don't say anything about it being an invasive species.

I love mystery snails, but I consider them as pets more than cleaners. They are very entertaining! I have had trouble keeping them with certain fish (like a feisty betta) because their feelers get mistaken for live food. In snails vs. shrimp, I'm definitely on team snail. Tight lid is absolute! One of mine seemed content for several months but decided to go for a walk about a couple weeks ago. Got out through a very small space just the same size as her shell. Didn't see for a couple days but grandson saw it behind the tank under the stand. Luckily we have carpet in that area and she wasn't broken. She was all closed up and I assumed dead but no smell. Placed her in the quarantine tank and the next day she was all over the place and already loading eggs. Decent algae cleaner but only in the areas they decide to roam over. Not going to replace your regular maintenance for those folks who are hoping and praying... Nope. They really do love eating green beans with no salt and the snello found in recipes on many KZbin channels. Thanks Irene for another cool video 😎

i never meant to get a mystery snail, but I accidentally got one with a plant i bought. it grew to an amazing size and l loved watching her so much, I ended up naming her (Gabriella). she also laid eggs once or twice (when i accidentally had imported another snail), but nothing ever came of it as i just left it be and she had put them too close to the cover lights and they dried out. she also got quite old, but when she finally died (when lifting her out she literally fell out of her shell... not fun...) i was so sad about it, i never got a new one.

Aw sorry to hear that. Just so you know, if she 'plopped' out of her shell when you lifted her, she was already passed. So just in case if you worried about that, you needn't worry bc snails don't detach unless they're already dead. But I'm sorry you experienced that, but glad you got the chance to enjoy a cool companion like the mystery snail

I have 100s of mystery snails, I originally bought 7. I have them in every aquarium and in a couple tub/ponds. last year I learned a valuable lesson, I had 35 or so in a ten gallon tank with a colony of scuds I use as feeders for my fish. I dump veggie scraps in the tank and the snails and scuds voraciously consume it. but last last May I dumped a handful of rainbow chard in the tank and 2 days later I smelled something awful.every mystery snail in the tank was dead ! after some research , chard has a lot of copper in it, I assume this is what killed the snails. surprisingly the scuds were not affe ted by the chard or all the dead snails.

There is one, easy, surefire way to tell if your Mystery Snail is dead. It also works perfectly on Assassin Snails who may have gone dormant after a big meal, or Nerites who are resting after failing to right themselves. Step one: remove snail from tank. Step two: hold snail to your nose and inhale deeply. If after "Step two" your last meal has remained fully inside of you: "Put... zee snail... back!"

In my limited experience, the nerite snail I had was a much better algae eater. You could see paths where it had eaten! I haven't seen that with the mystery snail. But as you say, the mystery snail is way more entertaining! I've seen it do the dive-bombing thing, but tonight it did something amazing: it slowly peeled itself off the side but instead of retreating into the shell while falling, it kept its body out and it looked like it was sky diving! (!!!) And instead of falling to the bottom, it landed gracefully on a leaf. I couldn't believe it! So much fun! And yes, they're fast as far as snails go. Thanks for the tips on what to feed it. Glad I came across your page!

Even though they eat the decaying plant matter and some algae, I like feeding my mystery snails blanched carrots, canned green beans, a piece of cucumber or zucchini, and the snails will slide up the glass to come take a green bean. They sometimes climb on the green beans to ride down like a surfboard which is fantastic. Sometimes they go into a sort of torpor, but if its not stinky, its fine. To help prevent pitting or shell problems I provide a piece of tums periodically, and the snails will either eat the tablet directly or absorb the calcium via the water as it dissolves. The snails are really entertaining to watch!

A mystery snail eats the same as "pest" snails. When hungry, they will eat life plants and do a little gardening. It is just that they are bigger than "pest" snails, which somehow makes them more attractive to people. There are multiple species that are called mystery snails though. Some are more omnivorous, while one species actually eats algae and life plants. And that is not the one you have. Bladder snail are not really a pest at all. The same goes for the other snails that are considered pests. Their number are perfectly balanced by the amount of food available to them. So, if you have an explosion of snails, that is because you have too much food for them. Most people overfeed the fish, which leads to food sinking to the bottom. Also sick leaves or dead leaves are eaten. All snails eat dead fish and the shells of shrimps. And some species even eat detritus. So, unclean and unhealthy tanks equal loads of snails. This way snails prevent peaks in nitrite or ammonia/ammonium. They prevent your fish from dying. I breed multiple species of snails, which include the "pest" snails. The tanks they are in are so clean and so healthy, that some people ask whether the tank is new and the plants are plastic. Nah, I just have some free gardeners. I love all snails. I really dislike the misunderstandings of snails. They are so much more than just cleaners. Did you know that they warn you if the water is changing into unhealthy water? If toxins build up (like ammonium/ammonia, nitrite or other like chlorine (they do not respond to nitrate)), the snails go sit above the waterline. Snails are even more sensitive for bad water than fish. So they are the first to move out of the water. If you see them all sitting above the waterline, you know something is off. Fish don't get affected yet, so you are in time to respond to the snails behavior and prevent fish from dying. I don't know, but how can you hate something that is a gardener, fishkeeper and chemistry set in one? You can only hate what you don't understand. If you learn more about snails, you will stop hating them and even start to appreciate them. Anyway, thanks for giving some snails the spotlight though. I hope one day you will make a video about how useful "pest" snails are.

Snails don't maintain their shells, ever. They only grow it out where the opening is, so that's where the minerals are going. In softer water the minerals do get dissolved into the water eventually so there may be erosions, and this varies with different species. But most damage still seems to be wear and tear from dragging around wherever.

1:54 awesome video! I had a bladder snail explosion and tbh I haven’t been able to correct it myself with home remedies so I’ve order a few assassin snails.. one for each and if they get along with the non-hem mysteries then I’d love to have both! 💚

I have a golden mystery snail in a 2.5 gallon tank with a female koi betta, and I had no idea that thing sticking out was a siphon. I thought it was a parasite 😂. I had an “infestation” of brown algae in my tank, and he took care of it in only a couple of days. So personally, from my own experience, they are great with algae. But also I’m relatively new to aquarium things, so I could be very wrong.

Nerites love eating wood, they shouldn't starve if you have some, as the surface of the wood softens over time they eat it and keep it looking new. They will still eat algae on the glass.

Thanks for the video. For the longest time I would go into the tank to turn mine over since I didn’t know they could right themselves. A few times I thought they were dead, but by the next day they had moved to the other side of the tank and were doing just fine…go figure. 😂

She has a tank of assorted tetra fish and accidentally got a mystery snail she named (Pearl) a few months ago she through pearl was dead but turns out she was just sleeping funny or was weak so she put in some stabilizer and she was much better in a few days

I thought snails were yucky but finally got one mystery snail for my Betta tank...well, I soon realized she was so cool:) They are really fast and entertaining. I heard they don't eat the live part of plants, just the dead parts...Not true!! WI have a water sprite floating and I watch the snail chow down on the nice green leaves...munch munch munch. They are still cool so it's all good:)

I really like mystery snails for keeping the tank clean and they are fun to watch. Nerite snails are best at algae, though you'll need a lot more of them. I have had both kinds find their way to the floor, so tight lids are a big plus.

Huh. My mystery snail is kind of slow. And I have guppies and a betta fish, all of which are VERY voracious eaters. Do you have tips for how to stop my guppies and betta from eating everything? And what supplements should I give my snail since it almost never gets leftover food?
@PureLove_X
@PureLove_X Жыл бұрын
What I do is I throw in slowly sinking food for the fish and while they are distracted I throw in algae waffers or whatever for the mystery snail to eat. I always do it on opposite ends of the tank and sometimes I'll even move the snails closer so they have a better chance of getting it first. You can also throw it in at night when the fish are sleeping and the snails will usually find it then.

I know Cory from Aquarium Co-Op likes to feed his snails the zoo med banquet blocks because they have calcium in them.
@BanthaWorship
@BanthaWorship Жыл бұрын
So I start the voracious eaters first, with a floating food, then feed the bottom dwellers their sinking pellets, then add a bit of boiled spinach or peas (removed from the skin) and the snail gets most of the fresh veg because everyone else is mostly full by then. I do this once per week, day before water change day!

I’ve had nitrite snails for years. You may want to make sure your water parameters are good and add some calcium to your water. You may want to try adding some crushed coral to your filter if you have a HOB. I’ve also used crushed egg shells in a media bag

For my softer water, I use som dryed crushed organic eggshells. I dropp it between the plants, so it disappear from sight. Snails will find it and leftovers will slowly dissolve into the water where also plants, shrimp and fish will benefits from it. Maybe like half a eggshell for a 10 gallon once every 1-2 month. I think my spixisnails can beat your mysterysnail in a race. 😄👋🇩🇰🇺🇸😊

With the sleeping vs alive thing. The easiest thing to do is look at their shell. If it looks very dull in color and you haven’t seen any movement grab a net and scoop it out cuz if it’s been sitting there for a day or two the snails body will fall out really fast and smell like rotten shrimp. Or another method (that I don’t recommend all the time) is just pick them up and hold them for a minute out of the tank .older snails get bloated as they get older. Look at them if you see them breathing very hard put them back fast.

I have a question about live plants. So I'm starting my very first 5 gallon live planted tank right. I'm not going to house any fish in it for a while cause I wanna focuse on the plants. So how do I get nitrates/nitrogen for the plants in there if I'm not keeping any fish? Now, granted i am going to use easy green fertilizer, but i know there still is supposed to have some nitrates in there, so? Anyone have suggestions:)

If you need something to get a job done, pick something else. If you like something that's entertaining and munches on things around the tank, then go mystery snail. They definitely aren't efficient algae eaters. They prefer a more diverse diet. The other main thing is not to house them with anything that will nip their antennae. They can regrow, but part of the fun of a mystery snail is when they are free to let their antennae wave without fear.

i can't stand the eggs dotting the tank. but i don't think it's my nerite, necessarily.... because what keeps growing is bladder snails. : ( just got a yoyo loach, hoping he'll eat them to oblivion. my mystery snails got WAY big. 2" is a lot of snail. i think the one in my 5g is a female. just saw, so TWICE now, an *absolutely disgusting egg sack* up in the hood of tank. it's like fingers of coral, sickly offwhite. (the texture even through thick paper towel was*disgusting!* i was about to hurk getting rid of it the first time. now it's there again. i think i'm done with snails. D:
