I grew up with a Tervuren! I was only 8 when we got her, she passed last summer at the age of 15. She would go running in the mornings with my dad, sometimes as long as 7 miles at a time. She did agility with my older sister once a week and they would travel to competitions (she always won best in breed, lol!!) When my sister went off to college, she was 6 or 7 and not competing agility anymore, so my mom started doing scentwork with her to keep her mind active. I was the youngest so I took up the mantle of teaching her tricks, even when I was just a kid and barely knew what I was doing she would pick new commands up within just a few days. I remember teaching her to walk on my left or right side so that she would be away from the traffic on busy roads, or to move out of the way of passersby. I was so proud of how quickly I was able to teach her something more "complicated" like that. I'm now living in my first apartment and working as a dog groomer and I know my lifestyle just will never keep up with a shepherd dog - I'm a lazybones and a homebody. But I will never forget growing up with Dakota

We had this breed, only she was grey instead of brown for some reason, breeders did not know why. Loved playing in water, pick up rocks to let them roll into water, carry 2 meter stick and jump over the fence with it. Vet was surprised she still had teeth at 11. She spooked one of my cousin once by running out from a bush in full speed, never heard anyone scream wolf that loud.
@Airyllish
@Airyllish 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know how long ago you had your grey, but your breeder SHOULD have known why if they were actually part of the breed's local club and also had any knowledge of the breed at all. I'll answer your comment here so that you can learn, and maybe other people too! Grey Tervuerens are simply caused by a recessive gene in the breed that determines coat colour. They aren't traditionally considered part of their breed standard, which is why you don't commonly see them, and breeders don't go out of their way to try and breed them. Other than their grey colouration rather than fawn, they're identical to other Tervuerens. Many Tervs today still carry that recessive gene in their ancestry, so it's entirely possible for two red Tervs to wind up with a grey puppy! This is basic information that a knowledgeable breeder should really know about. I'll admit, as somebody in the breed for 21 years, it worries me to know that they didn't. All's well that ends well though, I suppose.

@@SiviRabbitLady Disheartening to hear, as they still definitely should have known. However, at least now you have the answer to that question at the very least! It was simply a case of a recessive gene that both parents had being passed down to that puppy. :) It's very uncommon for two red parents to produce a grey, but also perfectly genetically possible as long as those parents both carry the recessive gene. Nothing unusual about it.

@@sycofya1677 just as an fyi for others at least, 1 professional dental cleaning by a vet is good for most dogs accompanied by brushing the teeth 2-3 times a week. We shared our home with a Terv for several years. Ironically, when my father was posted to NATO HQ in Belgium, we actually took him back to the town of Tervueren for a couple of years. He was probably the least fastidious dog we've ever had, but his intelligence was unmistakable. Also, his herding instinct was overwhelming; we used to joke that when we took him for walks in the nearby park, you could always tell who else had a Terv at the end of their leash without seeing the dog... because their arm would be going back & forth from left to right as the Terv "herded" his "flock". :-) Unfortunately we lost him to cancer after he reached only about half his normal life expectancy, but we still talk about him frequently.

Don't underestimate them. Escape artist, yes. Can pick out the ball you just hid in a pile balls. Love to play prank me, prank you. Including the dog catcher. The dog catcher called him the Black Devil Dog. I don't know about other Tervurens but he loved getting brushed. Baths no way. Also he would herd and guard children. But the problem with that was if a nip on the butt was what was needed to get their attention. They got it. But don't threaten the children. They are always alert.

It happened so often that the teachers would bring him treats and water before he head back home. I can remember sticky taping paper together to make a saddle and get on his back like a horse. He was my best friend growing up and this bought back so many memories because I haven’t seen one since I also got into the local newspaper with him one day because he was such a beautiful dog

Hey, this is my breed of dog! I've owned and trained this breed since I was 9, and I'm 30 now. I've worked with Belgian Shepherds (all four varities) all my life, and I'd like to add some facts that you didn't mention, because this is a wonderful breed of dog with an amazing history: "Belgian Shepherds" actually come in four varieties. The Tervueren, as seen here. The Malinois, which has featured on this channel before and is short-coated. The Groenendael, which in the USA gets called the "Belgian Sheepdog", and is long coated and jet black. And finally, the rarest of the four, the Laekenois, which is a wiry-coated version of the breed. Tervueren and Groenendael were used as military dogs during both World War I and World War II - and we almost lost them as breeds because they were so good at their job, they were actively targeted by enemy forces and shot dead when seen! The breed numbers were thankfully salvaged by cross-breeding Tervuerens and Groenendaels, which does NOT actually create a mutt! This is because the only difference between a Tervueren and a Groenendael is the colour of their coat, controlled by a specific gene. If you breed a Terv and a Groen together, puppies will either be a Terv, or a Groen. No weird half-breed. The same isn't true for Malinois or for Laekenois, whose coats change from their breed standard if cross-bred with a Terv. Did you know that before the breed became threatened by both of the world wars, interbreeding between them wasn't allowed? Malinois stand out amongst the four varieties as the most energetic - and actually THEY are primarily used in active combat positions in police and military. They naturally have a higher working drive than any of the other three breeds, which has lead to their affectionate nickname "the Malligator" - also heard on this channel before. Tervueren and Groenendael do still get used by police and military, but are more frequently seen in search and rescue and other similar roles thanks to their incredible scent tracking. While still highly intelligent and incredibly capable as working dogs, both the Terv and the Groen are considered to have more of an "off" switch than their Malinois counterpart. (Though remember, every individual dog is different!) They aren't a "Belgium Shepherd". This is a mistake some people make, but please, don't call them that. It makes we Belgian owners cringe inside, haha. Each of the four varieties of this breed get their name from different regions where their coat type was most likely to be the common one you'd see or where the coat type originated from. If you're considering getting one of the varieties, please make sure to do your research and contact responsible breeders. The Belgian Shepherd has many clubs throughout the world that you can look into in order to obtain information about the breed and about potential breeders. While they are by far one of my favourite breeds of dogs and can make wonderful pets, they are not suited for everybody. I also make this impassioned plea to you, if you're considering getting one, because right now, Belgian Rescues all over the world are being inundated with more dogs than they can handle! Malinois especially have fallen victim to "popular fad" syndrome as they have become more visible in media lately, and people don't understand how much work these dogs can take! You will get out from your Belgian only as much as you can put into them. They are a loving, highly intelligent and hard-working breed, but they need an owner who is prepared to spend the time and energy in socialising them properly, training them appropriately, and keeping them stimulated. And, finally... me and my family attend the Belgian Shepherd Tervueren stand at Discover Dogs every year for at least a couple of the days! If you ever come to the UK and to Birmingham to see the dogs at Crufts, do come to the Discover Dogs stands and head on over to the Pastoral section to say hi (if we're there.) Me and my lovely furry lads are always happy to see people and answer any questions you might have about the breed.

Turns out it's just the Mal's baddie cousin.😂

@@mysterylovescompany2657 The Belgian shepherd comes in 4 sizes, the most known is the Malinois (de Mechelaar), then you have the Tervueren, which is technically a long haired Malinois followed by the Groenendaeler. The Groenendaeler looks like a black Tervueren and they are just stunning. Last we have the Laekense which is a coarse-haired variant. They are named after places around the greater Brussels area (sorry Mechelen 😉) The temper of all 4 dogs is similar and only in the early 1900 did the different breeds got more individual breeding programs.

The Belgian Breeds … one basic structure, four coats, four breed personalities (although some traits they all share - like being incredibly “smart;” they like to learn and need a job) - Groenendael (black long coat), Laekenois (wire coat), Malinois (brown short coat), and the Tervuren (sable long coat). My Groenendael lived to be 18. She was a magnificent dog. She lived on the farm with my folks for awhile - she became my dad’s “service dog” as his Alzheimer’s advanced; she helped slow dad’s disease process for awhile. The Belgian Sheepdogs come in four varieties: the familiar Malinois, the Tervuren, the all-black Gronendael, and the wire-coated Lakenois. All the same brilliant dogs underneath. I was blessed to have a Tervuren GSD mix many years ago. A once-in-a-lifetime companion.
@GianniDN
@GianniDN 8 ай бұрын
They have similarities but are complete different dogs. My grandparents have a Tervuren and we have 2 Malinois. Tervuren are excellent family dogs and are just happy being with their family, they don’t have this high energy and they are amazing with young children. Even if my Malinois are perfectly trained and the most amazing dogs I wouldn’t let them alone with my little cousins, because of their high energy they can be clumsy around children or just nipping without having the intention of hurting them. A Tervuren doesn’t need long runs daily but my Mals need those, in the rain, snow, cold or even hot sun.

They're the same breed called Belgian shepherd but with a different coat type, I think there's 4 in total for that one. It's the same as a standard / long coat German shepherd or a dachshund which can have short, long or wire coat.

As people pointed out, both Terveurens and Malinois are Belgian Shepherds. In US, AKC considers these dogs to be of separate breed, however in the most of the rest of the world, these dogs are considered the same breed but of different type. Most non-USA breeders tend to have some or even all of the Belgian Shepherds types in their lines. The other two types are Laekenois (curly coat) and Groenendael (long black coat).

I used to have a Collie mix, who looked a lot like a Tervueren. Although his fur was longer and had a bit more redish colour in him. But he had exactly the same markings on his body, as the Tervueren in this clip. He was such a beautiful dog and was amazing with children. He lived until he was almost 14 years old and died from cancer. The best dog I've ever had! I think you would have loved him too, if you would have seen him.

When you train them well and give them enough exercise they are incredible dogs - went to a show with them once as they needed help and the dog did exactly what I wanted her to do and behaved really well.
