Can you say with confidence that you(or most dog owners) don't talk to your dog like it is your child/younger family member when they missbehave? I myself just naturally go into a different voice and pitch when talking to any of my animals(including my guinea pigs XD) and I think most people that care about their pets talk to them as if they understand us. :D

Vanessa’s comment about the crucial early months was very true for my childhood pup. He came to us at three months, a sturdy little black lab cross, and had a happy, much loved 18 years with us, but no one ever picked up a broom to sweep without Ben running away in panic. Someone had beaten him those first months and he never got over it.

Our family dog that we adopted as an adult was so afraid of brooms and vacuum cleaners that he would run away and we had to cross the street for brooms. We managed to desensitize him and by the end he would lie all relaxed until the vacuum would literally touch him or we had to tell him to go away. I guess it works for some and it doesn‘t for others.

Such patience you have! I brought my dog once to a groomer that refused him because he growled and reached for his collar too quickly. I took him to another groomer who said he was perfectly behaved and that’s where he goes now. You are the proof that a good groomer takes time for the dog to calm down a little, plus you try hard to make your doggy clients as comfortable as possible.
@whitmerule2753
@whitmerule2753 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely avoid that first groomer! Unfortunately there are some still who go by the (completely disproven) 'dominance' theory of dog handling, or who can't read a dog's anxious body language well, or - perhaps worse - who have just got tired of caring and will yell at dogs or hit them to force them into submission! I've heard plenty of horror stories from new clients of why they left former groomers, and not once have any of their dogs been unhandleable with a little patience and clear instruction and positive reinforcement. Most dogs will calm right down and be so happy to cooperate if you can just let them know clearly what you want them to do and that they're being A Good Dog!

We’ve had similar experience. Couple shops banned him because either they are afraid he’ll jump off grooming table and hang himself or they are afraid he’ll hurt them. I understand because he is very mouthy and his smile looks like a snarl. Instead we found a mobile groomer who treats Teddybear well, seems to like him, and has no problems at all. More expensive but for now we can afford it.

Actually not all dogs get over it. Some dogs don't, and shouldn't, be bathed regularly like a goldendoodle would, and don't appreciate it either. Like many breeds of working dogs with double coats. The shampooing strips their coat of the natural oils and texture that help the coat to do it's job. Dogs like the Great Pyrenees, like mine. I brush my dogs coat twice per week and can get it done in about 15 minutes or less if needed. She loves it. But water touching her.....not so much. It's hard to convince a dog who's DNA demands that actual bathing is weird and wrong, to allow you to destroy thousands of years of fine-tuning to NOT be shampooed. Plus, there's the problem of moving a 130 lb dog who doesn't want to be moved! Fortunately, these types of dogs don't require much more than brushing and nail clipping. Absolutely no shaving their coats unless for medical care, and washing only if really needed, at most, the very most, twice per year, and maybe never. Just brushing out their coats regularly keeps them surprisingly clean. Our ancestors bred these dogs with this characteristic in mind because it was necessary for the job. We have to respect a dog's breed and the fact that us humans often lay down perceptions and rules that we think should apply to all dogs. And that is simply not true.

1:30 Good point about being an entrepreneur. I hear people, who have never owned a business, saying stuff like "set your own work hours", "be your own boss", etc. But every actual business owner knows that there is no such thing as a real day off and business hours are 24/7 and are defined entirely by your customers and your ability to pay staff. It is more likely that you will be struck by lightening, twice, on the same day, and live to tell about it, than it is that you will experience even one day of feeling secure, rested, and in total control, when you are an entrepreneur. All true. Kind of like raising kids. I appreciate all you do for the pets that land in your salon. Where business, talent, and compassion meet!

He's such a sweet dog, just scared and has a mental trauma he needs help working past. The way he and the owner greeted each other shows that he is in a wonderful, loving home now. Vanessa, I'm sure that was a very stressful day, but you persevered and did an awesome job!

It's great that there are people who are willing to take on troubled dogs and go out of their (7 hours) way to get them help. I think that finding his triggers and realizing that he will tolerate the scissors, was so helpful for his future groom's. ❤

I can't believe people are traveling 100's of miles to take their dog to one particular groomer! There are good, patient groomers in every city. Vanessa is absolutely great, but she isn't the only groomer in Canada and the US who can handle a difficult or scared dog. The owners aren't going to be able to travel so far every time their dog needs a trim, so I don't know how this is that beneficial. I think it has more to do with getting their dog on camera and groomed by a famous groomer than anything, which I get. It would be an experience they will never forget! But as for really helping the dog long-term, it isn't a solution. They still have to find a groomer in their area who can handle a scared dog. They need to ask around in their local area, ask the vet, etc., for recommendations. I guess the argument is that somehow Vanessa can "teach" other groomers how to handle that particular dog, but there are plenty of groomers with decades of experience who don't need to be taught how to groom a challenging dog.

I think the owners made the best choice they felt they could. If there were groomers near them that has KZbin videos, they could have more choices. To my understanding, groomers don't allow for owners to be allowed to be around at a grooming. Would you let your kid be taken from you during a doctor appointment? I would hope not. So how do you judge a groomers attitude and whether they will take the necessary time to work with a difficult dog? I have watched a lot of groomers on KZbin and Vanessa is by far the most patient and soothing. She would be a best choice for a first groom. Someone screwed up this dog. Vanessa had the patience to figure out the problems. Now the owners have hope of finding a nearby groomer. They can even show the video of Vanessa. If the new groomer is too proud to take advice, they are not a good choice.

@susycavaleiro1265 Let’s be careful not to idealize color, that’s how many poorly bred doodles come into the world. They’re sold on color, as are most doodles and backyard bred dogs. Beware of things like so-called “rare” or “exotic” or “unique” colors, most often they’re just incorrect to the breed bc the genetics are crap and they’re mixed with random other dogs.

god i am so thankful he ended up in the right hands! the new owners seem super open to do what ever it takes to help the little guy be more comfortable! yes the groom was a little stressful but now they got a great assessment for what to do next! edit: his behavior kinda reads to me that he is just a little sensitive! like im not trying to anrthopomorphize him at all, its just, he seems to have very little tolerance for getting his skin pulled even when its just brushing. like its super scary to him! also same with the loud noise and all! Im sure if the new owners regularely brush him when his coat is still short like this, he could eventually get used to the sensation of the brush!
