That implies he's beyond fixable, etc. I believe he can still be easily trained, with the right hoomans, and with positive reinforcement training, a lot of compassion and commitment & encouragement & endless love, he can be an amazing well behaved & well balanced, beautiful dog. ❤❤❤

I took in an unadoptional Rottweiler and he had been abused by a man. As a woman it gave me an "in" I think. I had to scratch him with a stick, which he kept breaking, but eventually he realized I was being nice and giving him scratchies. After working with him for a few months I got him to be non reactive and was able to take him back to be adopted. He became such a sweet and loving dog once he realized he only needed to fear 1 human, not all humans.

Yep, knew he was a good dog when he was putting his mouth on her without actually biting. This is a salvageable dog. Any harm this dog does is purely unintentional; he just doesn't know what to do, or that what he is doing may or may not harm someone. I would also suggest placing this dog with an owner that has one of more dogs of equal size that are already very well trained; that would help a lot. If I was to take this dog in I would constantly take him out for training, walks, feeding, and playing/socialization. All other time would be spent in a cage until complete trust was established. The way I see it, this dog was abused in one of the two worst ways possible. I call this level of neglect "criminal neglect". Only when the previous owners inflicted a potentially mortal wound did they finally reach out for help. And if it were not for that wound this dog would have been is much worse shape, as it would have been living under those conditions for a longer period of time. Not going be nice about it, the humans responsible for this; I don't need them, I don't want them. I say this world would be better off without them.

Poor Max! He really doesn't seem at all like he's _trying_ to be aggressive, (thankfully!) just incredibly excited and energetic, alongside completely undisciplined. With patience, and _rigorous_ training, he has so much potential though. I hope he gets what he needs!

Totally agree and with others he prob just had nervous energy to work off esp being in a shelter kennel. I only live 3 hrs from shelter and would love to adopt Max but not fair to him. I’m mid 50s w/heath issues and husb’s healthy but busy consulting. We could give lots of love and afford vet care but not the time or energy he needs to thrive.

The main problem of high energy dogs is that they need to burn off. Let him run next to a bike for 3 miles and let him play with other dogs. It's simply impossible to slow them down when they have no chance to burn off their energy during the day. You can certainly calm him down when the base energy level is reduced regularly. Main problem is that most inexperienced dog owners go for the look and don't think about the original use of the dog. This is ultimately a retriever dog so this dog would need this high energy level.

As someone who worked in rescue and in a doggy daycare I can tell you all he needs is structure and a patient owner. He is a loving dog who just doesn't have the structure his breed needs. God Bless You Max and your future owners, into a loving permanent home

I don't think most people appreciate just how high energy standard poodles and bigger doodles can be. I did know beforehand how energetic my poodle was going to be, and I was still shocked. Yes, they're great family dogs, and they're excellent for people who haven't had dogs before, but they really, really need their physical and mental exercise or they'll go spare

That’s true. My son has two cockapoos (siblings) who are enormous because their mother is a standard poodle. When they were young they were extremely boisterous. They’re ten now and have slowed down a lot but are still energetic. They’re wonderful dogs with beautiful personalities but they have been hard work.

Everytime I walk my dog and I meet some kind of poodle mix they’re absolutely bat shit wild with energy. Definitely not a breed I recommend to sedentary people or people who have zero experience disciplining a dog.

Max was happy. This poor dog probably never had a haircut in his life. Too many people buy poodles because they are “hypo allergenic”. It is true that they don’t shed; the trade off is, you have to get them groomed at least every two months. Otherwise their hair will mat, they will stink and more importantly, the grooming will be somewhat uncomfortable for the dog. Too many people buy these dogs but cannot afford to actually own them. They are not cheap. We probably spend $120 USD on every trip to the groomer.

I used to have my own grooming shop and like an idiot, advertised that I accepted “problem” dogs. I did a lot of very large( newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, mastiffs) breeds and dogs that did not have positive experiences at previous groomers. To Maxes credit, for a pup with a high energy level and a lot of time in a kennel /stressful situation- he did pretty good. He tried to do what you asked him even though it’s hard for an untrained dog to understand . Kudos to you for being patient with him .Also it’s very hard, emotionally, dealing with perfectly good animals that people have messed up with their own ignorance and lack of energy a dog requires. Hats off! Job well done, much respect!

@@lagopusvulpuz1571 in my experience, about 45 years of it, most animals, regardless of their size, are more humane acting than most people. Larger dogs also tend to be more mellow. Not sure if it has something to do with lower metabolic rates or what. Size is not a good determination of harm. My worst dog bite( out of 100’s of dogs) was from a 15 lb dog. Was also sent to the emergency room from a single cat bite for treatment of “cat scratch fever”, a real thing. A very real reason NOT to declaw cats. But I’ll take a dog bite, regardless of size, over a tick bite anyday.

Dog's don't only wag their tail when they're happy or playful. It's just an expression of excitement. That can also be angry/aggressive or fearful or nervous (more likely in this case) excitement. Never assume that when a dog wags its tail, it's happy and just wants to play.

I constantly have to „re-educate“ people on the meaning of tail-wagging because my bernese is „people-crazy“ and will really overdo it when people lean into that nervous energy and talk to her when she‘s already worked up… touching is even worse 😅 nevertheless, the excitement and playfulness may bothe be true an come from the same place, as fawning (sometimes also called flirting) is a stress response like fight/flight/freeze… or in the dogs brain: I can‘t flee, freezing doesn‘t make it stop and I‘m not allowed to fight, so maybe if I ask to play things will be over soon? 🤔 I saw my dog doing this the other day when we had to walk past a wheelchair-user she didn‘t know in the dark - thankfully he didn‘t take it as an insult that my dog was kinda spooked by him 🙈

This kiddo definitely needed more experienced owners from the start. You’re absolutely correct in that the training has to be initiated when they are young. I’ve raised my two shih tzu since they were 10 weeks old and they were desensitized to being touched and handled. My groomer said she had never groomed puppies that were so calm and cooperative. And my vet said they were a dream to care for, and he even ended up getting two for his wife as babies so they could use some of my techniques. That was one of the best compliments I’ve ever received!

My rescue is a springer spaniel/border collie. As a pup she was purchased for 850 for a Christmas present. She ended up discarded outside from 6 months to 17 months tied to a post outside given away free in the end as "viscious, untrainable, with intense behavioural issues". The rescue we got her from said she was high energy, pulled on lead, boisterous but lovable all things considered. We trained her in the basics, and she absolutely flourished. Shes 12 now and has never shown aggression, though shes not left alone with others (you never know). She only hates the postman but just wants all the love from everyone else. She loves her walks and to run free, her recall is perfect. She still acts like a pup, but is loyal and so loving. We really dont deserve dogs. they're pure love.

A responsibly bred poodle is less maintenance then a poodle mix. Most pure bred poodles have a gorgeous coarse curly coat that doesn't matt easily and dries quickly. The curls simply curl together and are easily brushed out... poodle are less expensive to buy and generally are better tempered than doodles. Everyone considering a doodle should just get a poodle to be honest. Poodles don't shed.... making them more hypoallergenic than doodles. Whoever thought mixing a poodle with a breed who isn't hypoallergenic to make them more hypoallergenic is nuts in my opinion. But they did it because labs and Goldens tend to have a more chill demeanor if bred right. And trained properly. While poodles can be more high energy. In my experience most standard poodles are very sweet though... once you get past the hyper puppy phase

​@Carly Kirk it's funny actually, the man who created the golden doodle came out many years after stating he immensely regretted making them because it wasn't supposed to become a thing, he did it for a family member or something to that extent. And unfortunately people aren't breeding them properly or responsibly, so their tempers are just.....brutal their coats are horrible most of the time. I believe he ended up getting a Portuguese water dog instead

As the owner of 6 standard poodles, I can say this much if you don't train a poodle and work with them continuously, they will be hellions. 2 of our poodles are rescues, and it's taken so much time and patience to have them understanding rules and to grasp manners. They are intelligent dogs, they get bored very easily! They have to have mental stimulation and physical exercise. They are not lazy dogs. They are working dogs and thrive with work and activity. I am hoping Max goes to a home that is able to fulfill those needs.

Labs, shepherds, huskies, but I'm a homebody and a bit of a couch potato and I'm absolutely not cut out to own a big dog and it isn't fair to put a dog into that environment where those needs are being neglected, even if my intentions are good. I just recently adopted a jack russel terrier mix and she is the perfect dog for me. JUST enough cuddles for me and plenty of laps around the yard with my four year old. I didn't think I would want a small dog but it was so worth it to just take the extra time to do even a tiny bit of research both on exercise needs, grooming needs, potential health issues specific or common to said breed. I actually adopted her from my local humane society and it's been such a good experience for our family

Your youtube channel made me interested in adopting a dog. Up until a few months ago when I came across your channel, I never considered being a mom to a dog. But you drew me in with the cat wash video, I stayed for the dog videos, and then I started wanting a dog. Obviously, like you've said in a lot of videos, I researched the breeds, what they entail in terms of care, how much they cost, how much pet insurance costs, the best food to buy (and how much it costs, what ingredients to avoid, what methods of preparation to avoid, etc). After 2 months and a large spreadsheet with over 30 tabs worth of compiled information, I decided a chihuahua mix would be the best fit. I have back problems, so the dog couldn't be over 10 lbs. I spent 1 month looking online at the dogs available at local rescues and shelter, and on March 2nd, I adopted a 4 year old chihuahua-jack russell terrier mix named Flynn. He is a joy, and gives so much love! Sure, he has some issues, and my best guess is that a tall man abused him (he pancakes whenever he sees a tall man on our walks) but those are issues that I can help him deal with, with training and love. Today I'm taking him to the basic level training class offered by a local trainer (6 week courses are actually very affordable). So thank you for introducing me to dogs and dog ownership, and the importance of adopting from shelters. Also, for anyone who lives in Southern California, shelters here are killing dogs at higher than pre-2020 rates and rescues are full with dogs, but there are not sufficient people who want to adopt them or want to foster or foster to adopt. The worst dog shelters in terms of number of euthanized dogs are in Riverside County. So if you are interested in adopting, and you've done your due dilligence, please consider adopting. The number #2 breed that is euthanized are chihuahuas and no they are not bad dogs like they are often portrayed in the media. Plus, most are mixed dogs. Also, I've seen a lot of french bulldogs in local rescues and shelters. Please consider adopting! I literally wish I could adopt more dogs but I live in an apartment.

U did good , researching, it's risky adopting adults, if dont know background, how were raised. Of course we know #1 in shelters, are pitbull types, At one time back in 80s..?l) shelters in Cali were calling them " Pibbles" & adopting them out , not knowing their background, & to ppl not knowing how to care for, w. discipline. Were many attacks on owners & others,. that's when pits got bad rap In Fla here are also #1 in shelters, & very few get adopted out. Failure to spay/ neuter , is reason for overpopulation,&& cats as well

I see a dog that wants to play and interact with the person who's paying attention to him. Interact POSITIVELY, but he doesn't understand what positive interaction is. He doesn't seem to have a clue about words like "no" or "sit," which suggests no human has ever really spent much time with him SHOWING him how to interact positively, outside of playing with him. So he's trying to play, but she doesn't want to play, playing is the opposite of what she wants,, but he doesn't understand that and keeps trying to play, even as she's doing things he doesn't really love. So. He wants that positive interaction, but has no clue at all what to DO to get that interaction. What I DONT see is an aggressive dog. He was trying to put his teeth on her, but it's important to remember that dogs don't have hands. No fingers, no sensitive fingertips, so their mouth is one of their major manipulation tools. Dogs playing with try to put their mouths ("bite") each other with no intention of causing harm, just play fighting, like many young creatures do. So this is the most positive way he knows to interact with someone who is relatively a stranger. Does that make sense?

No one speaks a language you undnerstand, they all dress strangely and you can only catch hints of what you think they might mean through tone of voice (but even that's deceptive. Someone takes pity on you and brings you somewhere to eat and rest, but you've got no idea what local table manners are. You're very grateful for the warm meal, but you have no idea how to thank you OR please. You try to help with the dishes, but they push you out of the kitchen repeatedly. YOu're at the start of a very long journey to learn to communicate both with words and to understand the culture of what's rude and what's polite. How are you supposed to know that touching your face is considered to be a rude gesture and serving a cup with the handle towards them is a romantic gesture? You wanna be a good boy, but you don't know how.

So you held his right paw up in the air, while he furiously tried to free that right paw from your grasp, his left paw was firmly planted to the table for leverage against you. This allowed you to trim his left paw because he wasn't noticing that was what you were working on. BRILLIANT!

Yeah. He reminds me of my family’s dog, a coonhound which came to us at the age of 2 in a half-feral state. Jumping, mouthing, punching, the likes, she all did it. She didn’t mean any harm at all, but with a body meant to chase down and tree raccoons, she could really do some damage. Cause we got to her so late, she still will sometimes regress to this untrained state when she gets too excited, and needs at bare minimum a good one mile walk a day to be calm and well-behaved. Makes play time slightly nerve-racking, as if you rile her up too much, she will try (through stupidity and excitement, rather than true malevolent content) to take a finger off. 😂

I'm brazilian, a lot of dogs around here are not trained at all, so i was a bit like "isn't he being just normal?", But for a dog with that much hair, he would have to behave at least in the grooming. Most brazilian dogs who got no training are the ones with no race and here most of those are short hair dogs. They are like rescues without a pedigree, i don't know the right terminology for them in english, can someone tell me?

Max seems like a typical goofy and energetic doodle with a big personality! He looks so handsome after his grooming! Yeah the breeder is definitely greedy, and not ethical. No ethical breeder would breed this dog. His temperament is all over the place. You could say "well that's because the owners neglected him", but temperament has just as much to do with breeding as with training. So when you have a dog this out of control, you can't say which it is, so you shouldn't risk passing it on..

He's locked in a cage most of the time,to small to run, with barely if any stimulation , now finally something is happening so he's excited as hell 🙂 He certainly isn't vicious at all, rarely any dogs truly are, even those that were trained to be, even those mistreated. Truly untrainable, dangerous dogs are one in 100 thousand,and that's in shelter, I met one and the cause was...a brain tumors. Mental illness also exists in dogs, senior dogs with dementia can get more agressive but it's fear agression, they are confused, sometimes loosing sight, so they bite up to 2.5 on the 5 point scale (a dog truly intending harm is rarely under 3 even with swift intervention). This guy was doing ones or basically mouthing from excitement and lack of manners.

Our local animal shelter always has big dogs. Untrained, and owners give them up. Not the dog's fault. I volunteered one summer to walk dogs, I usually have good luck getting dogs to respond to a leash, but they almost pulled me off my feet. I gave up. I've even leash trained cats. Cuddled cats waiting to be adopted.

I have a rescue Doodle that is now 4 years old. He was badly abused as a youngster and my daughter and I rescued him (at approximately 6 months old) after driving 4 hours to get him (after being called by the Breeder). When we picked him up, we realized that he was grossly underweight (approx 20 lbs, according to our vet) and had hot spots, plus he vomited every time he ate… as it turned out, he is also allergic to all food except chicken and pork. We have spent 3.5 years loving him, training him, cuddling him, (neutering him) and just plain helping him to understand he is a very important part of our family! It was a long trip, but the end result was a 1000% worth it! He will have a happy life forever 🥰🥰

He is just a big version of my black rescue cockapoo, she had no training and was surrendered multiple times before we got her due to her "unpredictable nature" and the rescue almost did not give us her and were going to put her down for being too aggro. Thankfully we got her, and proved to them in a home follow-up visit they did a month later she was just very misunderstood and full of love, she just needed someone to put in the time to train her. I hope Max finds an owner who can put in the time and understanding we did for Betty :(

Thank you for the understanding & patience involved to help your Betty. We ended up rescuing a bigger dog than I wanted because we understood herding breed energy. I was searching for a confident companion for our rescued Aussie mix. The only potential companion that could match and seemed to be compatible with her was an Aussiedoodle who was rescued from a backyard breeder situation. The two dogs were perfect for each other, but it took some work & lots of patience to calm & train the Aussiedoodle. She still loses her mind for short periods of time (ADHD w/ OC tendencies), but we all (2 aussies + me) run around and play a lot, until she can calm down. She is sweet and the rescue admitted they were glad I took her as most of the applicants had NO clue, what kind of crazy hi-energy was involved, in this doodle mix. Our groomer says she gives great kisses, while being groomed too!!

Just the grooming? Doodles like this normally can compete with Border Collies in obedience, so for him to be so undisciplined? They completely failed on the training level. I´m not very tolerant with this kind of people, they go in completely blind when getting a dog, and tbf as a vet I had my fair share of such dogs being also in terrible health conditions(to the point of dying or having to be euthanized) because the owners didn´t even bothered with vaccines and basic health care.

Structure and boundaries are so important for these high strung working dogs. They are looking for your guidance and need it to operate in a way that is not stressed and high strung. @@laum5371 People who produce designer mixes like doodles or pomskies or even very popular breeds like french bulldogs that are out of standard are greeders. They care about nothing but the money they can produce from a dog. A real reputable breeder will still consider themselves a novice even after 10 years of being in the breed because there is so much to learn about a breed and how to produce stable and healthy puppies. Reputable breeders will also do appropriate health testing on the dam and sire and prove them in certain avenues like conformation, sports, hunting and obedience events. Proving a dog is more than just "titles" it's proving that dog is capable of being in that environment doing that event. A reputable breeder will have you fill out a contract stating if you can no longer take care of the dog they will take it back or find another home immediately. The contract also comes with a health guarantee covering common health issues that we can test for; ei hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, or PRA (progressive retinal atrophy). The breeder may also help pay for unexpected vet bills or with health testing a dog they co-own. I own a standard poodle from a phenomenal breeder and I am on a co-own with her to use in her breeding program IF she passes health testing, if she doesn't she will continue being a beloved pet. If people do their research on a dog breed and breeder and only support reputable people we wouldn't have this stigma that ALL breeders are bad and that's why dogs end up in a shelter.

They actively train dogs for the first few parts of their life for their future families, are highly selective with the potential buyers they see, and do the breed a service buy only selecting the healthiest both in temperament and health to breed. It makes a world of difference and often times especially for first time owners it’s better to go to a breeder. Otherwise you can end up taking a dog who needs a bit of help and ruin them beyond belief only to return them.

yep, that is an untrailed doodle. I got my Daisy at 10 weeks and this was exactly her wiggly, twisty, mouthy dance during grooming sessions. She was also a jumper, used her arms like human arms to grab you or ward you off, and everything she didn't like involved mouth grabbing (not biting that goodness). Even simple brushing instigating hyper behavior and trimming her nails would qualify as an extreme sport. She's two years old now and most of these issues are resolved or manageable. Of course no amount of training is going to make her not a doodle but she is a solid family citizen and a pleasure to own.

I would SO love to adopt a pup like Max. I worked with a Staffordshire after rescuing him from an abusive home. He became an ambassador to so many people who'd had pre conceived ideas of pitties and staffies, and who then became lovers of the breed after meeting my Beau. A friend brought him to her school for a thesis presentation that turned many in the classroom into believers that staffies were loyal, dependable, and cuddly pups. Beau passed, which let me move to an over 55 community, and they won't let any dogs over 40lbs in the community. I HOPE Max gets a forever home where he can enjoy his best life

When we first got our dog Rory she had similar manners. She was 9 months old and a rescue brought to Alberta from Manitoba. Every training session started with a long run where I took her on a backroad and let her run alongside the truck until she had expended enough energy to think. Lots and lots of fetch in those early years. We didn’t have a fenced yard for the first year we had her, so she is known all over our small town from us walking her 3 times a day. She has come a long way. I’m sure Max can too with the right people to help him unlearn the bad habits he’s been allowed to develop.

If kids today could get outside n be allowed to jump around some in the house too! They sit on an iPad or at the tv They can’t learn a thing This is not the only reason but it’s a big part, as u found with Rory, ur pup.

@@YeshuaKingMessiah my dad is a firm believer in getting kids, pets, and livestock to learn only after they’ve worn off energy. He always says if you’re a bit tired, you’ll work smarter, not harder. Which boils down to having the patience to listen to another perspective and try it a different way, instead of the energy to be stubborn and defiant. Works great, but requires some finesse with toddlers and preschoolers to avoid the dreaded overtired 😬

He did amazingly well with the dryer! After how active he was during the wash I expected the drying to be the hardest part!

I think the hardest part was the shaving. Max was most likely traumatized by getting sliced from the last time he got groomed, and now he thinks that's gonna happen again.

I love how she gives praise to him for being such a good boy but when he isn't listening or cooperating she is still nice but firm with him. He obviously needs that and I think he can tell she is trying to help. He is so starved for affection and wants so bad to just play.

@@thatican He is very difficult to deal with. He is biting her and jumping on her. He is a big dog compared to her so of course she is going to be honest that he is difficult. She's only like 100 pounds and I would be upset if a dog was biting on me too.

My Doodle was really bad about "mouthing" as a puppy. When she's really excited she still has to be reminded now and then. We started getting her groomed (Just baths and nail trims to begin) as soon as we got her at 10 weeks. This happy guy is what they look like when no one has taught them anything.

Did Max ever get adopted? He seems like a sweet dog, dispite never having a professional grooming before, probably. He did a great job while at the drying station. I hope Max got/or gets to live with a super active family. I hate people who adopt animals they have no skill to carefore then have to give them up and then the poor thing gets labled difficult through no fault of their own.

Wow, Vanessa, you did an amazing job on this really hyperactive dog. You must have been exhausted and annoyed by the end, but he looks (and I know he smelled) infinitely better when you were done. It was so generous of you to groom him for free! Hopefully, after he’s neutered, he will be better behaved and will quickly find a nice family. You are terrific.

It’s a mistake to think that neutering fixes behavioral issues. Most of the time it doesn’t. He needs training as he clearly has had none and has likely been unexercised and has been in pain with mats and ear infections and being cut! Why get a non shedding breed that absolutely must be groomed if you aren’t going to teach them how to be handled? People are just horrible sometimes. Don’t get a dog if you are not going to work with him!!!

​@@judyives1832 it can certainly help. And keeps certain behaviors from developing if they haven't already. My dog was neutered late, so he has a marking behavior. Neutering early can keep that from happening.

It’s almost abusive the condition he was in from first owners. He obviously wants to please but is so confused what is happening yet he settled. Hopefully he’ll be adopted by loving, kind, patient, knowledgeable owners who can give him a new start in life!♥️

I was so worried at the start of this video. I worried that you wouldn't be able to groom him and he would need sedation. Then you just worked miracles. Thank you for these videos. They are so informative and soothing at the same time.

Why sedation if exercising him before the groom would bring the same if not better result than sedation? Sedation is for dogs who are stressed out by grooming, but Max was just hyper which is normal for a young, high-energy dog. Exercising him before the groom would be enough.

@@ES11777 My first comment, that I deleted and rewrote, did ask about the safety of sedation and when it's necessary but as the video went on I saw it totally wasn't needed so I deleted most my comments about it. I AM NOT ADVOCATING FOR IT. I was just saying I was worried it would be needed since the dog was trying to bite her and he was so much bigger I worried about one of them getting hurt. If you re-read my comment you can see my say I was WORRIED she would need it.
