There are some techniques out of the ordinary. I thought this part of Giselle is beyond aesthetic, those twists,turns,extensions mean so much to the story, as a prima ballerina,I think that she fully acknowledges the weights.

"taste" is subjective. There are PLENTY of world-famous ballet experts who would consider Zakharova to be one of the best ballet dancers and interpreter of Giselle today. I for one like many variant of ballet dancers each with their own unique talent. And I like Zakharova not just for her fine lines and extensions, but also her body language and expression, which is clearly better than many other dancers, who just concentrate on dancing and not "living the character" like she does

@zushixilaiyi As a technical master, we have seen enough that she effortlessly turned a H-difficulty to a gracefulness, she could just be as many other principals, slip through the routine nicely.The Wow fact is that with the serene adagio, she did an eye-opening interpretation of the ethereal lyric. Despite many dilemmas Giselle had to face, Wilis, save Albrecht physically and mentally, love, forgiven…Have we heartfelt the struggle, healing, outlook and liberation?

Yeah, 2:18, technically that was unprecedented, thanks for Bolle, she was upside down and extended her legs over 180 while in the rotation, then floated down and landed to a pointe. like a spiritual being which she was portraying.

1. She is over 5’8, if you are her partner, will never complain her too thin. 2. Why it is called extension? What is the extension that should be perfectly done? Did Petipa give a definition? 3. The “dead hands”, you may be right, but Giselle was not a human at the scene. 4. The “cold dancer”, apparently you missed first half of the play, again please read the story. 5. It is ignorant to compare any ballerinas in between generations. if you have to, compare Fonteyn with Ulanova or Plisetskaya.

there's nothing wrong with having wonderfully high extensions if you don't sacrifice musicality, but zakharova does try too hard to show off amazing gymnastic feats (since that's what she's known for) and it affects the gracefulness and musicality of her dance. sylvie guillem is able to do both, so there's no excuse.

The grand Adage is a little too slow for it to be smooth. So it seems calculated rather Spontaneous
@2h12uchangle
@2h12uchangle 7 жыл бұрын
I actually like this rendition better and applaud the director and dances unprecedented interpretation. Here are the reasons This adagio is the heart and soul of Giselle, with the ethereal lyric, it expresses so much inanimate characteristic which is beyond aesthetic. In the beginning, we felt her struggles whether obey Wilis, how to save Albrecht physically and mentally, her undiminished love and forgiveness so on. I felt the slow tempo implied that. Of course due to physicality of human being it is difficult to dance with it. But as she healed from the struggles and liberating her self to counter against Wille's force and save Albrecht, the tempo (sprites) picked up so is the dancing.

In the Act II of Giselle, it is never just about gracefulness and musicality (although Zakharova owned them with perfection), absolutely not about the PK in between two ballerinas. S.Z. has no gymnastic background, S.G. does, that is the fact, no disrespect and comparison.

Apparently this is not your choice,she may has played Giselle the most over the last 10 years. In act II, the aesthetic approach is save, pretty and easy to be accepted. But it won’t be adequate. The adage took 20 more seconds than usual, bcz it demands technical perfection, outstanding grace and lyricism. As the otherworldly being, Giselle did not lost her pure, kind, lovely nature, but no longer fragile, affective and sublimed her spirit to the higher realm. The play interpreted that.

Zakharova is indeed one of those dancers who are technically gifted yet she never convinces as one of those great Giselles. Too much extension , not much drama

@alecsia96
@alecsia96 7 жыл бұрын
By drama you mean exaggerated facial mimicking and inadequate overacting, a la Osipova? Sure, Zakharova is quite unable to do such things. She is a very expressive artist, but you need to take your eyes off her 'extension' to interprete what she actually displays. She expresses with her whole body, not with her face. She dances, she tells a story with movement, movement as we know it in classical ballet requires technique. But (Zakharova's words), the technique should never be anything less than perfect, so that the public won't see the hard work behind the dancing, but only the dancing itself. In act II Giselle is supposed to be a ghost, an otherworldly being with no physical body at all. Personally i think SZ nails the whole characterization to perfection here, since she dances it so gracefully, so effortlessly, it almost looks unreal. Her hyperextended legs just reinforce her ghostly nature, since well, she's supposed to be weightless. Her arms are divine as always. The lifts are just the meaning of effortlessness. Svetlana is Giselle. Acting is not the same as melodramatizing.

Lucky you, Laura. I never saw her live. Now i can only imagine what it's like. She is so full of emotion, so full of music. I think she is over all so extremely gifted physically, i.e. feet, extensions, technical mastery, that it distracts people from what she conveys through her movements. 'Look at her legs!'. Maybe living in societies that give so much value to the explicit - movies, music videos, soap operas - makes people too one-dimentional and not subtle in the way that would allow ballet to be admired as an art form, a way of conveying a meaning through movement as a whole, and not just through stravagant, umproper facial expressions.

I had the immense honor of seeing Zakharova perform Giselle live (with David Hallberg) and indeed you & alecsia96 are 100% correct - I was moved to an extent in which I'll never be able to explain. The greatest, most treasured evening of ballet and of my life. It's an honor in which I'll never take for granted.

High extensions, beautiful feet with pronounced arches, turn out and a solid gymnastic qualities, but her ronds de jambe et batterie (entrechat-quattre-passes) and many transitions DO NOT MAKE her a great Giselle.... I have seen better! Tx

+Abril Green No worry and thanks for the explanation. Here are the points that I like to make: 1. There are ballerinas came from gymnastic background, some of them quite famous and respected, but not Zakharova. 2. Gymnastic exercises used many ballet movements, not the other way around, to say a ballerina dances like gymnast is insult.

I find her much too thin and extensions are overdone. Her port de bras is too angular and she has "dead hands." Certainly not the footwork or presence of Fonteyn-I find her a very cold dancer.
