today mostly skill = mapknowledge + RS killing ... we had bots and respawn invincibility to prevent ppl from doing this. 90% don´t even know what true maplock means ... it´s just not the same anymore. On a screen were only 1 pixel is the headshot box it´s just amazing how good the reaction aiming skills were in the past.

Never understood why this game was much less popular than Quake 3 for tournament play. I guess it's because Quake already had more of a foothold within the industry before Quake 3's release.

+zRexx ut weapons are a lot more unbalaced (you just die with 1roket or 1combo or 1flack shot) and movements are slower, you cant strafe or be faster. there are also usless/spammer weapons such as the bio rifle
@zrexx4832
@zrexx4832 8 жыл бұрын
ERGOPROXY You can die with 1 rocket and 1 shotgun blast in Quake 3 as well, which are essentially the analogues of UT's rockets and flak. And I don't see any complaints with Quake, so in all honesty, that's kind of a double standard you got there. As for shock combos, there's nothing wrong with having a high damage reward for a skillful feat. It's a risk versus reward system. Having to properly time the combo to where the enemy is lined up to it, in addition to having the accuracy and reaction times to hit the constantly moving projectile in mid-air while under pressure from the actual target hitting you. You also the need the multi-tasking ability to focus on aiming at the shock core while analyzing your targets movements and dodging their shots in the meantime. Essentially, as opposed to hitting the enemy and being straight forward, you have the extra thing to focus on, which adds to the level of multi tasking required when this technique is used. Not to mention, you can't do it at close range because of the delay in between shots. All these additional factors balance out the high damage of the Shock Combo. As far as movement speed is concerned. If the weapons are designed differently to compensate for the slower movement speed, changing such factors as blast radius, projectile velocity, splash damage, and how hitscan weapons function, you can easily have a competitive game with a slower movement speed, because the weapons are tweaked accordingly to still be as challenging to use. It's all about how the weapons are designed around the movement. It's not like they took Quake's weapon balance but gave the game with a slower speed, they built the weapons differently to accommodate for the game's different pacing. Let's just make a general example for this. If the players movement speed is somewhat slowed down in a shooter, and the rockets are slowed down by the same amount, then both players still have the same ability to outmaneuver each other's rockets, thus the game would require the same amount of prediction. It's about how the movement speed contrasts with the projectile speed, how far the player can outmaneuver the rocket's area of effect. If you move slower but the rockets also move slower, then the rockets are still going to be as difficult to use as they would otherwise. So it's not all about movement speed, but how the weapons' traits are designed around that movement speed to maintain the same level of difficulty. This is just one generic example of how a game's movement speed can be compensated for with weapon design. Though generally speaking, I will admit UT2004 had more expansive movement mechanics with double jumping and wall jumping to complement the dodge maneuver. And in addition to useless spammer weapons, Grenades and Plasma in Quake 3. Now, those weapons aren't useless, they have specific situational usages, but are much less versatile than Rockets, Lightning, and Rail. it's the same type of deal with the Bio Rifle in UT. Grenades and Plasma are also very spammy in their specific niches, Plasma is for spamming tight corridors, Grenades are for spamming around corners. That's kinda the whole point of those two weapons, and the Bio Rifle is similar in that regard.

+zRexx I'm only interested in games with Advanced movement techniques (I.e source games, Quake, Ut) but to be fair Quake requires way more dexterity than UT. And unlike in UT, Quake 3 doesn't have a single instant kill weapon, Ut has 3.5 (Flak,Sniper, Launcher, Shock combo). Quake also requires better resource management and area denial because there's less pickups and the timer is way longer (Red Armor is 45 seconds Shield belt is 25 which is a huge difference in a 10 minute game). While I agree the tactics for weapons are better in UT because in there everything is situational and useful unlike Rail, Lg,Launcher taking over the whole game. If pre Love and war update tf2 had weapon pickups, Armor, and smaller/ less cluttered maps I'd say it would be more competitive than Quake and UT. But that's a different argument

Fun fact: back in the days I was a mid or high-mid class player in UT99, there was A LOT of better players than me. A few years after I stopped playing UT99 I started playing some DM matches in COD4 (don't ask, it was relaxing after a hard day at work)... after 3 months of playtime I was able to beat COD4 veterans with over 5 years experience (not professional players but still...). I was playing mainly on one server and each time I entered it one of the players rejoined as a spectator to see if I'm not cheating, they could not believe that a player out of nowhere is getting top 3 on their "high skilled" server each game. Since that experience nobody can convince me that games like COD or CS require more or even the same skill as UT or Quake. No. UT and Quake are WAAAAY more demanding :)

Geralt Nt As a typical Unreal (Tournament) player, you hate them. They destroy the casual atmosphere. Unreal and Unreal Tournament worked well without any vehicles. Why then UT 2004 needs them? They were not needed... They just added them to be more like other games. That's what Command and Conquer does - Destroy their unique features to be more like other games.

The "No Powerups" mutator is in use (which disables belt, amp, invis and keg), think it was (still is?) used in all 1v1 tourneys

What are you talking about? If he won he was the most skillful player.. the other player can always resort to using the same tactics. What makes you good at a game is understanding what gives you the advantage, nothing else.

So "pain" had times where he should have just held second fire of plasma rifle yet he kept switching it up like a bot.. plasma rifle is so strong in ut you cut enemies in range like butter. 4:55 for reference, it just seems odd to me
