For those who don't know about the story behind Bach's Brandenburg concertos. In 1721, Bach composed six “concertos for various instruments”. He dedicated them to a German nobleman and sent the manuscript as a gift, hoping to land a job as the court composer in Brandenburg. The nobleman never replied. Bach eventually took another job in Leipzig, where he lived for the rest of his life. The 6 concertos were lost for 130 years. They were never performed. The manuscript was eventually sold for about $20 and shelved in a library. The Brandenburg Concertos sat there until 1849, when they were discovered and published for the first time. Thank god.

Can't trust nobles, they are worthless. Bach was a genius and should not have wasted such a beautiful set of work on those inbred swine. But he was trying to get a job so I don't blame him in the least, just a thought with regard to it.

To think that this absolute masterpiece was almost lost because of a ignorant nobleman makes me sick. Trouble is, we probably lost so much over similar reasons.
@Caroline12613 жыл бұрын
@@alhfgsp I agree, some nobles didn't understand music, let alone the genius of Bach!

Had this been not a noble man the concertos and the position would not have ever been discussed or the music created. Consider this.

Claudio Abbado made his players happy. He always told them to listen to each other, and here is a splendid example. His musicians frequently look like a lively wind rippling through a wheat field.

There's something about the energy and the connection of this group of people, each one showing off their technical skills, with their half smiles and glances to each other, that conveys both the fun they're having and the awareness that the ensemble is greater than the sum of the parts, and you cannot not think of Abbado as the magician who set the stage for this to happen.

A fabulous performance! Bach would have been pleased. Bach's genius is our blessing. I especially enjoyed the 'chatter' between the two recorders in the third movement of the 4th Brandenburg. I wonder if Bach was trying to capture the sound one hears when many small children (he had many) are speaking excitedly at the same time. The utter joy of this movement is undeniable. Very different than the somber mood of the previous movement.
