Let the musically unintelligent accuse me of effusion. I shall battle them. This performance is world-class. Only those of us who know musicology can appreciate 1) how very difficult it is, to *compose* a melody as lyrical as that comprising the first movement, for valveless trumpet; and, 2) how beautifully Sommerhalder performs such melody -- plus authentic ornaments! The partnership brought tears to my eyes. The "Acid Test," however, is the finale. Sommerhalder rose to the occasion. The all-important passage containing the highest notes -- and symbolizing either transcendence (if well executed), or laughable failure (if ill played) -- was beautifully realized. Readings like this contribute to civilization: The best of *valve-trumpet* virtuosi, over the years, have not always performed so musically. The audience should be shouting, Bravo! -- not just clapping. Frankly, I never thought I would live long enough to hear the art of paying the natural trumpet see new life.

I have a question for Mr Sommerhalder or for anyone who has played this piece on a natural trumpet. Most concerti have three movements; this one has four. The extra movement (mvt 3, Grave, 4:30) is unique in my experience because the soloist never plays even one note. While Telemann may have done this to be different, did he do this to give the soloist a rest from the challenges in the other movements?

There's what's called nodal tone holes which the trumpeter uses to change his notes. It's not a "natural" baroque trumpet where the trumpet player would use his embouchure to achieve the notes needed.
@guyjclark5 жыл бұрын
No, the holes merely help adjust the pitch of certain notes to match the modern tempered scale. Without the holes the player has to try to force the instrument away from its own set of pitches. All notes are selected by the player's body (embrochure, oral cavity, throat, and lungs). If you like to hear certain notes sound "funky" and out of tune, then listen to someone with an unvented natural trumpet. I have both types, and audiences overwhelmingly prefer the vented horn.

Does that trumpet have holes or buttons? He keeps moving his fingers on his right hand.
@BuzzVenturion4 жыл бұрын
Precisely placed "vent holes" help the performer to adjust a few certain pitches (aka "partials") of the harmonic series (esp. 7, 11 & 13) to align more pleasingly in tune to the expected chord structure of the composition, which typically will be performed more or less close to "equal temperament". Most people listening to music of the Western tradition will have long been accustomed to hearing and feeling equal temperament as acceptable, normal and beautiful. However, on a vibrating air column, such as with a trumpet, these unadjusted partials will naturally "slot", or place themselves, "in the cracks" between the prevailing diatonic notes of the tempered musical scale. For example, on an instrument pitched in C (because of its specific length) an 11th partial F is annoyingly too sharp, but as an F# it is heard as sadly too flat. Some performers take tremendous pride in themselves for their long-practiced and hard-won ability to precisely micro-adjust these pitches solely through embouchure, tongue and breath control on instruments built without vent holes. It is indeed an amazing, uncanny technical skill, quite beautiful to hear and to behold. Even so, many commentators and armchair experts feel it is their sacred duty to decry the use of vented trumpets as a modern abomination, as a weak-willed, hypocritical if not outright fraudulent concession to convenience and intonation, an ahistorical chimera posing as authentic when nothing could be further from the truth, and relentlessly insisting upon the fine and oh-so-necessary distinction between vented baroque trumpets and vent-less natural trumpets, and all but calling for the vented trumpet player immediately to cease and desist, to prostrate in abject supplication before GAWD A'mighty, and to willingly accept all forms of abuse, scorn and humiliation, and to banish him/herself from ever holding with two hands even a facsimile of a trumpet ever again. In other words, "Go take up clarinet" or something. More often than not, for these partisan malcontents, the actual music being performed is scarcely acknowledged and apparently neither appreciated nor enjoyed for the inspiring beauty of sound that it is. The reason for their withering comments appears to be more about establishing, or flaunting, their erudition, superior judgment and highly refined taste (to whom one can only guess, but _it is_ narcissistic after all). It is also the arrogance of aberrant competitiveness, of ego, of prideful one-up-man-ship, a ludicrous tempest within a teapot. One would suppose that composers should only use inkpots and quill pens, all pianos be dismantled and replaced by clavichords and the like. I understand that insofar as electric lighting is a fairly new thing, we better quickly go back to candles and paraffin lamps.

penso che Telemann mentre lo scriveva era questo che pensava!
