I think the shying away from the comicbook outfits is made worse whenever they decide to double down and mock the costume. Its been a trope for ages now for a character to wear/try on a very cheap, put-together comic-accurate costume and then say something like "I look like an idiot" or "Never happening" in favour of the new, modern, muted, detailed and realistic costume. The marvel Netflix shows were infamous for this and it made the Defenders show look incredibly awkward with Daredevil being the only one in an actual costume while the rest just wore regular jackets. Theres nothing wrong with acknowledging the silly roots of the comics, but it feels more like its done out of insecurity. Like they want to avoid the comics like its a younger sibling.

The one thing I think the curved-ear Batman cowl would bring to live-action is an even more 'unnerving' presence to him - like, it would be absolutely ridiculous in any shots of extended dialogue, but in quick shots, rooftop scowling, etc? He would look even more like a psychopath in a gargoyle-freak costume (So then the solution would be to make a movie more like Gotham Central, where Batman appears rarely, but makes an impact each time)

It's been a long, strange road. In early superhero media, they tried (not always successfully, but fairly consistently) to recreate the costumes as faithfully as they could, more or less. But as time went by, those prior incarnations came to be viewed as corny (often deservedly so), and there was an obvious desire to push superhero movies in a more serious direction (reflecting a trend in superhero comics that gained considerable traction in the 1980s). Which is a positive impulse to follow, at least to some extent, but around the turn of the century, Hollywood REALLY got cold feet about the costumes. And they threw out the baby with the bath water. They thought that mature themes would clash with the bold, bright costumes...failing to grasp that the source material had been thriving on that very juxtaposition for decades. And I do think we're getting back to an acceptance within the film industry of the fact that, yes, fans do want to see their superheroes' iconic costumes translated to the screen in a way that's instantly recognizable. They're finally figuring out, after a knock on the head that made them forget for a few decades, that the wacky costumes are an integral part of what makes superheroes appealing. And that real maturity comes from the storytelling...not the wardrobe department.
@novelteetime81362 ай бұрын
For most of these comic costumes, the adaptation lacks the honesty to portray them as cool/fun. Sure, some of them are goofy as hell and might not translate well to real life, but making sure that the character is still intact should be very important. Luckily, Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, and etc, got really cool suits that translate very greatly to the big screen. It’s a shame that we can’t have that fun stuff like what Japan has with its Tokusatsu heroes because they know how to make their heroes look cool/awesome while still having that goofiness. Look at Kamen Rider and its bug eyed helmets and belts.

I agree. One of my biggest pet peeves that's actually more of a legit grievance of the entire genre is how allergic to just...making the costumes look like they should. Even when the MCU costumes are relatively comic accurate they are over-designed and all look like they come from the same tailor. Too many unneeded greebles on most MCU costumes. But then again....comic accurate Wolverine looked...terrible imo. But I don't doubt that's more of a design, lighting, and cinematography issue than it is an issue of the costume not being able to be translated to screen. If they got rid of the white lenses it would look better.

As a fan of Robin, i don't shy away from silly suits. One of my favorite things about comic books and Robin in particular is how varied the suits can be, take a look at Dick Grayson's classic suit compared to the new Damian Wayne grey suit. all the variation allows for each character( and iteration of robin specifically) to feel different. The bright colours or lack there of allow for the artist to represent the character through their clothes. I love Dicks original robin suit, it feels like something a child would make, bright colours and no trousers just screams "IM A LITTLE KID" but then his choice to keep it as he gets older also feels fitting, it shows to me that dick is confident and not scared to run into action with little trunks on, he trusts in his own skills to keep him safe. And not to mention Jason choosing not to change the suit, they way i have always seen it, is that Jason is willing to wear the suit because its THE robin suit and to become robin you wear THE suit. in their world the suit isn't weird, its normalized and even seen as cool. okay ill stop talking about robin now. The constant removing of what makes these hero's suits their suits is fundamentally a bad idea, and often makes these hero's look nothing like their comic book counterpart. Take me back to the Burt ward days when a man wasn't afraid to wear a suit that looked a little funny. One thing that made me bash my head when i watched titans(besides the bad writing and the whole show in general) was how bland most of the robin suits were, in good lighting i could handle it (mostly due to the red chests, which dicks was lacking in colour) but when removing the gold from dicks suit when they made Jason's, to the overdesigned Tim suit with the weird chest plate (although props for it being bright) i just couldn't handle it. The suits felt over tactical but without the bright colours to balance that out (and for Tim's i I've already said, overdesigned, bright but too much) i just cant find myself finding much joy in them, I've seen some cosplays of the suits with more cloth looking armoring and/or brighter reds and greens and my god they look phenomenal (even ones that are clearly cheaper mad than the show suits). In fairness at lest they are actual robin suits unlike that Gotham knights show(and the red hood designed looked good and the Nightwing one want horrible because 99% of the time you cant see the paneling) but it just leaves me wishing they had gone all out...i guess i didn't stop talking about robin, anyway yes we need more corny comic book suits in live action media.

There was something about the costumes, corny as they may be to some, that made sense to some of us. Throw some kevlar in there and in a way, it's no weirder that camo patterns on soldiers. It lets us know who to root for and why. In one of the DVD features for the first X-men movie, they explained that they wanted to do the bright spandex but most of the cast didn't have the physique to wear it and still look "heroic", so they went with black leather to make the team look more heroic and give them a sense of uniformity. It made sense at the time as CGI wasn't quite there to make up for their less than superheroic pudges, rolls and soft spots, but the technology certainly exists today to do it if the studios wanted to invest the time and money. That said, though, I don't mind when a classic costume gets adapted with a "tactical look", i.e. Captain America or Batman, especially if there's a good in story reason for it. Let's be honest, no soldier, warrior or vigilante is going into a combat zone dressed like they just got out of a pilates class, they're going in wearing body armor. To that end, if the costume designers of a production can marry the character's classic spandex look with something that looks like it can actually stop a barrage of bullets, I'll be happy. Drawing a complicated costume many times in many poses and by several different people while looking consistent and good is monumentally difficult, which is why comic book costumes are often made with simple shapes/lines, form fitting and untextured, _especially_ in the days before Photoshop and digital editing. For all it's faults and drawbacks compared to comic books, live action's big strength is that the costumes can physically exist and move with the actor, so extra details like armor plating, zippers, pockets, detailed stitchwork and so on can exist without worrying if an artist is going to draw it wrong.

(Up there with that time in the early 2000’s where the comic X-Men started wearing black ‘cause of the films.) It’s a shame, because while it’s certainly on the more ridiculous side of Marvel superhero costumes, it’s still iconic in its own right.

In regard to helmets and masks, they're likely used sparingly because most of Hollywood prefers to have the actor's face visible to the audience, which I think is stupid. Actors can display emotion in ways other than their face. Although the show has obviously dipped in quality, I still love that The Mandalorian rarely shows Pedro Pascal's face. They trust that he can convey the emotions his character is feeling, because that's what an actor does. However, I think Hollywood likes showing actor's faces not for emotion, but for marketing, which is a shame.
@fad23Ай бұрын
I was scanning to see if anyone had commented on faces, because as an actor they can be extremely important. And they're important in a way that was usually not necessary in comics, at least until thought bubbles went out of style. But with an actor's face, the audience can get an immediate emotional kick, and that can be vital.
@fad23Ай бұрын
On the point of marketing, that's certainly a factor. I think of the two Dredd movies and Stallone vs Urban. Some characters should never have their faces seen and should be present entirely through body language.

I desperately need to see the Neal Adams Batsuit in live action. The white eyes, the blue and gray batsuit, I need it. I'm hoping James Gunn delivers. I'm hoping the DCU goes full comic book and abandons the grounded and realistic approach. I love Christopher Nolan but he did more harm than good with his Batman Trilogy. Now every single Batman film needs to be grounded in reality and that gets boring. I'm tired of Batman fighting normal guys in business suits give me Clayface or Mr. Freeze. Those characters won't be done justice in a realistic setting. I'm hoping The Batman Part II goes for a more fantastical approach. I'm so tired of realistic superheroes it takes away the fun.
@Sandwichreviewsforthesoul2 ай бұрын
That would be incredible to see The Batman Part II feature slightly supernatural or super powered villains. They probably won't go for it, but that's the perfect movie to introduce a fully comic book Clayface, Mr. Freeze, or even Solomon Grundy.

MCU-Disney+ ruined Agatha Harkness, the Ancient One, and Zeus for exactly the same reasons you mention. Jack Kirby's Agatha Harkness worked in the comics for 50+ years (1970-2023), only to be completely thrown away by Wandavision makers.

In fairness the helmets are a deeper issue than just “looking dumb”. It’s an issue of emoting. The biggest way to show emotion is through facial expressions, and a mask of some kind obviously covers that up. TheRuasianBadger did a short about this.

My take is when it needs to look realistic or practical then they should go for that. Good example would be Captain America. He's A literal soldier who fought in the 2nd world War so giving him a rugged military suit makes sense. Superman on the other hand is literally invulnerable so even though his suit is spandex it doesn't need to be layered in Kevlar or anything like that. It can look Goofy. And judging by the set photos from James Gunn's movie it looks like he's going with the classic look which I'm super excited for 👍
@Sandwichreviewsforthesoul2 ай бұрын
Agreed. Adapting a comic book look is fine and all, but it does need to be practical.

I could never really got into comics because I thought the costumes looked dumb. Only ones I got into was Wolverine and Batman and even then I liked the stories where wolverine didn't wear his costume and Batman had more armored suits instead of tights.

I have a conspiracy theory that the reason superhero costumes were always made fun of was because somebody went to a party in a superhero costume and git called gay or something (in a time period where calling something "gay" was negative, so somewhere between the 90's and early 2010's). They then made it their life's goal to convince as many people as possible to change the image of superheroes so that they felt better about themselves. And yes I am implying this person must of been very rich and influential.

A good 'Bad Representation' is Daimon, Anna Hellstrom and the show Helstrom. It feels like they didn't even try. Ffs Patsy Walker is Daimon's wife and Jessica Jones did her justice with the one scene where she had on the yellow and black. Also the same scene where we see for a moment Jessica's Jewl costume
@Tekkaman1994Ай бұрын
I didn't like that the costume designers had the X-Men actors wear black leather body suits. They thought blue and yellow spandex would have looked weird. Maybe, but each character would looked more distinct. It' dumb this was done at all. For Batman vs. Superman Dawn Of Justice, Ben Affleck's Batman wore a comic accurate costume, with the main body suit being gray, and no breifs though. I liked that Zack Snyder, and the costume designer went with the comic look. So many other superheroes in other movie weren't given the same treatment, and that's lame.
@gingivitis9148Ай бұрын
One of things with costumes and why helmets look bulky is coz superheroes are drawn like they're painted on, spandex doesn't stick to the skin that much so it doesn't have the 'hyper muscular' look, even if the actors is ripped af. And with headgear in customing there's a lot of thought into making it comfortable and light, comics tend to have them drawn very close to the head, so annoying to adapt. That said there are a lot of talented body painters, I'd love a film with brightly painted on clothes. I wonder how easy it would be to cg the texture on??
@nugget36872 ай бұрын
Sometimes, very rarely, a movie or tv show will made adjustments to a comic accurate suit that makes the suit look even better. In aquaman and the lost kingdom, black manta has a true comic book accurate costume, due to him not being a power suit because he has the black trident, but i honestly think the more bulky power suit from the first movie looked way better. A mortal human building a suit of armor made from atlamtian tech in order to fight aquaman was such a fun idea and the end result was badass, and still felt comic accurate with that big ass helmet. The bulkyness actually served to make him feel intimidating despite the big dumn helmet And my all time favorite comic accurate costume, is easily deadpool, especially the brighter red in deadpool and wolverine. Its ripped straight out of the comics, with extra detail that works because it makes it feel more tactical which is fitting for a mercenary, the black notches on the chest being punch daggers is a very fun inclusion. I especially love how committed ryan is to staying in the mask as much as possible, even in deadpool and wolverine which had him mask less more then the previous movies still had him in his mask for every fight scene from beginning to end, even in the emotional climax, he still kept that mask on and let the emotions of the scene and Modano carry

"But please, if a character is dumb in the comics, lean into it". Honestly, if a character is dumb, but has potential NOT to be, utilize it, make him cool, reinvent and improve upon an old work if there is something to improve upon instead of just wasting the entire thing. Blade is a great example, and I'm glad the Snipes movies gave Blade a cooler powerset, origin and a fitting look, cause with vampires there's this inherent violence and the overall tone is better when its edgier, more 90s-2000s goth than whatever he started off with. There are million more characters like those, and it's a shame not everyone gets to be reinvented, salvaged, and instead is proceeded to be "accurately" portrayed but utterly killed as a result. Cause Hollywood turns them into full blown jokes, instead of cool ideas with questionable, subpar executions that they might have been in the comics. And the movies will make that image stick.

Since dark gray is actually more tactical than straight black, I actually like the Batman fit. The black body armor is a close second. Especially on Ben Bruiser Affleck. But, why would you put the minor on the team in red with yellow and green trim. BF does not stand for Batman’s Friend. My second favorite is Punisher without the white gloves and boots. It actually makes sense. The white skull on the black background draws a shooter’s aim to the most protected area of Punisher’s body armor.
@ethannot-apastafarian41232 ай бұрын
So I’m currently working on several story projects, and costumes aren’t just to look cool- design choices could be for a tactical purpose, sending a message, a character’s tastes or connection to something, what was affordable for the costume maker, etc. One character has all-black armor, red fangs/eyes, and a red belt that sometimes comes with a sash over one shoulder. All of this is tactical- the colors are for stealth and intimidation, the fangs built into the helmet can be used as a tool or weapon, and the belt/sash uses magnetic technology to hold whatever’s compatible (weapons, supplies, tools).

Nah. I don't like comic accurate costumes. I'm glad you do, but I think they're dumb. The only time I make an exception is when it's something silly like Peacemaker. Vigilantes and soldiers wear armor, not tights, and for good reason. I only like superheroes that make me feel like they're a real person with extraordinary abilities, and real people don't wear tights into battle, or undies over their pants. I make an exception for the capes because they look dope as hell. I do like it when their color scheme sticks close to the source material, but all heroes should wear armor, because that's just the sensible thing to do.
