This was his first mixtape he ever dropped, he wasn't famous at all before this. He says it was inspired by going out dowtown, couch surfing, going to parties, drinking, doing drugs and hooking up with random girls after dropping out of highschool. Also I guess he was the sort of a guy who always had drugs on him or knew the plug type of thing so he would get girls that way from what i remember hearing in stories.

the thing about this album is that it's actually about depression and drowning yourself in drugs to hide away your insecurities. it just sounds like a freak anthem because abel is using that subject matter to hide his true feelings deeper in the lyrics

in case u don’t know heres a little backstory that may have u appreciate his earlier work more: he calls himself the weeknd bc on a friday he left home w his friends and never came back. during this time he was fairly depressed and homeless and one of his friends would throw these raunchy parties at this house (literally referred to as the house of balloons btw - its a real place). eventually he started writing and singing and met toronto producers at a party and they began recording. house of balloons was released anonymously on the internet in 2009 for free and instantly gained traction to the point where his own songs were being played in the retail store he was working at. at this time nobody knew who the weeknd was or what he looked like. eventually drake caught wind of this purely thru word of mouth and he pulled him in and they began collaborating. this is when the weeknd gave him a few songs from drake’s take care album as well as wrote and recorded thursday and echoes of silence. dude went from depressed and homeless and not wanting anyone to know who he was to this big up and coming artist who clearly had next in literally 12 months.

His most unappreciated work is kiss Land his best work prior to becoming studio album releases is House of balloon with the other two mixtapes mixed into that into trilogy but his best album in my opinion is after hours Dawn FM is incredible album but after hours is an album that's produced more hits and is definitely through and through his sound the album that introduced him to the world beauty behind the madness that was at the time it's most successful album release the album that put them into the pop realm of the world Starboy the album that recaptured his sound my dear melancholy I've seen him in concert August the 11th of 2022 it was one of the most incredible concerts I've ever been to xo Intel we od

Bro why do you go into the album with the idea that its not gonna be very good? It felt like you were surprised and kind of had to argue with yourself throughout the video when you actually liked most of the songs haha. His early stuff is great, many even consider them his very best! Definitely a different vibe to his newer albums though for usre. A lot less polished, and instead a lot more vibe based and dark.
