They were a supergroup made up of Layne , Mike McCready from Pearl Jam Barrett Martin from The Screaming Trees, and Chicago area Bass player John Baker Saunders. McCready and Baker had met in H3roen rehab. Mike McCready got the band together to try to help Layne deal with his addiction. Both Layne and Saunders passed from their addiction

Jerry had a problem with cocaine and alcohol. He is 100 percent straight now as is all of Alice In Chains. I like their music, but it isn’t the same without Layne. Jerry wrote the song Black Gives Way To Blue about Layne and Elton John plays the piano on that goodbye song. It’s beautiful.

Dirt wasn't their first album it was the 2nd. Before Dirt there was another EP named Sap that is somewhat similar to Jar of Flies and the first album was Face Lift.

You said get help. He tried, went to rehab 13 times. He was still fighting off and on at this point but a couple of years later his ex fiance died from drug related heart complications. He went downhill after this and became a recluse, disappearing into his drug use and sorrow. During the writing of Dirt went from drugs are great to drugs are killing me. This EP reads as drugs are bad, don't start or you might not ever get out. Just my opinions. Check out Mad Season if you want more Layne.

Black Gives Way to Blue is the first album without Layne. Still sounds like them because Cantrel wrot all the songs anyway. Just doesnt have Laynes distinct voice anymore.
