Eh I know most comments here are about how wonderful this interview is but I think the way he spoke was more contrived than authentic. He said the right things but didn’t live what he spoke.

That doesn't mean he didn't try. He made the effort to be a good husband and father, and sometimes that means you end up failing. His letters to his wife Patti, which have been sold on ebay for years, show his efforts and intentions toward his wife and sons.

As a child growing in the fifties and 60s when Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin ruled the Hollywood scene with their style of Comedy; you could not help but love the artist, actor and comedian Mr. Jerry Lewis. He provided non-stop laughter and joy that until this day we'll never be matched by anyone. Thank-you Mr. Jerry Lewis for your contribution to the world that will shine throughout eternity. Me and my sister watched Martin & Lewis movies as kids in the 1990s which became cherished childhood memories. In the late 1990s, when I was aged 8-10, my parents wrote to Jerry requesting autographs for me and my sister. Sure enough, we got them, Jerry wrote our names in his handwriting, giving us best wishes, written on a picture of him dressed as a clown (probably from the movie "3 Ring Circus"). In 2000, when I was 12 and my sister was 11, we saw Lewis on stage and it was one of the best nights of my life. Jerry Lewis was a genius and lengend with a big heart for kids all over the world. So blessed to have had seen his work in my early life.

Mary Cage very true. I have barely an eighth grade education but did very well in my career and make good money now. College would hand held me back. I was running a small company at 14 and working corporate jobs at 16, trying to learn all I could within my career field (best way to do it - on the job). Many people would do better without the debt of an expensive, useless degree. Whether they go in to trades, vocations, or just a career that doesn't require a degree (such as IT, where I am).

Great statements but his kids as adults were extremely critical of Jerry as a cruel authoritarian father during interviews with them decades after this. The kids thought highly of their mother but the kids all agreed that their father had some deep-seated control issues and had a trouble showing physical affection and patience.
@givethechanceakid Жыл бұрын
A man who kisses his children on the lips every time he greets them, does not have trouble showing physical affection. Joseph ridiculously stated that his father didn't hug him or play with him in his National Enquirer story, yet there is video and photo evidence to the contrary of them in public and their private home movies/photos. There is video evidence of him kissing Joseph on the lips too. His other sons have certainly said that their dad always kissed them on the lips and hugged them. Now was he there for their emotional problems and issues? I don't think he knew how to handle adult children's problems. He couldn't handle his own problems. He had trouble with patience as you said, but that could have been caused by the stress of his work and health issues. I've heard examples of his patience with his children, as seen by other people, so I don't think he was always impatient with them. None of his sons said he was cruel to them as children. He was strict, as Anthony Lewis said, but never unfair or unduly angry at them. He had six sons, and I'm sure there was chaos between all of them.

I wonder if a more accurate expression of your intention might be, “When **I** go to church, **I** am there for God, not to be seen, etc... and it’s **my hope/strong desire** that my fellow believers sitting next to me are there for the same reason, that we are really of one mind, since scripture directs us to strive for that unity of likemindedness.”

I found that out in 1977, I was an athiest before! In 1979 I parked my truck in front of Jerry's house to service the pool. I had a bumper sticker on the back that read, "Heaven or Hell. The guard at the gate saw it, and said to me, "did you know that Jerry's wife is a christian", I replied, no I didn't know that. Had a nice conversation with the guard, and then I did my work. I never once saw Jerry, or his wife. I still have a pic, of that same truck, with that bumper sticker on it. I had some very unusual reactions to it while driving! First time seeing this interview. 1965 was when Jerry's son, Gary, with his group "Gary Lewis and the Playboys" had their first hit song, one of several to follow! Great interview.

How can you not love Jerry Lewis? One of the best men on the planet

How many husbands have you heard speak this highly of their wives, with such admiration, regard, affection and respect? On the other hand, how many have you heard use their wives as the butts of jokes? How many wives reading this have a husband who does that, and does it habitually and cavalierly as if you’re the one who needs to get a personality and sprout some class? I ask every woman reading this; which kind of husband would you rather have? That kind of a human cow or a beautiful man like this who is classy and gentlemanly towards you? Patty was a blessed woman. Beautiful man. Just beautiful. I love the way he listened when someone else talked.

Let's not pretend that only men resort to treating their wives as the butts of jokes. There are women out there who do the same thing to their husbands. Women also come in the "human cow" and "beautiful women who are classy and ladylike" variety. It's about time women realize that there are reprobate among their gender as well.
@lindashelley36355 жыл бұрын
HydeAndSeek I take your point about the way some husbands constantly mock their wives disparagingly, but don’t you think there is a third way? In many families I know, including my own, there is a lot of gentle teasing that goes on, but it is done with warmth and affection and goes both ways, with a lot of joking and laughter between the husbands and wives, and even the children. In fact, I would go so far as to say that having a good sense of humour is surely an important ingredient in any happy marriage, as it helps you get through the rough patches that all families sometimes go through.

+dapper dog You're acting like he left Patti with six kids all at home still. They were all grown men when he left, and no longer living at home. The only one living at home was 16. It's not like Jerry didn't support Patti and Joseph after the divorce. And why he didn't go to the Joseph's funeral is because they had a falling out over Joseph selling stories to the Enquirer in the late 80's about his father. He outed Jerry as an "abusive" father, when all of what he really said amounts to Jerry being a very strict disciplinarian and on occasion whipping his kids when they were misbehaving. Something that many parents do all the time. Jerry's other sons have said that he was a very strict disciplinarian but not unfair. I believe Joseph just sold his father out for drug money, which is very sad. Did Jerry make mistakes too? Yes. He should've gone to his funeral. In a recent interview, Jerry was feeling very emotional about Joseph, and I think he does feel sad about how their relationship ended up.

He was right on, no one has the right to judge how he spent his money he earned every penny, and whats with these journalists who always say that there are people who think someone is putting on a show when they buy an expensive house, or car, or whatever. whats better? to be mortgaged to the teeth and end up living in a way that is above one's ability to maintain, and lossing it? or to buy outright as one can afford, and to live within your means, whether you are rich, or middle class, or poor, be happy with what you have, Jesus never forbade someone to be rich, he just said that "The wealthy are to be generous in their giving". it depends on where your heart is, he said not to store up treasures on Earth where thieves can break in and steal or rust and moths can destroy, for where your heart is, there you treasure will be, so store up treasures in Heaven where thieves cannot break in and steal, and nothing can destroy it, When a wealthy person has their heart set on pleasing God and uses their wealth for the good of others, and places their faith in him, then they are not only rich in this life, but also rich in faith and the next life. So I can't stand these sanctimonious and also jealous people who begrudge someone have nice things, if they can afford it, why not? so anyone who is envious, be envious! they are the only ones with the problem.

Jerry Lewis as Michael Corleone in Godfather ll. Amazing how Lewis has the same look, voice, and mannerisms as the character Al Pacino would play years later.

Even though Jerry Lewis played roles as a goofy nitwit..This interview shows that he is a very intelligent and wise man..He loves his family and is protective of his privacy and owes no one any explanation as to how he lives his life. Jerry was one of the great comedy actors of all time..

I agree with Jerry Lewis that religion is always in your heart. And i truly respect all religions but i never change mine.
@Riffster689 жыл бұрын
+Rima Sileika In agreeance w/ Jerry on that as well. Religion doesn't need to be sold door-to-door like 'Kirby' vacuum cleaners, nor televised from some 'Great & Grand' stadium w/ thousands in the audience. Just have a one-on-one relationship that's genuine w/ your God.

Scott Awaywithit . my opinion. Praying is not when our children or any human being dying. It's part of living . ( if you believe in everlasting energy). Same like you breath. You pray. I pray. Mostly don't ask but thank. But if accident strikes. How hard it is why to blame God. Those are lucky ones who don't duy in missury and continues pain , starvation and hoplesness. If just would be possible prevent death.... Impossible. Some of us we have longer calendar ... Some of us shorter. And yes.,. Hard bleads to said good by kids, versus pariens. Love life. Teach kids to love every minute of it. And without believe my world have no sky. Sincerely, R.

Scott Awaywithit That’s very true. In a similar vein, there’s an old saying that dates from the First World War; ‘there are no atheists in a foxhole’

Dont twist this....I see a man who is being honest and shows stages of a man...men start off bossy and overbearing in relationship...then men growup and know and see thier spouse as there equal...gotta respect him for expressing how he feels on marriage..
